Beautiful temple in an amazing location. Loved the walk up the mountain. Rooms are large, the floor mats and pillows are not very comfortable but ok for 1 night. None of us slept very well! We chose the seafood and egg option and dinner was very nice. Breakfast was ok. It would be good if there was a menu as we had no idea what some of the foods were. The fire ceremony is at 5.30am. Unfortunately we were at the back & couldn’t see much. We also went to the chanting ceremony which was good but expensive (additional cost of 5,000 yen. You don’t really see much of the monks during your stay but it was a fun & unique experience.

The sleeping mats & pillows!

Really interesting experience, we had a chance to watch the goma (fire) ceremony which is free for all guests to watch. We also paid to take part in meditation and calligraphy, both of which were great to watch The rooms are spacious and comfortable - the futons are also really comfortable to sleep on. Very clean. The onsens were lovely and very quiet as the hotel is not too busy - they are only open till 10pm though. Plenty of toilets (gender seperated) near the rooms and also sinks outside the room. The area surrounding the hotel is beautiful and walking around at night/first thing in the morning means that you are the only one around - which is a welcome change!

One of my friends didn't feel comfortable using the shared onsen and there was no cubicle showers available for use We didn't know what we were eating - an explanation of the food would have been helpful

Really wonderful experience staying here. The temple complex is beautiful, it was lovely to stroll around when it was quiet at sunset. The staff were all lovely and really helpful. Some did not speak English but were very happy to use Google Translate to help us! The room was basic but comfortable. Food was traditional and delicious - if you're not into traditional Japanese food then bring snacks. The onsen bath was a great way to relax after a day of hiking. We did the fire ceremony and the chanting ceremony and both were really lovely, it was an honour to experience.

I felt very welcomed and had an amazing experience. The facilities were great, beautiful and comfortable. The monks and staff were really friendly. I participated in a meditation session and they also offer other activities. The food was superb, tasty and well presented.

No complaints! I wish I knew what I was eating. Some of the dishes and ingredients are not familiar for westerners. The location is slightly remote and if you are carrying luggage is good to know that the closest train station doesn’t have coin lockers. Make sure you get off at Oji Station as the buses don’t run very often and you might need to get a taxi.

It was beautiful, peaceful and spiritual. The grounds are just breathtaking. If you want to rest your soul and mind, this is the place to stay. Sleeping on the futon was a little uncomfortable but I should have added more futons (they provide plenty of them). The public bath & shared showers were spotless. Dinner and breakfast were delicious, they observed my dietary restrictions, but portions were a little small (this is a temple, so it was expected). They were very helpful and kind and even called a taxi for us when we were leaving.

Their website is challenging to try to make reservations from overseas. The easiest way is to do it through Booking.com.

The location of the temple is incredible, you get the most beautiful views and exploring the area around the accommodation building is a must. It’s a quick train to Oji and then a bus; we figured it out on the day without any hassle at all. The fire ceremony was one of the most special and moving things we got the chance to experience in Japan, I’d recommend it to anyone. Food was delicious and the rooms are huge - the mattresses and pillows aren’t the most comfortable and we struggled to sleep a bit, but as it’s a temple we probably could have planned ahead and brought our own pillows to help with this.

This was one of the most beautiful places we’ve seen. Amazing traditional ryokan, great bath. Very friendly staff. The food was tasty! The overall experience is very special. The whole territory of the monastery is beautiful - both in the morning and at night. We took a little hike to the top of the hill, it was easy, and there’re sticks available.

Just be careful as some French tourists can be extremely rude and entitled - make sure to come to the rituals before them

A cozy stay with opportunity to experience buddhist culture. It helps that people understand the symbolism of the rituals. They speak some English and have pamphlets that explain the experiences you can purchase. We purchased the fire and chant ceremony and were blessed. It did not feel like there were many guests, so it was nice to enjoy the quiet baths and dinners. We hiked to the summit for about 20-30 min. Be sure to grab a hiking stick along the way. Very beautiful grounds and well maintained. We enjoyed the lit path at night. Yes, there are some bugs but surprisingly I didn't get many bites. Kaiseki meal was prepared beautifully with local ingredients of shiso, tofu, and pickled vegetables. They provide tea with your meal, so bring a water bottle to dinner, if you prefer.

Although there were maps of the area posted and signs all around, we were not always sure which way to go since everything was in japanese. We didn't mind finding other paths since all of them were beautiful and picturesque.

There is not enough space in this message box to give this place its rightful praise. I'll be short: if you want to stay at a Buddhist temple, eat spectacular food, sleep in a tatami room, bathe in an onsen, have amazing views over the surrounding landscape, meditate, experience authentic, spiritual Buddhist ceremonies, be welcomed by the nicest, most kind people you have ever met and go for a midnight stroll in a lantern-lit temple complex in the mountains - book this place right now! This is something extraordinary that you might never get to experience anywhere else in the world.

We stayed one night and enjoyed it very much: delicious dinner and breakfast (Japanese style sets), traditional Japanese-style rooms, lovely onsen, and of course the ceremony in the morning. Would definitely recommend going here if a temple stay is on the bucket list. After dinner (and in the morning), one can wander around the temple area, which is very nice because no other people except the guests staying overnight are around.
