Great value for money, older style accomodation however was very clean and everything we needed. Room was spacious and about a 10min walk from the station. Staff were very friendly, they even privately drove us up to the snow monkey park which we were not expecting however very greatful for. Even bigger surprise was when checking out the gentleman at the desk also drove us to the station as he knew we were only just going to make the next train, got us there & called out the car window to train station staff to let us on, talk about going above and beyond! Burger shop on the ground floor also had really good burgers.

My huge river view room on the top floor was so spacious, squeeky clean and pleasant, I spent a lot of times sitting, reading, listening to the river trickle in the day time and roar at night. I'd keep the window open at night and it was such a pleasure and privilege to fall asleep to this wonderful sound. The futon bed was comfortable and there were more than ample supply of blankets. I found the traditional pillow very hard, but luckily I brought my own. Tea and a flask of cold/ hot water was supplied too. Staff was most helpful and the onsen facilities within the hotel was impressive with one indoor hot pool, one outdoors with the view to the misty mountains, constantly bubbling and spilling over with fresh mineral water. A sauna that operates 3-10pm was also available. But I was very lucky, I had the whole spa area to myself at all times. The daily breakfast on offer that I enjoyed at an added price was a smorgasbord of pickles, salad, slices of poached pork, mini shumei, rice, red bean soup, miso soup, sausage and bacon, cereal, drip coffee. The hotel also provides a free transport from and to the train station - take advantage of it! The hotel seemed quite close so I walked upon arrival which was a mistake, lugging luggage on uneven ground uphill! I arrived boiling hot, had not brought any light weight clothes and there were no shops that sold t shirts but the elderly lady kindly gave me a new t shirt to wear and keep! All in all, it was a very pleasant stay at the hotel run by an elderly and most helpful staff.

My only concern was that the spa areas were not cleaned on a daily basis as the stool I used which I moved from original position remained in the same place the next day.

No need to take a bath in the room since the onsen have all the amenities for it. The onsen is empty almost all day which is very nice to be on your own. No problem with having tattoos. The owners are amazing and explained everything in the room. Futtons are amazing and the room very clean. There is tea pot with hot water in the room. Fridge is full of stuff to buy. The owner took us to the monkey park and to the train station at the end free of charge. From the snow monkey you can take the bus down but easily you can do the road down by Shibu onsen easily for 40 min.

The hotel is old and the room initially smelled a bit old. At the check out the owner charge 150yen/night per person stating it was the onsen usage. I was not aware in the booking it was charging separately. Onsen is for sure above 50C because it real burned. I only got inside for 1/2 minutes and got red imediatos, it hurt. Later i was only able to dive inby adding a cold water from shower while inside.

I liked the onsen facilities, the outdoor onsen was so relaxing. The staff was incredible. They were so kind, they really cared about us, they tried very hard to speak English for us, they went out of their way to make sure that all our questions were answered and that we had everything we needed. I loved the location, it was so beautiful in that area and we really enjoyed our room overlooking the river. We left the windows open so we could get a breeze at night and listen to the water flowing down the river. The room was very comfortable for all of us! Also, we ordered food from the restaurant and it was really good!

The property was very old and needs to be updated. Everything looks very worn out and some things need repair. We also saw a cockroach on the lower level when we went down for breakfast.

Staff were friendly and facilities were clean. We loved the authentic rooms with tatami mats and the views from our room of the mountains were beautiful. It was a great location for the monkey park with a free shuttle bus provided and we enjoyed the walk back to the hotel afterwards. Charming little old fashioned streets nearby too though a lot of the shops and restaurants were closed as the ski season was over. At the end of our stay, we got a lift back to the train station too. The onsen was lovely especially the outside one and they allowed us to use it despite having tattoos.

Onsens were single sex with nowhere for us to go together as a couple but this didn't detract too much from the experience.

Located close to the station and surrounded by the mountains. They offered us a ride to the station. Very traditional Ryokan with clean bath facilities and excellent food. I wish we could have stayed more than one night! The monkey park is convenient to reach from here. They also have a restaurant with western style food if you booked without dinner. I would definitely recommend booking the dinner though, as it was a beautiful experience. Our room was traditional style and comfortable to sleep in and huge. Breakfast was also great. The outdoor onsen was amazing!

Hotel is slightly outdated, but that adds to the charm.

Having never tried an onsen before this was a great experience! The hotel room was spacious and we enjoyed having a little dining table and a setting on the inside balcony that overlooked the river. Photos of this place don't do it justice. It has such a nice feel. We were here two nights and went to see the Arctic monkeys and to the Snow fields. The restaurant at the hotel was booked out so be sure to book in advance as I hear their dinner is exceptional. We enjoyed a fantastic meal at the restaurant opposite the train station so if you miss out on the hotel dinner I recommend eating there. You won't be disappointed. Hotel also has a cafe and all the staff are lovely. Really enjoyed the room, private bathroom and hotel facilities. They also picked us up from train station, and took us to monkey park entry the next day. This is a quaint area to visit, relaxed and enjoyable. Happy to recommend this place. It's not upmarket but it is friendly, clean, spacious and comfortable plus the onsen is a must as part of the Japan experience!

The place is run by an old couple. Top notched services, very cozy and large space in the room. Room were cleaned every day with fresh towels. Clean and warm room. One thing to take note is that there is no private showers in the room. Only a toilet and a sink. You have to shower with strangers in the public shower beside the onsen, but that is how you get to fully experience the Japanese culture. There were two onsen, one indoor and one outdoor, and one sauna.

There were no instructions in the onsen / shower area, some foreigners didn’t know about proper onsen rules and regulations so it would be best to provide that in the public showers

I stayed at a japanese style room. The photos do not show how good the room was: it was really nice, with amazing views and a little balcony. I felt like being in a movie. The onsen is also super. They provide bufet style breakfast with lot of japanese food, I even tried natto. The staff is super friendly and helpful: everytime when I seemed to be lost somebody helped me without being asked, and it was never a problem that I don't know the local customs, somebody always told me how and what to do. I really enjoyed my stay there! The hotel has a minibus, and they give you a lift to/from the train station and the monkey park, which was also very lovely!

i was satisfied with everything.

We loved everything about the hotel — the charm, the food and especially the onsen. We were greeted with such warm hospitality, we were contemplating to extend our stay. Breakfast was delicious and the rooms were quaint, yet comfortable. One of ladies at the hotel were so kind to accommodate our one year old, she even gave her a small toy. We will definitely be back in Yudanaka if not for the hotel, the charm of the whole town and the beauty it holds. Tip — the hotel can be a bit far from restaurants so dinner may be a problem. The cafe downstairs does good burgers worth trying and there’s a quaint restaurant about 300m walk from the hotel which serves home cooked food. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Yudanaka and cannot wait to come again.
