L'Antica Conceria is situated a 5 minute walk from the centre of the old city of Matera, and yet it is in a quiet location with panoramic views over the gorge. It is a historical building, that has been sympathetically and artistically restored. The rooms have access to lawns or patios overlooking the gorge. Our room was excellent, with part rock and part stone walls and stone vaulted ceilings. It had an immaculate en-suite bathroom, king-sized bed, TV, wardrobe, fridge and a minibar completed the picture. The room was even better than the photos suggested. It was spacious, architecturally interesting, and immaculately clean. There is secure covered 24 hour parking 50m away from the property. Getting from the parking to the rooms does require negotiating a short slope up and some stairs (down). The breakfast was fresh, varied and delicious. Much has been said about the host Martino in other reviews. He is the other reason to stay there. His love and enthusiasm for Matera are manifest. He will advise you on where to go and what to see in fine detail, and individually tailored for how much time you have to explore the city. Honestly, if you are visiting Matera, I would 100% recommend that you stay at L'Antica Conceria. You will not be disappointed.

This is a comfortable small hotel. The property is well maintained and even has some historic features and a lovely view for afternoon for quiet relaxation. The bonus is Martino, the property manager is the best! He went out of his way so many times to make our experience both convenient, and more interesting. He even picked us up at a bus station after dinner time and drove us across Matera to our accommodations, and staying to mark a map showing us where we could still get some dinner in an old part of Sassi and even made reservations for us. After a lovely breakfast, he walked us through specific destination recommendations and restaurants marking a map for us to follow, which were all terrific suggestions. Matera is an amazing experience, and Martino made it extra special for us. Thank you Martino!

The steps down from the road to the accommodations are not for sissies, but once you get there, it's worth it! The location is just a short distance out of the main historic area, but we found it safe to walk to town, and a good surprise to find a "tourist" walkway close by.

Beautiful place to stay both if you want to explore Matera or just passing by. Situated at the entrance of the city with paid parking across the road, so no need to enter any closed or narrow streets. Host was super friendly and helpful, explained everything about the room as well as gave lots of recommendations on the city tour with major places to see and where to eat. Breakfast was superb with local specialties like bread which was so delicious that we went to the same store to buy the same. Room itself was well decorated and clean, beds were comfortable. Area outside the room with spectacular view to the canyon so make sure you occupy a table outside for evening drink)

Beautiful property with breathtaking views. Happy to see someone spend so much time and energy to take an abandoned property and return it to better than its original glory while keeping its historic local charm to the area while updating to current safety standards. Everything part of the transaction from start to finish was professionally and meticulously handled by Martino the host. Martino is a true treasure to the area with his vast knowledge of Matera and Puglia region. Great location that can park car safely across the street in secured parking garage and walk to all the historical sights, or many of the excellent restaurants the area has to offer, and again Marino can provide recommendations based on your taste. Accommodations were comfortable with a delicious selection of local Breakfast items. Thank you Martino for such a wonderful stay and experience. Hands down best B&B host I have had the pleasure to know.

Everything from the brand new luxury room carved in an old cave/leather shop, the ammenities, the breathtaking view we had outside the room and only 3 min walking from the old town (Sessi). On top, the owner was great, more than a host, he was also our local guide, made restaurant reservations and also explained us details about the hotel history and Matera. Everything was great, good value for money, more than we expected. It was such a nice surprise and we really recommend the location. It's also very quiet area. Thanks Martino for the great hospitality and smile.

Nothing! We should have stayed more than 1 night. The hotel and Matera are very romantic and worth visiting. It's sad we had to go. We will be back!

We stayed 2 nights in the Red Room at L'Antica Conceria and were so happy with our choice. The Camera Rossa is very spacious, beautifully and tastefully furnished with a mix of traditionnal and modern equipments (loved, loved the lighting fixtures !). The bed is very confortable and the bathroom absolutely huge and amazing. Everything was pristine clean. the room leads to the garden where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the canyon and of the Belvedere from which you have a tremendous view of the Sassi (we recommend going at sunset). Breakfast was perfect with a choice of locally-sourced sweet and salty products, including the so good Matera Bread. There is a chance you won't need lunch after Martino made you taste everything :-) L'Antica Conceria is perfectly located, a 5-minute wallk from the Sassi area. We enjoyed being so close from the historic town, yet away from the hustle and bustle. Our host Martino was perfect in all ways. Communication was fluid and friendly from the beginning. He helped with parking, made dinner reservation for us (Osteria l'Arco was our favorite) and most importantly provided us with insider's tips and itineraries to visit the Sassi. We would have been lost without him ! We recommend Antica Conceria 200% !

Fabulous. From the warm welcome from Martino, to the excellent breakfast, it exceeded our expectations. The room was a superb blend of ancient and modern. The location - breathtaking. Great value for money, even taking into account the anemic Canadian dollar The nearby parking garage took a lot of worry out of the equation, even though parking a fairly large SUV is usually so effortlessly easy in hilltop Italian towns and seaside resorts at Easter

One of the most amazing places we ever stayed at. Truly exceptional in every regard, a place designed with love for detail. We liked everything from the comfort of the room, the excellent views, the good breakfast and the excellent location (close to the centre but quiet). Our host truly loves his job and makes sure that his guests get to know and love Matera. We would stay again in a heatbeat and can recommend l‘Antica Conceria to everyone looking for an unforgettable stay in Matera.

Loved that the property was set in an original “cave” & only a 10min walk to main square. Martino was very passionate about this beautiful city & extremely helpful providing us detailed information on what to see & do. We were lucky enough to be there during an important yearly event of the city. Our room was very clean & bigger than average with wonderful views of valleys below. Ensure to allow enough time to wonder the many hidden treasures of what this historical city has to offer.

Wish we could have stayed a third day

We had the most peaceful stay in this place. We were fascinated by the attention to detail in the charming rooms to keep the authenticity of the place. The history, beautifully and with passion explained by the host makes this place captivating. Very clean, all the necessities we needed are provided. The refreshing enthusiasm of the host sharing the story of l’Antica Conceria and of the city of Matera is what will stay with us the most, helping in every way to make the most of our short time in Matera.
