I was originally interested in this hotel because I read that the Onsen had a Museum full of Kishio Suga's work. I had been following this amazing Japanese artist for a number of years... so that fact was a deciding factor for me. But, the Onsen, the staff, the care that we felt they put into everything they did, the atmosphere of the place, the gardens also designed by Kishio Suga, the delightful guests we had the pleasure of meeting, our room and the food we were served - and let's not forget the tour of the museum! - made me love this place. Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya has history. Someone told us that the Onsen was 500 years old. Most of the Japanese guests we met there went to purely relax. The kind and capable staff take amazing care of all the guests: A Japanese friend in Tokyo told me I should celebrate the Winter Solstice while I was in Nasushiobara. She explained that on that one day, it had always been traditionally celebrated by putting YUZU fruit in Japanese baths and eating something made of pumpkin. I asked the hotel about all this. I really don't think it was part of their plan... but, they did it all: the YUZU in the baths and the specially prepared Pumpkin desserts. It was all to please us, their guests, and make sure our stay was perfect. I was so grateful and felt so pampered and happy. I enjoyed that fruit in the Japanese bath more than you can imagine. So, If you want to relax in a beautiful Onsen with history, go see great art at the. Suga museum, to have a beautiful experience,and be pampered in a very Japanese sort of way...you must come to Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya.

Not a thing at the hotel. The little town behind the Onsen was run down. That made me sad. But at the Onsen Daikokuya, the marvelous staff made sure everything worked perfectly

Traditional and super well maintained traditional Japanese house, rooms really big hard to find in Japan maintaining the traditional style. Clean, so pretty the garden next to the river with all the birds you can imagine and the food was delicious and really traditional too, reach in protein! The outside Onsen was incredibly beautiful too and the bus literally drops you off right in front of the hotel entrance. Lastly, the hosts were so welcoming and nice.

Our stay at Itamuro Onsen was truly exceptional. Words can hardly capture how special this place is. Surrounded by exquisite nature, beautifully curated furniture and ceramics, a sophisticated art library, and gardens designed by renowned artist Kishio Suga, it was a memorable experience. The onsens were perfect for the relaxation you need after spending some days in a busy city like Tokyo. A special thanks to Koki, who kindly showed us around Suga's museum and shared insights about the special project that is Itamuro. We're already looking forward to returning soon!

Our stay was perfect.

Very peaceful place. Feels like there was once a bit more in the area, but the natural scenery is stunning. The staff are very friendly and the onsen facilities are great and clean. The food is honestly amazing and alone made it worth the money, really authentic dishes using locally sourced ingredients.

The room felt a touch dated, but in a way added to the character of the whole experience.

very large comfortable rooms with excellent river views, delicious meals, beautiful location and garden....plus..full sakura bloom during our 3 night stay!

Beautiful location with an excellent balance of Japanese architecture and modern art. The staff was excellent and the rooms well appointed. We enjoyed a garden view and the fire pit in the evening. Excellent food which they catered to my food preferences.

It's a real gem. The ryokan is different from the traditional Japanese style ryokan. It's really unique with modern and simple facility combined with great variety of artworks. The gardens designed by Kishio Suga is beautiful and meditative. Food was very good too.

Nothing really. If you know the shuttle bus time, you can save much on the taxi fare from the train station to the hotel.

The dinner and breakfast was quite amazing. It was quite the culinary adventure indeed as their food was sourced locally. Their open air onsen and sauna facilities are excellent and so relaxing. For the outdoor onsen, you get an excellent night view of the stars at night and a garden view / mountain view in the morning.

Absolutely amazing. Would definitely recommend it to anyone!

Very nice property. Quiet and beautifully organized. The dinner was excellent and Onsen was also nice.

Only wish if there was western breakfast option..(just bread and butter would suffice 😊)
