I've stayed here before. If you want atmosphere and a bit of old-time charm, or even faded gradeur then this is the place for you! Each room has its own character, and the bar is well stocked, and the conversation is easy. If, however, you want a coffee in the evening (after the coffee shop has closed) or some hot water for tea, then you are out of luck! For travellers from cities, it is easy to forget that in a place like Alturas, EVERYTHING has shut down by 8 pm, so make sure you have an early dinner. This is a great staging post for adventures off into the wilds.
Would have been great to get a coffee in the evening.

This is a beautiful old hotel with original furniture and artwork in sitting rooms and in the library. Our room was actually two separate bedrooms with one bathroom. Lovely old mirrors and light fixtures added ambiance. It was very comfortable. Breakfast was at the coffee shop on the first level - a Starbucks. I remember choosing from the menu and it was good.
We didn’t know that the rooms are on the second floor and there is no elevator. We had a bit of gear and 2 road bicycles to haul up a red carpeted grand staircase.

The historic Nile’s Hotel was a great place to stay in Modoc County California. They offer a courtesy drip coffee and pastry every morning and there is a restaurant and a separate bar inside the building as well. The hot water seemed endless and the water pressure was perfect for our showers.
The only thing that I wouldn’t like is a tub bath, but since we didn’t have children it wasn’t an issue. The shower was just fine.

We have been to Hotel Niles a few times and have had a great experience. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The hotel is old but charming-- it captures the history of the hotel and town which is interesting. In the forgotten part of California, this boutique hotel is the best place to stay. It even has a Starbucks but in a quaint setting. We ate at Niles Roadhouse which served excellent food (steak sourced locally). Our favorite was the Saloon, a bar that has karaoke on Saturday nights, filled with friendly locals who are open and fun. (They have a polar bear hanging on the wall!)
The hotel is old and has some minor issues with infrastructure such as the electrical. They need more wall outlets for charging electronics.

I came after 48 years. I once taught at MODOC HIGH. CAME BACK RE:BUCKET LIST. Need to see what changes, not many. Lot of businesses closed. I went fishing , the places es where I took my daughter fishing changed. People were nice when I left are still nice. Enjoyed my return
More beautification for city delapatated buildings.

I loved the history of the building, and the way the employees take pride in their work; it really shows. The building is a jewel in the way it has been restored in its early 1900’s decor. But it’s no static museum piece, it’s a fully functional hotel, with a diner, storefront coffee shop, and period bar, complete with a couple of bullet holes in the ceiling. What’s not to like?
The few available electrical outlets in our room (2) were loose when plugging in our various USB charging blocks. Typical for a hotel/motel situation with a lot of people, nightly, plugging in their various devices. The contacts in these receptacles only have so many insertions before they loose tension. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have an electrician replace them in the near future.

I had dinner. the waitress worked her butt off. I didn't catch her name but she was working the 25th.she deserves a raise.
I didn't realize you didn't have a TV in the rooms. I'm a TV guy!!!!!! I went down to have dinner which was great and than went to the bar with the local yokels. I had a blast. very friendly crowd.

Historic hotel , restaurant and Saloon on site. Double room so lots of space.
Nothing really. Karaoke in saloon until 11.30pm and we could practically hear every word in our room. We were ok with this and didn’t say anything but can imagine it would be very unpleasant if you needed to get to sleep early. There was nothing to say this was happening so some warning might be nice so you could ask to change rooms before settling in.

The young man who welcomed us late the night we checked in was very helpful and friendly. I believe his name was Dakota. The staff we encountered in the morning was nice too.
The bathrooms were pretty small. I know it comes with the territory of an old hotel though. Nice, neat place in general.

This is a charming, historic property located right off the highway. The rooms were good size and comfortable, and the staff were incredibly friendly. The coffee shop and restaurant and bar on site are huge plus.
