The location is spectacular, at the end of a long glacially carved lake with mountains all around. If you have a car I highly recommend staying here, because there's so much close at hand. It's an easy drive to Geiranger and Dalsnibba, you can go up the Gamle Strynfjellet road, drive to the end of the road at Erdal nearby and hike to the summer grazing areas, or drive around the Loen Skylift, go to the end of Lovatnet, or head up to Bricksdalbreen. I've been in this part of Norway on three different trips, and it's one of my favorite places in the whole country. You can spend three or four nights here and have a packed schedule of things to do each day. The hotel itself is an old-style place with a new building bolted onto it. We stayed in one of the old rooms, which was comfortable and functional for sleeping, but not a place to hang out in. However there is plenty of common space on the ground floor with comfortable chairs for reading if it rains. There's lots of good Norwegian art hanging on the walls, too. The restaurant serves both breakfast and dinner, and the dinners were quite good for our tastes - they serve buffet style but because everyone eats at the same time, the food doesn't sit for hours and thus tastes fresh cooked - which it is.

I have no complaints at all.

Everything! The hosts and staff gave exceptional hospitality in this delightful family-run hotel. We stayed two nights in a very comfortable motel room overlooking the mountains and fjord. The buffet dinner is well worth booking - the food was delicious and plentiful and we enjoyed learning about the hotel from the hosts’ introduction. The facilities and location of the hotel are superb- you can borrow the hotel’s rowing boat and sunbathe/swim by their little beach area. They have a sauna too and you can hire kayaks. The best place we have stayed on our journey across Norway.

This hotel is more than just a hotel. The owners make you feel like part of the family they are there to help. They are fourth generation owners and they have got everything correct. A beautiful historic hotel in a tranquil l setting next to a lac. Absolutely perfection itself. Nothing was a problem. I am lactose intolerant and they prepared different meals for me. The breakfast had so much choice even vegan cheese which was really lovely, and while I'm praising this hotel, I would just like to say they have the best coffee in Norway that I've tasted. Congratulations for treating their guests as friends. When we come back to Norway we certainly will go out of our way to stay there again. The location overlooking the lake is Paradise, with the nicest owners.

We could not stay there longer.

Fantastic hotel; good breakfast; great views from our room and the hotel grounds. Beautiful place. Clean and comfortable. We opted for the fix price buffet dinner both nights: it included an excellent soup; two entrees (fish and meat); some salads, some starters, potatoes, cheese and fruit, bread, and two desserts. The food (except for one entree one night) was excellent and I was satisfied with the choices and the values. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Norway.

Nothing. This was one of the places we liked best on our three week trip.

Probably one of our best stays in Norway! Loved the look of the hotel on booking.com, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed!! Both my husband and I loved the place. Felt more like home, a beautiful and tastefully done home! The property grounds were also beautiful. The Owners have given a lot of thought and attention to every single need of the guest both in the room and the bathroom! Breakfast spread was very good and the bread was both fresh and yummy!! Would definitely recommend this place and would love to come back someday and stay longer.

Everything is top notch, family owned hotel with great breakfast, motel room was awesome, beautiful location with river and fjord and a lot to do on a day trips around. Also perfect scenery in the evening to enjoy sunsets over fjord. Free rowing boat to enjoy lake :). You can make sandwiches and fill-in bottle of coffee to got for a small fee during the breakfast - we used this offer and it was very nice and convenient.

Everything was awesome

We had an incredible stay at this accommodation! We opted for the economy class, and it exceeded our expectations. The rooms are located in a separate building from the main one, and each has its own private entrance, complete with a table and bench right outside. This setup allowed us to enjoy breathtaking views of the fjord from our doorstep—simply stunning. The property itself is lovely to explore, and we captured some amazing photos during our walks around the area. The breakfast offered was excellent, with a wide variety of options including eggs, bacon, fruits, croissants, ham, cheese, muesli, and more. It had everything we needed to start the day off right. For the price, this accommodation is a fantastic deal, offering great value for money. For motorcycle enthusiasts, the roads leading to the hotel and beyond are a dream—perfectly curving with stunning scenery at every turn. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning in the future!

The location of this hotel is beautiful and we wished that we had more time to stay here and explore. We stayed in one of the rooms in the motel part of the hotel (economy double) which were clean, comfortable and sorted, if a little snug around the bed itself. There is an evening buffet which you can book and the food is tasty and well presented. The real bonus of this hotel is not only the location (stunning), but the personal approach from Lorentz and Emma Hjelle who are continuing the family business of 125 years. Lots of general rooms to sit in and experience the comfort and history of the hotel. The dining room is light and airy with beautiful rooms.

We loved our entire experience at the Hjelle. The hotel reminds me of a beautiful old home or mansion. The breakfasts and dinners were delicious. The hosts/proprietors are such a warm, nice, helpful, engaging couple! Our room was spacious and clean, with a big bathroom and great water pressure. The setting of the hotel is fantastic. It's right on a beautiful lake, in a very picturesque, tiny town, resulting in us taking lots of pictures! And it's very driveable to the things you want to see in the area, e.g., Loen, etc.

Nothing, it was great.

The room was big enough to accommodate a couple, it was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was clean. Water pressure was good. The food was nice. Quite a nice open buffet type of dinner and breakfast. The hotel offers you a packed lunch for a certain price and you can fill your bottle for coffee (for a certain price). The staff was very friendly. Always smiling and willing to help you all the time. The hotel location is quite good as well. There are nice places you can visit by foot. The hotel staff gives you a booklet you should check after you settle in your room. There are suggestions of places where you should visit including the routes and nice places to visit.
