I enjoyed the quirkiness of this hotel. It is delightfully different. The position close to the railway stations, but within easy walking distance of the town centre is excellent. I enjoyed watching the steam engines preparing for their day’s work while I was eating breakfast and was amused by the model railway which served drinks in the restaurant. Food was of a consistently high standard. I liked the do it yourself egg-boiler which enabled you to get your breakfast eggs precisely how you liked them. Also, it was so pleasant not to be forced to listen to unwanted piped music at meal times. After dinner, the outside terrace, still with railway entertainment , was a pleasant place to enjoy a final drink. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Leaving!

This hotel is one of the best stays in Weingerode this is the second time we have stayed there as we base it around the trip on the Hartz Steam Railway to Brocken it is in an excellent position to view all the train movements during the day The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful even though we did not manage to speak much German they did spoke very good English and were very very helpful the food was first class and freshly cooked the hotel was spotless ie shower etc the rooms were absolutely spotless we are planning a return trip

The location of this hotel in very convenient for travelling on the HSB Railway system, and for walking to the Old Town. I was able to secure a quiet room which was comfortable, included a fridge and wasperfectly adequate for my needs. The breakfast and dinners served at the hotel were extremely good and the service was friendly and quick.
The room was looking a little dated.

The Altora was perfect for us in every way. We loved the quaint look of the place and enjoyed the novelty of drinks being served to tables via a model steam train and the food was hearty and tasty. It has that rare mix of cosy traditional style, but with all modern facilities in our room. When we needed help sorting out our daily plans, all the staff were both friendly and efficient . We came from England by train, so the location was perfect for walking into the wonderful town and it's walking distance for rail and bus travel - a free bus pass was provided for all journeys in the Harz region- highly recommended!
Nothing- all fine for us!

- 6 minutes walk to both the Wernigerode Central station and to the steam train up to the Brocken - Old town, castle, etc are all at walking distance - Nice staff at the reception - Good breakfast options -Tickets for local buses and trams running along the Harz region are free during the stay (you gotta stay overnight for this)
- No soundproofing in the room : Could hear loud TV, alarms ringing, people talking, coughing and snoring the entire time from other rooms although I had a private room all to myself - No electric kettle in the room to heat some warm water for oneself

Close to the train station, as well as the old town, which we enjoyed very much. We were close to the steam train ride from Wernigerode to Brocken. Breakfast at the hotel was very good and the staff did a great job of organising people. The bed was not as comfortable as at many other hotels. The dinner menu was OK and servings generous, so Senior meals should be chosen by those seniors who don't eat a lot.
It would be nice to have a refrigerator in the room.

We chose this property to be close to the Harz Mountain Steam Train Depot, and it did not disappoint us. Our chosen railroad theme room had an excellent view of the steam train rail yard, so that we were able to watch the engines come and go. It was spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable. We especially liked having dinner in the restaurant and having a beer delivered by a model train.
Nothing.

The location, the proximity to the old town centre and view vof steam engine maintenance from the room window. The restaurant serves a great breakfast and the a la' carte menu is not bad if one opts to have supper as well. The main dining area has a nostalgic ambience with lots of erstwhile Railway artefacts and has a great view of the steam Railway yard where one can see steam engines refilling water and coal or shedding the cinders onto a pit. There are some working miniature train tracks with miniature trains running around the periphery wall and also on an overhead oval loop track. All in all, a great place for a steam train enthusiast like me.
It is definitely a bit pricey. I thought the roomwas a bit cramped, especially for two people.

Great location and loved the train theme that ran throughout the hotel. The train that delivered our drinks to the table was fun. Sadly it doesn’t serve all the tables. We had an interesting view of the coal yard from our bedroom window where the steam engines were serviced. Fridge in the room. Easy walk into the lovely town.

I love the railway themes around the hotel as well as the the restaurant that over looks the steam shed. The rooms are nice and spacious that are comfortable too. Check in was simple too, I only speak a small amount of German but the staff were very patient with us.
As much as I love staying at The Altora, I found that a couple of staff members seemed a bit rude towards us and as if they were fed up while working.
