Where to start?! The quality, style and quirky touches in this gorgeous place instantly made us feel welcome, as did the wonderful Marie-Lin. She and her partner clearly put their heart and soul into restoring this building, creating a truly unique hotel, and seem to take as much joy in hosting as we did in staying here. So many thoughtful touches for the guests, and the warmest, friendly host you could wish to meet. We had the honour of sharing a meal with our hosts and the food was exceptional. It honestly could not have been any better.

Nothing not to like.

Absolutely amazing! We stayed in the three bedroom apartment and it was fantastic. It was large enough to comfortably accommodate six adults. There is one bathroom in the apartment and one more shared in the hallway. Parking in the neighborhood was easy. The breakfast was fantastic with homemade pastries and good coffee. The hostess, Marie-Line is exceptionally hospitable and charming. The bed linens were so comfortable and ample towels were provided. The seating areas are lovely for socializing or reading books. Every detail is designed for comfort and elegance.

Lovely and stylish place in front of the castle, very tastefully decorated… Room was large with a beautiful bathroom. Excellent breakfast with homemade jam and croissant The owners are extremely nice , friendly and helpful. These people are passionate about their job and know how to please their guests from A to Z. The lady gave me some valuable and useful information about sympathetic places to visit in the surroundings. I am very grateful for that.. I highly recommend this extraordinary guesthouse.

The fact of leaving

Marie is the best host and was so welcoming. Her bed and breakfast is full of charm and is very clean and comfortable. She made us a delicious breakfast. I would love to stay here again. We came to see the castle but the town is wonderful as well. Loved our stay!

We came in August so it was quite warm and of course no air conditioning. We slept with the window open but a fan would have been helpful to cool the room. Wouldn’t stop me from staying here again though because I loved this place so much!

We were very well looked after from the moment we arrived. The downstairs was cool and airy and our host showed us a lounge we could relax in - outdoor areas we might like to use. A complimentary coffee area in lounge and a fridge with drinks (and honesty box). Our room was the attic floor - the Jules Verne suite, beautifully decorated and again well equipped with windows that gave you a view on all sides - including onto the castle and across the town. There were two separate bedrooms (a double and a twin) that opened onto a large central area with seating. And a bathroom with a large shower area. Breakfast was excellent, beautifully prepared and enjoyed by everyone! Marie-Line was an excellent host and we would love to return one day!

We loved everything about it! The decoration of the rooms, the warmth of the hosts. The delicious meal with our hosts. We have never eaten so well! The breakfast is also copious and homemade. Best croissant I have ever had. You are right next to the castle with a stunning view. I can’t thank our hosts Marieline & Clement enough!!

We loved everything about our stay at this beautiful place. The host was so kind and welcoming - also happy to chat to us in our basic French! The decor was gorgeous with lots of lovely areas to relax. The Jules Verne suite was so pretty, spacious and comfortable. Delicious breakfast and super location - we just wish we could have stayed for longer.

Breakfast was delicious and a real French treat. The bed and breakfast was a lovingly restored and updated historical building that was warm and cozy. I had a view of the castle from my bedroom. The host was incredibly friendly and kind. I felt extremely safe here as a solo traveller.

Nothing really. The bathroom had a bit of an odd smell, but that might be just the standard in buildings this old.

This is such a stunning place to stay. It is so clean and the decor is lovely. The owner was so friendly and welcoming and went out of her way to make us a delicious picnic breakfast as we had to leave really early. The town of Pierrefonds is absolutely charming

Nothing negative to say

The host Marie Lin is lovely and the beautiful croissants and butter she made for breakfast. The place is a literal stone’s throw away from Pierrefonds castle. the building has been lovingly renovated and you get a good sense of history staying there, hence the name Il était une fois.

Nothing but the 3 bedroom apartment is right at the top with narrow stairs. I was travelling with my parents so a bit tricky for them.
