This is a unique property that is a perfect introduction to Coober Pedy life. The rooms are underground but extremely spacious so no feeling of being enclosed. They are fitted out exceptionally and have a real luxurious feel. It’s really quiet so nothing to disturb at night but close enough to town. Mick and Irene are perfect hosts and helped us enjoy our stay. They introduced us to Aaron at Noble tours who took us on an adventure trip around and through Coober Pedy. Give him a try as well.
Nothing at all

The welcome from Irene was appreciated. She explained how things worked and also gave us an idea of what things to do in Coober Pedy. The underground apartment itself was a well thought out and convenient space. It was warm; it was comfortable; it had all the bits and pieces you needed in a BnB. Each day the provisions were replenished. We liked the little touches provided and admired the work that had gone into setting things up. Altogether, it was impressive.
Nothing to dislike.

Our stay with Irene and Mick at Dug Out B&B was a fabulous experience. Irene met us on arrival and explained tours etc that were available to do in the area. I especially loved hearing Irene tell how they've built the accommodation and we could see where they were continueing to dig out additional accommodation places. It was a unique experience and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Breakfasts were provided and Irene did some washing for us there which was most appreciated. Thank you Irene and Mick.

Loved the whole concept after worrying about claustrophobia. Didn't even register in there. Irene and Mick were very warm and welcoming. They had prepared all the necessary information as well all the little extra's above and beyond expectations. Food was stocked in the fridge including extra dietary needs - no trouble at all. The dugout was very comfortable and furnished to a 5 star standard. It was a labour of love to build and you felt the vibe all around you. Would have loved to have stayed longer.
Bed was a little too small for us and mattress, while perfect for some, was a bit hard for us. Tv in bedroom a bit small too. Just picking faults really as none of those things really a bother in the big picture.

Breakfast was included in the room, everything and much more than we needed was in the fridge and cupboards. Time spent with the owners and the stories of how they made the dugouts and their knowledge of the entire area in general was fantastic.
A real shame about the dwindling population of Cober Pedy. We picked a bad time maybe to visit when some things were closed. The Accommodation itself was awesome, so unique to anywhere else in the world we have stayed.

Everything was top notch. Mick and Irene are phenomenal hosts. Kind and attentive with great suggestions for activities to do in Coober Pedy. The accommodation itself is spectacular and very unique: a home dug into the side of a hill is not something you see every day! The interior is really something. It's incredibly spacious and dug directly into the rock. You can see veins of gypsum and opal running along the walls, as well as a mine tunnel above. There are holes for explosives and also holes drilled into the rock that serve as stashes for wine bottles. The furniture is almost all hand made as well. The rooms are kept at a very comfortable 20-22 degrees c, owing to the nature of the dugout. Mick and Irene have put a lot of thought and effort into the whole experience and it shows. There is a full kitchen and a fridge stocked with fresh bread, boiled eggs, ham, cheese, milk, juice, and water as well as butter and margarine. There is an honor bar with beer and wine with reasonable payment suggestions as well as complimentary port - a nice touch. Also if you don't want to deal with car rental from the airport, they have at least one 4x4 that they will loan out for very reasonable price. Location is also very convenient, about 6 minutes drive from the main street as well as to the airport. There are also some roos that like to hang out on the property! They're quite used to people and can be seen on the ridge right by the parking area every morning. I think the dug out b&b is an excellent choice for anyone visiting coober pedy, whether it's a family holiday, romantic getaway, or a road trip with friends. Do make sure you check out the night sky and sunrise/set while you're there. They are breathtaking. PS: i don't have any pictures of the interior because i made a huge video and i can't grab screenshots right now. It's truly beautiful and honestly photos don't do it justice.
I literally cannot find fault with the dug out. The hosts are wonderful people and the property is awesome.

This is hands down the best accommodation we’ve stayed in. A stunning oasis in the desert. Mick & Irene are lovely people who have created a beautiful home away from home. A labour of love built by Mick over 5 years. Very cleverly done. Extremely spacious there’s plenty of room. You don’t feel claustrophobic as they’ve managed to incorporate a light feel into a luxury dugout. There’s everything you need to cook your meals including a bbq & fire pit (which we cooked potatoes in). Plenty of delicious food provided for your breakfast. If you can drag yourself out of the comfy beds try to get up to see the sunrise one morning. Highly recommended

One of the best places we’ve ever stayed in, and definitely the most unusual one. Irene and Mick have created the Dug Out B&B with so much skill, care and an exquisite eye for design in even the smallest details, resulting in a luxurious experience in the most unexpected of places. Just the perfect place to stay in Coober Pedy!
We couldn’t have asked for anything else - everything was perfect!

This is a place perfectly in tune with its surroundings and a wonderful introduction to the joys of underground living. Extremely well appointed and spacious it is a stunning contrast to the post apocalyptic landscape that characterises most of the surrounding area. I can’t imagine a better place to stay on a road trip through Central Australia.
My only concern and this is a minor one is the lack of high speed internet. Cellular services in Outback Australia are nothing like they are in big population centres and signal strength can very dramatically between locations only a few metres apart. Being underground adds to the challenge of getting a good signal. We had no issues with voice calls but don’t expect to stream a movie or play online games while staying at this property.

Irene met us at our Dug Out B&B, she was extremely welcoming. Irene gave us many useful tips on where to visit to make our stay more memorable. Breakfast supplied was delicious, with a lot of Irene’s special touches. Bread from local bakery was supplied and delicious. Everything was clean and homely, we enjoyed a glass of our wine by the outside fire watching the stars , just stunning!
