Mr. Nakajima is an incredible host! When we first booked our visit, he sent messages with a lot of useful information. Once we arrived, he gave us a personal introduction to the mini village and our cottage. He was always available to assist us and gave us a lot of good advice on where to go for food around Yakushima. However, he gave us plenty of privacy, which was greatly appreciated (Japan can feel a bit too "hospitable" for a westerner at times). He can also speak English quite fluently, which is a huge bonus for Anglophone travelers. You can tell that Mr. Nakashima and his wife put so much care into their work — I found it incredibly inspiring! Despite it being a "2-star accommodation," the amenities were really nice. The bathroom was full of necessities and lovely Shiseido bathroom products. The cottage also included a hammock, a patio table, and chairs. Other thoughtful touches, such as massage pillow and shoe dryer, were perfect for visiting Yakushima. The cottages themselves are lovely and reminiscent of Main Street in Disneyland. I'm still shocked that they were designed and built by hand! The area almost felt like a little European village. It was adorable. You can park right in front of your cottage, which was very convenient. The village also had shared laundry, which is quite nifty for hiking, and vending machines in a little "general store." I really enjoyed my time at Cottage Morinokokage and would love to visit again!

The beds were a little firm for my taste, but that seems to be the norm in Japan :)

The "hotel room" was, in fact, a cottage. Plenty of space; we could have added a ping-pong table. A kitchen that allowed us to make a generous breakfast including eggs in the morning. A large bathroom. Close to the sea, which fact we used on the first day for our first adventure on Yakushima. Very, VERY friendly and helpful owner and staff.

I am nitpicking. I would give it ten stars, but it was occasionally a bit cold inside. The air conditioning also works as a heater and fixes the problem rather quickly. Still, I recommend warm socks during the colder months.

Fabulous place to stay. Incredibly friendly, helpful staff. Our little house was cute but spacious. It had every comfort, a kitchen area, space to spread out our gear and a comfortable seating area, as well as good bathroom etc It had microwave oven, toaster, kettle, lots of sockets and extension cables, and even a boot drying gadget! There was a free clothes washing and drying service which was wonderful for us as we arrived there soaked to the skin after a hike in the ancient cedar forest during a thunderstorm. Our ferry was cancelled because of the storm and Morinokokage gave us another night’s accommodation at literally a moment’s notice. The owner also rang several restaurants and secured us a booking for dinner. I couldn’t praise the highly enough. It ticked all the boxes dnd more besides. Very highly recommended!

Mr. Nakashima is a wonderful, knowledgable host who has created an amazing group of cottages with terrific services like free laundry and vending machines for snacks and refreshments. Our cottage was the chapel. So beautiful, roomy and perfectly set up. We used the kitchen, but there are also a couple of restaurants within walking distance.

Not a criticism, just an observation. The location is a bit out of the way for people like us who travelled by public bus, on foot and taxi. The location is easier to get to by car (which most guests did). That said, our tour guide picked us up at the cottage and drove us back after a great hike in the mountains. There is a decent sidewalk beside the road for walking and we used public transit get to the cottages on arrival and visit a waterfall on the other side of the island.

We spent six nights at the property. The host was friendly and welcoming, providing us with a brief tour when we arrived. Our cottage was a suite featuring two beds and a private bathroom. The property was clean and well-maintained. The shared laundry facilities, on-site vending machines, shoes drier were very convenient and useful.

The mattresses could use a bit more firmness, although this may vary based on individual preference. Additionally, a general tip for travelers is that public transportation options are limited to a few bus routes with infrequent schedules. Therefore, it is highly recommended to rent a car.

I can't say enough good things about our stay at Cottage Morinokokage! The owner built every small home to have a unique character, which was incredibly special. We were on our honeymoon and stayed in the chapel and WOW. I recommend staying here whether you recently got married or not! It was so spacious and beautiful, and had everything we could need -- including a shoe dryer for wet shoes, a robot vacuum cleaner, and a modest but very useful kitchen! Most fun were the unique decorations and the back patio with a view of the mountains. The bed was very comfortable as well. The location was well-situated between many tourist attractions, restaurants, and the airport (though regardless of where you stay, I recommend renting a car to properly enjoy seeing the island). The owner and other staff member we met were both incredibly kind and helpful! They arranged for us to have a delicious bento lunch for our hike, gave us wonderful advice on what to do on the island, and the owner even brought us a gift of chocolate cake for our honeymoon! I've never given a perfect review to anywhere I've stayed, but this place was absolutely incredible and I wouldn't change a thing. I would love to come back to Yakushima and stay here again.

Nothing. It was perfect.

Cottage Morinokokage is located in between the south port and airport and is a great location for the islands attractions. The self contained cottages are spacious and clean and the owner is super helpful and friendly. Our cottage has an electric stove, cooking utensils, great fridge, microwave etc. One of the best things about the complex is the washing and vending machine facilities. After hiking we were able to wash all our clothing and use the dryers which meant we were prepared the next day. Hikers this is a great place to stay! Supermarket is only a five minute drive away but would also recommend going North to the ACOOP supermarket which has a broader selection of goods if you are in the area. Also recommend hiring a car before you arrive as the rentals book out very quickly.

Nothing it was really great place to stay!

Our host Mr Nakashima was very kind and generous during our stay. He always replied to our messages via bookings.com very quickly, so it was easy to ask any questions and get help whenever we needed. When we had to change our travel dates and book a different room for the last day, he was very understanding and went the extra mile to assist us in transferring our luggage to the new room. Needless to say, the cottages themselves were adorable and lovely! Very clean and spacious, and the beds were comfortable. The best thing is the shoe dryer machine provided in the room. Because it rains so much in Yakushima, that device was invaluable in preparing our footwear for another day of adventure as they would be dry in no time! On the only one clear night we experienced, we were able to see some stars outside the room. The atmosphere is peaceful and you can hear birds chirping in the morning. It rained almost every day we visited, and yet we truly enjoyed our time in Yakushima thanks to the warm welcome from his family & colleagues, and appreciate all the help (especially advising us on the correct port to go for our departure ferry).

Highly recommend to rent a car in advance as we weren't able to get one on the island itself (fully booked everywhere). It would add miles of convenience even though the hotel is near a bus stop, it may not be very pleasant walking the short distance in the rain, with cars zipping past close by.

Everything was terrific. We had a cottage with a kitchen and twin beds. It was exceptionally comfortable and quiet. We slept great every night. Mr. Nakashima is super kind and gracious. We'd go back in a heartbeat. He recommended a fabulous restaurant two bus stops from the cottage. Do make reservations as they fill up p[retty quickly. Best fish you'll ever have and Yakushima beef sashimi!! The cottage was truly like a home away from home and felt totally private. It was a terrific added bonus to be able to do a couple loads of laundry.

That we didnt have a car. We managed with the bus but a car would have definitely been better. Unfortunately we didn't do our homework regarding ng drivers license requirements in Japan. An official international license is required in order to rent a car, if you have a US OR Swiss license you will not be able to rent a car, so please do confirm at the time of booking. We were only there for 4 days so although we didnt get to see everything we'd planned on nontheless, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay it just gives us another reason to go back!

One of the most interesting accomodations I have stayed in Japan so far. Nakashima-san has created a constellation of cottages and other buildings that is almost dream-like and make the guest feel like they are living in a parallel universe. Location is excellent, communication with Nakashima-san was a breeze and he got out of his way to help me with booking a car for the time I would be on the island (for which a million thanks, Nakashima-san). The cottage I stayed in itself was of an excellent size, had everything one would need for a night's stay (and more - there could have be nothing better than the massage pillow after hiking about 10 hours on the Jomonsugi trail on the day). I would happily stay there again and hope to have the opportunity to visit Yakushima yet another time in this life, because boy oh boy isn't this a special place on earth.

Nothing, everything was fantastic.
