Balibo Fort Hotel is a truly unique travel experience, the quality of stay was like nothing else we experienced in Timor Leste. The rooms themselves are modern, very clean and wonderfully decorated, whilst being surrounded by elements of the fort. The pool was an absolute highlight, with wonderful views of the local mountain ranges. The food was excellent, and there is a huge breakfast. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, it was so lovely to see so many young people getting experience in hospitality. The hotel is in very close proximity to the Australian Flag House/Museum, and there is a wonderfully kept museum onsite at the entrance gateway, with a broader focus on Timor Leste's history.
The Fort itself is a bit of a tourist attraction, so don't be surprised if tourists come and take photos while you're trying to relax by the pool. Staff ended up closing the gates so people couldn't get through, but it can be a little invasive. A section on the booking.com page detailing transportation options would be great. We tried contacting the hotel about arranging transportation, but once they told us they could arrange a driver they took forever to get back to us and when they did, the communication was very unclear. Bottom line for anyone who is wondering - the hotel can arrange a driver from Dili at a good price, but we would recommend confirming it many days before you intend to travel.

Given the poignant history of Balibo, the execution of the museum within the walls of the fort was outstanding. The facilities within the fort, while doubtless mortifying historical purists, were at least well designed and tasteful. The setting is likewise outstanding.
There was no separation of smokers and they took full advantage of a captive market; a black coffee and a burger shouldn't cost USD 4 and 22 respectively. This is Balibo in East Timor, not NYC, Tokyo or Sydney ...

This is an amazing location in the heart of Balibo. It's a remarkable effort they have made to restore this historical building and put it under the service of the community. I loved the little museum and the breathtaking view. We really liked the pool area where you can bask in the sun. Because the place is in the mountains, the temperature is nicer than close to the sea. The rooms are spacious and well-decorated, each with a kettle and AC. Prepare for a big breakfast with delicious pao, egg, bacon, tomato, mushrooms and a pancake! Loved it
The towels have rust stains, probably unavoidable due to the humidity, but it gives an unpleasant feeling.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The manager, Erin was particularly accommodating and lovely. Gorgeous location with spectacular sunsets (and sunrises). Great setting to dine and watch the sun go down in the evenings.

Old building that has been well renovated with rooms added in 2 new buildings. Stunning views out to the mountains on either side of the border and to the sea. People gather in front of the main building to watch the sunset. Lovely little infinity pool also with a great outlook to the mountains. Nice staff. Okay food.
The chairs at the pool are hard wooden slats without cushions so not restful. Wifi was in the process of being changed over to satellite so it was a bit wonky. Hopefully that is a temporary issue.

The staff were both lovely and helpful. The views are breathtaking, especially at sunrise and sunset. The pool is stunning. The food was good.
The room was very nice, but probably due for a bit of maintenance.

Fantastic location inside the Fort. Great design and the Museum is very informative.
Somewhat limited food choices probably due to low occupancy
