The location was fantastic, right at the edge of the jungle with a fantastic view. The chalet we stayed in was wonderful. The balcony was great to sit on and enjoy the forest views. We did a 3 day jungle trek with our brilliant guide, Eddie, assisted by the very patient and kind Rama and Jerry the cook. We are both quite mature (60+) and not the fitest people, but they were able to cope with our slow pace. We saw many orangutans, monkeys of various species, birds, lizards, and much more. We finished the trek by tubing down the river. It was an unforgettable experience. Thank you to Eddie and his team for a wonderful trip.

Nothing at all.

🫂❤️After years of traveling around the world, we can say with complete certainty that Back to Naturism, in Bukit Lawang, has been one of the best experiences of our lives. We spent five unforgettable days in the heart of one of the planet’s last remaining jungles, at a hotel that not only offers comfort, safety, and stunning natural beauty — but also stands for a greater purpose: to protect public jungles and vulnerable lands from being sold off for palm plantations and destructive exploitation. From the moment we arrived, we felt at home. The rooms are cozy, clean, and perfectly integrated into the natural surroundings. The food was a delightful surprise — exquisite dishes prepared with love by chef Ipin, a true masterchef in the jungle. Even during our trek through Gunung Leuser National Park, we were served five-star meals in the heart of the rainforest, surrounded by ancient trees and the magical sounds of nature. Our guide Eru led us on breathtaking treks where we safely and respectfully encountered orangutans in their natural habitat. The views, the jungle sounds, the wildlife, the exotic flowers, the river, and the fresh air helped us reconnect with what truly matters. The hotel staff was absolutely incredible. Yanta, the manager, made sure everything ran smoothly. Aca, the founder and soul of the project, is an inspiring man who has purchased 100 hectares of jungle outside the national park, in order to protect it from deforestation and the aggressive expansion of palm oil companies. Rama and the rest of the team were always smiling, kind, and ready to help with anything. This place is truly one of a kind. No pollution, no stress — just pure peace and a deep energy that you can only find in places like this. We recommend this hotel to anyone seeking an authentic, life-changing experience deeply connected to nature. It’s not just a trip — it’s a gift for the soul.

It was an amazing experience. The place is surrounded by astonishing nature, and not like in Bukit Lawang centre, where all the guest houses are located one by another, with limited privacy, here you can fully enjoy being really close to nature and having cosy, calm, private space. The rooms and public spaces are comfortably and aesthetically arranged. The owner and his team are extremely supportive and helpful, and can share plenty of inspiring stories and information about the treasures of the jungle :) and ecological behaviours which prevent harming the nature. Food is super tasty and available on the spot. I highly recommend also “jungle spa”, unforgettable experience! We have seen orangutan just few hundred meters for this place. And the river is by the property so you can take a swim any moment. You need to walk there a bit from Bukit Lawang centre but for me it was just another advantage of the place, the walk is easy (you can make it in sandals/flip-flops) and through the beautiful area.

All was great and I totally recommend the place

Located outside of Bukit Lawang, but it’s a short hike and very doable. Beautiful view’s from the terrace. Quiet en relaxing. It is a laid back place and the crew is super friendly and cool. We did a 2 night jungle trek with Edi, Galang and ‘jungle boy’ and was a highlight of our trip. They made sure the kids were safe and we also had a lot of fun with them. And the food on the trip was among the best we’ve head in Sumatra.

Not much really. Bear in mind that it is the jungle but the nights were relatively cool and to our surprise hardly any mosquitoes. We could easily sit outside in the evening. The rooms are basic but comfortable.

Such a committed and competent crew, at the guest house and especially on the trek. Special thanks to our fearless, fun-loving and knowledgeable guides, Edi and Galang--who led us and fed us so well. The meals and snacks were well timed and generously arrayed, given the challenge of their carrying it all with them. Our sweaty 1.5 day trek featured encounters with multiple orangutans and monkeys. The swim in the river at camp after the 10 KM hike was divine.

Beware that the guest house location is a 30-min hike on an uneven path above the river. I managed it in the dark with two wonderful guides. Use backpacks not suitcases. Facilities are rustic which I appreciated. Don't come here for a hot shower, consistent electricity, and sparkling clean spaces. You get much more than that when you're Back to Nature. Physically, the trekking is a great workout and magical -- but only IF you're in shape to climb and descend, it's not raining, and you have the right clothing and footwear. So come prepared physically and mentally and you will have an amazing time cared for by a superb team of professionals who love their work.

My stay in Back to Nature was extraordinary for different reasons. The location is very remote, a feeling of staying in the jungle, surrounded by hills with beautiful rainforest and the river is flowing wild in which you can take a refreshing bath - the scenery is awesome. It is also possible to spot different kind of monkeys. The food in the restaurant is very good. And another reason why I liked my stay so much is the very ambitious manager of Back to Nature Yanta. He makes all possible for the tourist and it is his intention to make our stay an unforgettable experience. You should definitely do the spa with local herbs. For me it was one of the best spa in my life - very beautiful and very relaxing. Spot on!! Thank you so much Yanta for all, it was great!!

We stayed at back to nature for 1 night and took a 3D 2N trek with Anuar and Rama. The hotel is very peaceful and such a great place to relax. They were very helpful in arranging our transfer from medan and our orangutan adventure. Anuar works with back to nature to provide the treks and really showed us the jungle. We were able to adapt the trek to our preferences and he really went to the extra mile to cater for our every need.

Fantastic stay, only thing I would mention is it is a 25 minute trek from the main town but you can pay for someone to bring your bags for you.

What a gem of a place and people! It is So special and the team of people are full of heart, soul and fun with smiles at the ready. You don’t need to go trekking and sleep under plastic to experience being in the jungle as you can be in amongst it at Back to Nature swimming in the river and watching for wildlife. We saw lots of Thomas’s Leaf Monkeys, silver monkeys and white handed Gibbons in the time we were there We came for 3 nights, but stayed for 5 and only reluctantly left. Noval and Yanta did everything they could and more to make our stay so memorable from cooking special meal requests, Carrying our bags on the 2km walk in from Bukit Luwang, getting medicine in the village, climbing for coconuts and paddling us out on the “jungle taxi” (tyre tubes lashed together to make a raft) and carrying our bags all the way up the 300 steps to On the Rocks. If you want a unique rustic escape away from it all and a lovely vibe with such sincere, good people and a beautiful environment this is your place! It was certainly ours and we didn’t miss anything from a more urban environment

The only preference would be for it to be smoke free but that is a big ask in Indonesia

Beautiful secluded place, surrounded by nature. It takes 30-45 minutes to hike there from the edge of town, walking next to the river. It's a really nice hike, but it can be challenging with luggage or in rainy days. Great view of the national park from the balcony, we got to see some gibbons, and plenty of monkeys. You can also hike in their private land, though there's no clear paths since they are likely not walked often. Yanta is a great host, and cooked us some tasty food. They also organised a jungle trek for us, and we had a lot of fun with Edi and Rama. .

The path from Bukit Lawang needs some care and maintenance, to make it more accessible.

Back to nature by name and experience! Staff were welcoming and friendly. The environmentally friendly aspect of this place was amazing and the scenery breathtaking. Loved every minute of our stay and the trek into the jungle to see the orangutans was out of this world. This place is definitely for the intrepid traveller and will totally fill your cup. Bring soap!

Knowing a little bit more about the 40 minute trek to the location would have been useful. I did it in a dress and sandals - not recommended!
