For those looking to step into a time machine into a "real" Japan onsen experience, the Hotel Kurobe is it. We had the most beautiful Japanese style rooms with the most fantastic views (from our room, the hotel lobby, and the outdoor onsen baths) of anywhere in our trip. The hotel is amazingly quiet. The staff was unfailingly cheerful and helpful. We had the set meals for dinner and breakfast and the variety and quantity of foods was very satisfying. The man who picked us up and dropped us off at the train station was so kind and helpful.

This was not an issue for us but may be for other travelers. The Hotel Kurobe is set a bit apart from town. A free shuttle will take you to the hotel and back to the train station. But once you are at the hotel, you are there for the hotel/onsen experience...not as a base for other exploration. Basically, the Hotel Kurobe IS the experience. It suited us perfectly but it might not be the experience everyone is looking for.

True Japanese style room, futons on tatami mats with traditional low table and floor seating for food. Also small conservatory attached, with another table and chairs, and french windows so you can walk out onto balcony to view the trains going into the Kurobe Gorge, the river, and the steeply wooded hillsides. Lovely women’s only indoor Onsen, as well as an outside one. Privacy provided by bamboo screening and umbrella roof. Shuttle bus to and from town/ railway station. Brought “bento” breakfast to our room.

My stay at the Hotel Kurobe was incredible from the moment I arrived to the moment I was taken to the railway station in the hotel shuttle. Every member of staff was welcoming, thoughtful and kind. The room was amazing and the view spectacular. The public baths in the hotel are awesome. The breakfast left me speechless. So thoughtful, and beautifully prepared. I am 56 years old and have never had such an amazing breakfast. Thankyou to all the staff! x

the staff were so lovely, attentive and accommodating. Views from the hotel room and lobby were spectacular- with staff waving to the passengers on the train with flags! we were provided a free shuttle service pick up and drop off from the station which was great and they were able to accommodate my vegan diet and provided a beautiful dinner and breakfast which was the most special so far in Japan

The staff were incredibly helpful and went out of their way to assist us. The shuttle bus service was great, both for driving us out to a dinner location, as well as dropping us off at the train station. The room was one of the best we've stayed at, yet, and the view was incredible.

Lovely room with a view of the electric train and great view of the river valley from the outdoor Onsen. Didn’t dine there so can’t comment but their Obento box was very tasty. Shuttle service into the township was very convenient. Lovely friendly staff too.

The location was excellent, offering breathtaking views. The staff were helpful and kind, although it's worth noting that there's an uphill walk from the station. The food in town was great as well, and the town itself is charming. The trolley ride offered in town is also cool.

I have nothing negative to say.

Free shuttle and friendly staff. Right near the gorge train, which is why we went there. Fabulous views of the river.

Our room did not have a shower, as we had to use the onsen, which I didn't mind for one night but might not like it for more than one night.

We loved the scenic river and mountain view right before us, which is really calming for the mind and soul. The indoor onsen was rather spacious too. Really appreciated the free upgrade to a premium room, thanks Hotel Kurobe!

All was good other than its location which is a 7-10min walk uphill. Guess that’s the price to pay for a more serene surrounding.

Too much to fit in 3 sentences; the location was mind blowing, the service was exceptional, the food and facilities were great. The stand out was the staff and their assistance, and the views!

More of a personal preference; we stayed in the 'japanese style' room with floor futons which were murder on my back, even with 2 stacked under me
