It was very atmospheric and well maintained. There was a lovely restaurant and pool area and the tents were comfortable. The staff were very attentive. The manager gave us an upgrade to a luxury tent when he found out it was our 40th anniversary holiday and were treated to dinner on our terrace, which was lovely. The safari and the separate village tour were both well led and worth doing. Sachinthana, the trainee naturalist accompanied us on both of them and was very attentive.

Unfortunately, we were targeted by a troop of monkeys in our first tent. They stole things from the terrace and even managed to get into the tent one afternoon while we’re out at the pool. They were probably initially attracted by some biscuits we left on our terrace and were just doing what monkeys do, but it was a bit unsettling.

The property is gorgeous and very natural. There are no eye-sores, everything is very blended with nature. The two swimming pools were really lovely and the restaurant buffet dinners were delicious. The best part was the general manager who went above and beyond to make sure we had a great stay. He engaged with our kids and made sure they stayed busy with basketball, volleyball, arranged a village walk across the river, and made special arrangements on our safari to celebrate my son's birthday. He was like a traditional hotel general manager who treats everybody like his personal guest. It's a really special place and definitely a great base for visiting both Udawalawe and Yala parks.

Incredibly well designed camping experience, the perfect balance of hotel amenities (Great pools, restaurant & bar) with the rustic outdoors. Tents are great, balcony lovely and so peaceful in the evenings. We played badminton and took the bicycles out for a spin through udawalawe. This was the most friendliest village we came across all trip, a lovely home feel (although we had great experiences throughout). If you want a stay that's different to all the others in Sri Lanka, look no further!

Athgira provided a great base for the Udawalawe safari and they alao organsised the safari for us through their own company. this was an excellent service. However there is not alot to do other than the safari and if you have an early morning safari (5.30am) you are back by 10am leaving a whole day to fill in a hot and humid jungle location. The pool however provided great respite.

We stayed 5 nights here and so really got to know the place. Staff very friendly and competent. Want to make your stay as lovely as possible. Very clean and spacious tents. Has plenty of sockets for charging cameras etc and pleased that uk sockets fit. Food was good They organised 2 safari for us; a morning one and an all day. Bothe were excellent and the all day one kitty and assistant came from the hotel to prepare breakfast 😀

Athgira hotel was beautiful and staff were extremely accommodating organising our safaris and meals around these. We had a very early 5.30am start for our second safari and staff had tea and coffee ready for us and then a later breakfast awaiting our return. They also organised a game of cricket with their staff and our teens! Had a great time.

We had rented 3 standard tent rooms and stayed here for 2 nights. In general, we were very satisfied with the stay. The staff acted friendly and welcoming. The rooms were quite excellent, even if the tent cloth bears the mark of many years of wear. The bathroom was ok and there was hot water and a good shower. It was nice and clean everywhere. The breakfast was a buffet and it was quite outstanding. For dinner, we tried both their barbecue and a la carte dishes. Both parts were excellent, but it should be noted that the prices are on the high end. There are two excellent swimming pools. All in all, we can recommend staying overnight at Athgira River Camping.

The only downside was that a small fridge and an electric kettle were missing. Also note that there is no air conditioning in the tents.

Beautiful location, the accommodation is very good very comfortable beds and good shower. The swimming pool I loved a very relaxing place to spend an afternoon. We did the early morning Safari which I really enjoyed.

The breakfast selection wasn’t great and the first night we were there they had a buffet for dinner my husband loves the rice dhal and curries but I couldn’t find much to eat. It’s not near restaurants so it’s the only show in town! Some of the staff are strange. Again they told us wait in reception for the early morning safari and the guy was waiting for us at the main gate!,

Exceeded my expectations lovely setting.and close to the National Park. I was initially concerned with lack of airconditioning but it wasnt an issue at all. Loved the 2 swimming pools. Welcoming staff. The buffet food was a pleasant surprise- really good options. Loved that a special effort was made for Christmas celebrations.

No safety box.

This place is a hidden paradise. Set amongst lushes palms and a green valley. Beautiful safari style tents adorned with palm roofs and outdoor bathrooms, look down over an exotic and babling river with shingle beach. Bathing is encouraged here and the management even suggests that they bring you a beer down whilst you sit in the shallows. You will meet lovely Sri Lankan locals here, paddling, chatting and even carrying out their daily laundry wash. This place is so idylic and made even more special by the team of staff. Nothing is too much trouble and the Manager, Prassanna, mentors his staff with a naturing and caring manner. Some of his team are only trainees and it is these staff that are truly a pleasure to meet. We'd love to thank all the team but especially, Chalani, Maheesh, Kithumi, Chanacka and Wimakthi. The Head Chef Mr Fernando delivers amazing dishes, eaten on the river bank, and under twinkling lights. Its a very romantic and intoxicating setting. The Chef also provides cooking tips for any dish you like and additionally advises about panning for tiny pieces of Ruby fragments that can be found in the river. My wife and I spent a few hours in the warm waters, doing this and bagged around 30 small chips of Ruby. It was a very memorable experience.
