Gorgeous old colonial style hotel in a great position . Lovely door outdoor courtyard restaurant with probably the best breakfast we have ever had ! Room was pool view and quiet . Agree with others it’s nonsense to charge $ for tiny bottle of water . Install some water coolers so people can refill. Spa was very good and v well priced . Happy hour was a bargain and the food in the restaurant was very good ( we only ate local food) although service at dinner could be a bit haphazard. Reception staff v helpful and booked transfer to airport for us , laundry pick up etc .
See above re water. Crazy tiny cups in room if you wanted tea.

This quaint hotel surpassed all our expectations. It felt like someone's house (which it was!) but really warm and welcoming thanks to the super friendly and efficient staff. Thank you to Arin and Sala at the restaurant for such great service and friendliness. All the food we had was superb, the hotel prepared our breakfast box for a 3am wake up call. Really enjoyed the surroundings. Its a short ride to Maliaboro and anywhere else you'd be going to, but I preferred to stay out of the main streets.
All the negatives stated in other reviews are true - there's a step in the bathroom that despite being warned, I still stubbed my toe in, the noise travels (but its only from people outside your door so its temporary!), furniture is a bit dated, not enough western breakfast choices but why would you want that much when the food is already plentiful and everything so tasty and what I hated was the balcony light that was impossible to find a switch to turn off, but the minute we asked at reception, they took care of it asap (needed a guy to come in with a ladder and dismantle it!).The pool was small but we had it to ourselves so no complaint there and it really is in such a lovely setting. But none of these points would stop me from returning as I loved it!

The Phoenix was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. The staff were so accomodating, always offering service with a smile. The room overlooked a part of the city (with local houses, gardens and frangipani trees), which I enjoyed as it gave a glimpse into the everyday life of Yogyakarta. A central location, and very easy to take a GRAB car/taxi ride from the front door. (I do not recommend walking to places, as it requires crossing a very busy road, though the security guard can escort you across the road if you ask) Overall, the hotel is elegant, and the pool, gym, and historical decor are well maintained. The restaurant and laundry service are reasonably priced considering the convenience of an in-house service. I would happily stay there again.
All was wonderful.

The staff were excellent - very helpful and always polite and friendly - nothing was too much trouble for them - 10/10. Breakfasts were ok - didn't quite hit the spot but I wouldn't mark them down much because of it - there was a lot of choice. The room was great - quite large, comfortable bed, and separate shower room and toilet. The pool was fine with loungers and clean towel service. The old colonial atmosphere was delightful. All in all a very good experience and I would have no hesitation in coming back if I ever go to Yogyakarat again.
There was little I didn't like but if I were to pick one thing, I suspect the bath and hand towels were given a cold wash rather than. a 60 degree hot wash. They looked a little grey and tired and were a bit of a letdown.

The breakfast was one of the best that a hotel can put up. Other F&B teams should take a leaf out of the book of this hotel to see how it is done. The room left a lot to be desired, as the place is immensely old and needs constant maintenance and upkeep. I'm sure the team is working really hard for this property, however, the property needs a far bigger overhaul to remain attractive and competitive in the coming years. However, all the facilities are available (despite the circumstances).
The place is getting run down fast. There's strong smell from the rooms, and the bathroom is suffering. Shower heads, faucets, etc. need regular upkeep to ensure basic functionality. It is good to stay in a place of history, however, not everyone will compensate their comfort (for the price) with historical association.

Staff was very attentive. First morning we asked for an Oat-porridge that was not part of the buffet breakfast: they immediately made it (perfect!), and every subsequent morning we did not have to ask for it, as soon as they saw us coming, they made it for us ! Very nice interior. Also, some history: during the short time Yogyakarta was the capitol of the country, then president Soekarno stayed at the Hotel, and his original office is still there !
Apart from an included buffet breakfast, the other meals in the Hotel are not a great value for money.

Fabulous staff - fun friendly and knowledgeable Great massage Had a great stay
Pool massively over-chlorinated - did horrible things to the enamel on my teeth! They clear tables too quickly. I hate to think how much unnecessary washing up they do just because they clear a table too quickly. And I'm sick to death of every hotel in the world inviting guests to care about the environment by reusing towels (something I'm very happy to do) and then changing them anyway! https://www.linkedin.com/posts/lyn-roseaman-7093026_sustainabletourism-marketing-environment-activity-7301564372538056706-02v4?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_android&rcm=ACoAAAEc1XkBgxaZWTMABDWWQsqQOlo4410IbiA

The Phoenix Hotel is a beautiful historic building that perfectly blends Chinese and Indonesian heritage. Its basically a living museum full of gorgeous wall tiles and antiques, plus adorable pairs of lovebirds in ornate cages - they even offer a quick tour around to explain it’s history and show you Indonesia's first president's office and secret side room. The in-house food is fantastic - the morning buffet offers a huge selection of Western, Asian and Indonesian dishes, including a super tasty Jamu station. If you haven't tried local dishes yet, this buffet is the perfect place to explore Indonesian cuisine. For our Borobudur Temple visit, we used the hotel's transport service and they thoughtfully prepared a huge packed breakfast for the journey. The driver is yours for around 5 hours so you can easily tick off a few other sights. After a day of touristing I highly recommend heading to the Vino Bar & Cafe for some awesome cocktails (or a hot chocolate!) and a game of pool. As they have the same menu as the main dining restaurant, its also a great place to hang out in the evenings. The location is ideal as you can walk to Jalan Malioboro's shops and museums but the traffic can be a bit full on, I recommend getting either a Blue Bird Taxi or one of the tuk-tuks conveniently parked out front. 10/10 - an incredibly beautiful building full of antiques and art, with a fascinating history and awesome staff. A must-stay in Yogyakarta!

Location: Excellent. The hotel is conveniently located near Malioboro Street and Yogyakarta Train Station, within a 2km radius. Service: Good. ! The receptionist spoke good English and even walked with me to show my room, which was a nice touch. Cleanliness & Hygiene: Overall good. The room and common areas were well-maintained. I walked to the hotel area and its really kept well Room & Amenities: The bed was comfortable, and there was a power socket near the table, which was convenient. However, the Water Pressure: Good and consistent.
The room felt quite dark and could use better lighting.

Responsive staff members to my questions and requests. The room, 351, was spacious and clean. Many great ornaments in the building and foyer about Javanese culture, the reliefs on the walls as replicas from Borobudor Temple - great for setting the atmosphere of Central Java. Well done to the designers. The tour of the building was wonderful and informative - the Sukarno rooms, the Sukarno Tree. The Tour Guide was very helpful and informative. And it was free of charge!! I am very glad I went on the tour.
When I made the booking, I was under the impression I was getting a room with a balcony. It's not important. All was fine. Thanks to your staff. Please, treat them well and respectfully. They work long hours, and always on their feet.
