Piece of heaven! Space, silence, solitude and stars - one of the most memorable places I have ever stayed. The cottage is rustic but comfortable, the lack of electricity made it all the more wonderful. Beautiful scenery, near a river where chairs in the shade invited you to spend a quiet afternoon. Lovely walks. Absolutely loved my stay here, the silence and the stars are just incredible.

If you are expecting city-luxury, this is not the spot for you. If you appreciate a cottage with "houding" (character) and love being close to nature, then you will not find a better place.

we did not stay at Middlefontein farm but in Kombro Kind a B&B in town, Joanita was very accomodating and welcoming. we arrived exhausted after driving a long stretch of dirt road and a flat tyre, so we were happy and relieved to get a room where we were supposed to fetch the keys for Middlefontein farm. Joanita is a "real" host, understands the lows and highs of her guests, and has empathy and solutions for whatever problem comes along.

the walls between the rooms are a bit thin, guess that's how the typical Sutherland houses are constructed it was a B&B without breakfast which we knew, but we got excellent where to get a really good breakfast

It was an unexpected treasure! The description and photos were not accurate with what we found (the manager/owner is now aware there are issues to resolve as the current advert DOES NOT accurately reflect what you’ll find. We can do rustic and off grid do not a problem but the advert did mention electric kettle, coffee maker and micro wave whereas there is no electricity at all. It didn’t stop us enjoying the character and tranquility. All that’s needed is a better description fircthe punter.

This is a increadeble place! You will never experience the same in other places. There is no electricity, but they have capable powerbank to charge a phone and even a laptop. There is a fridge, hot water, drinking water, gas and stove to cook. Also they have a fireplace, you can make a bbq there too. There is no wifi and there is a weak mobile internet connection. Also no neighbors for few hundred meters. You will not see them, you will not here them. Best place to find a contact with nature. I didn't meet wild animals.

Charming cottage. Rustic. Great walks too.. Juanita should really put a pamphlet in explaining the history of the farm, the terrain and the pear trees etc. And about the British watch posts, which are not forts, and did not have names like Meerkat Fort. Ridiculous. Get the SA Historical Socuety to write it.

Should inform visitors 1. Bring your own soap and shampoo. 2. Bring your own wood and firelighters.

Lovely and romantic rustic cabin away from the centre of town on the grounds of Middelfontein Farm. Everything you need for a comfortable stay is present. I was told to get some firewood but it warm enough without. There's no electricity but heaps of candles, an oil lamp and a powerbank would you need to charge a phone. The town is about 15 minutes drive and has all you need including a tire repair shop (which I needed after the beautiful drive from Calvinia). Nice hikes with lots of plants on the farm.

I had an incredibly peaceful stay here. The quiet, combined with just the right amount of natural light, made for perfect stargazing—it's as if the stars came out just to greet me. The cabin is beautifully secluded; I couldn’t see or hear anyone else around, which made it feel like I had the whole world to myself. The fireplace was a lifesaver at night when the temperature dropped—it added both warmth and charm to the experience.

The location is perfect. Just 1km outside the little town, Sutherland. We enjoyed the trials in the surrounding areas for a hike / run in the morning. The house had 3 separate bathrooms, which makes is very convenient for 6 adults. We enjoyed the inside braai area (due to the cold outside!) and also the panel heaters and electric blankets. The surroundings were tranquil and peaceful.

Oldest house on the farm and crammed full of character! The facilities are basic in keeping with the cabin's age but it just adds to the charm. If you are looking for an overnight stay to stargaze in Sutherland, then this place is perfect. No cooking facilities but highly recommend The Blue Moon in town. There prices are reasonable and the food is VERY good (Lamb curry was especially good!)

Loved how quaint and old the house is. It was almost like staying in a museum. Private and remote with access to a gorgeous stream.

I suppose it’s part of the experience but there is no power and we didn’t shower due to the strong sulphur smell of the water. But the place was extremely clean and otherwise wonderful. I would also suggest the host gets a carbon monoxide/ gas detector. A gas smell was quite strongly present and my wife would have been more at ease knowing it was safe with a detector.
