We had stayed there once before and were delighted with the place. This second stay was just as pleasant. The accommodations were fine, and the staff was so pleasant. On arrival we asked if the room had a refrigerator. (We hadn't asked when we made the reservation.) Unfortunately, the clerk told us, all the rooms with refrigerators were booked, but with a twinkle in her eye she said she'd see what she could do. We were in the room less than ten minutes when there was a knock at the door and a very nice young fellow brought in a mini refrigerator and set it up for us. The people were so friendly and the place is so nice, we'll look forward to staying there again.

There was nothing not to like.

It was great to experience the way the old Fred Harvey hotels must have been like many years ago. The updates to the architecture and overall cleanliness was exceptional. The price was comparable to the more common modern vendors, but offered a much better experience and no doubt memorable stay. The dining room and saloon are especially noteworthy for their appearance! We will be back!

The dining room and saloon are only open on weekends. However, the dining room is open for breakfast and it was very good.

I couldn’t be more happier with staying here. I was stranded near Des Moines and the tow truck driver recommended this hotel. I arrived at 8 pm and was greeted by staff and invited into their restaurant which was amazing. The food came out hot and fresh and breakfast was awesome! The staff was so friendly and accommodating. Thank you all again for a wonderful stay and oh I forgot to mention the hot water for the shower was instant and stayed constant. Super awesome!

One of the best hotel experiences I have had in the past 30 years. The staff, the owners, the food, the location, the value were all exceptional. This historic hotel just has an incredible vibe. Not your typical chain hotel, which was refreshing.

Sure, the rooms are small with little space to spread your luggage and the TV is little. However, that is part of the charm. If you need big closets, a set of dresser drawers and a 50" TV, I suggest going to a chain hotel.

The Hotel Eklund is a very charming historic hotel with an interesting past. The room we stayed in (#301, The Homestead Suite) was very spacious, neat, clean, well appointed with a retro vibe without being spartan/uncomfortable. The king size bed was comfortable and relaxing.

* The channel selection on the TV was limited. * The Wifi signal was weak (at least in the The Homestead Suite). * Street noise was a bit loud including the passing freight train horns

Plenty of history and character to this old hotel. Employees went out of their way to make us feel welcome. When duties permitted, Kristi (please accept apologies if spelling is incorrect) at reception shared some historic information, and the kitchen and dining room staff put on a decent breakfast the morning of July 4th holiday. Well done!

Entirely a personal preference, but as a modern convenience, I'd put a fridge in the guest room and ditch the TV.

We have stayed here many times. The history of the hotel is so interesting. We loved our room.

This hotel is true “old west “. The lobby and breakfast area needs music playing such as “ Willies Roadhouse” type music… Hank Williams, etc to get folks in the mood of the old west feel. Even soft jazz music would work. Lobby is too somber feeling. You need an upbeat person to check you in not a sourpuss who’s attitude was “ I don’t want to be here”. Most people who stay here are wanting to have a good time and visit and talk about the hotel…… get someone at front desk who is truly happy you chose their facilities to stay at.

The property is a small hotel and has a historical interest; it’s nice to look inside at the furniture the decor and various artefacts from early 1900s and later. The room was comfortable as well as the lounge. Breakfast, free for guests, is healthy and the staff was very courteous. Parking is at the side of the hotel.

The room could use an additional chair. The small town has no interest but the reason we chose the location is that it was midway between TX and Colorado. There is also a commercial freight train that makes noise driving through the city a few times a day.

Easy to find location. Loved the historical ambience . Room was clean and comfortable. Quiet at night. Parking adequate. Felt safe.Enjoyed having dinner there in the historical bar. Would recommend to others and would go back if in the area.

Breakfast was self serve. The person working was not particularly helpful and told us a bit rudely she was not a waitress. All other staff was courteous.

Clayton is a small town and there is not much there apart from this fabulous hotel. Old, authentic and beautiful with the friendliest staff one can imagine. The restaurant is really nice, too, with lots of locals coming in for a good dinner. Breakfast is so much better than what most chain hotels have to offer. Neaby attractions include Clayton Lake State Park and the Capulin volcano. The Eklund is the perfect stop, quite simply.
