Delighted to have found this place. Arranged over four floors, all rooms have outside doors and common balconies with views down the valley. The magic happens in a big area that is mostly open. A cafe that serves excellent and good value food all day. A swing to relax on. Tables with views. Steps pass by the property to other paces higher up the hill, so random people drop in for refreshments and conversations start up between people. The inside part has a very chilled out vibe with low cushions, books, games, telescope and sometimes five sleeping very obedient dogs. All of this is very ably overseen by Krishan and his business partner Aparna. Their concern for the guests shines through. Krishan will sit with you if you want and tell you all about the things to do in the area. He’s a walking encyclopaedia. Krishan’s sister Sakshi runs a cafe up the hill from The Unmad and supplies it with delicious fresh cakes and cookies every morning. Check out the chocolate chip cookies dusted with coconut. The thing I noticed was how many people are returning guests. Always a good indicator. Great job Krishan, Aparna and team. You made my trip more memorable 👏

Comfortable and clean property. Good hot water. Located in a quiet area in upper Dharmakot - short walk downhill to the strip of cafes in Dharmkot and 10 minutes from Tushita, about 20-25 minutes walk down to Mcloed Ganj. Uphill walk on the way back but good exercise! Can start the trek to Triund from the property - the owner was very helpful in giving me a map. Enjoyed eating at the property, great choice of food for breakfast and dinner. All of the staff were kind and accommodating - I felt very safe as a solo female traveller. Highly recommend - I would stay again.

Very peaceful during the day, but could hear noise from town for a couple of hours in the evenings - as previous travellers have mentioned, there seemed to be a strict curfew and it was no problem with earplugs.

The unforgettable views, the size and comfort of the room, always hot water in the shower, nice restaurant with many options inside the property. I especially want to mention Krishan the loveable and welcoming manager of the property. We had some great talks during my stay there, and he was also charming and kind enough to offer me a nice trip to see sunset from another property of the Unmad chain.

Location is about 10-15 minutes walk on a long trail to a higher area above the village center, with many steps to climb up to the lobby/restaurant area and to the room. It's quite a physical effort if you are not too fit :) As a solo woman traveller I did not like walking back to the hotel at the end of the day when it's already dark outside. With that said, the height is the reason you get such outstanding views over the village and valley, so it's a tradeoff... Cleaning - I spent 10 days in the place and no one came to clean my room or change sheets. When people had some meals on the balcony - leftovers and dirty plates could be left for a full day or even overnight without someone taking it

Everything about our stay at The Unmad was incredible—it was truly a highlight of our trip and far exceeded our expectations. Staying here felt like a dream come true. The location is perfect for exploring Upper Dharamkot, Dharamkot, McLeod Ganj, and Dharamshala. You can easily walk to Gallu Waterfalls or Triund from the property. Getting around is simple—whether you prefer walking or taking inexpensive cabs and rickshaws. The nearby Tushita Meditation Centre, with its peaceful library, cozy cafés, and fantastic restaurants, is a must-visit. The Unmad itself offers amazing food and stands out for creating a truly memorable experience—not just a place to sleep. Their bakery/café has a warm, welcoming vibe, stunning views, and a cozy atmosphere that makes you want to linger. Highly recommend the cooking classes there! There are also opportunities for a head massage and foot massage as well as yoga classes which is fantastic too!

Aparna was an excellent host. The staff were courteous. The breakfast and dinners were healthy and tasty. The view from room was awesome. Good value for money.

There were 110 steps from road to our room. When it rains, walking through these stairs is like walking through waterfall. Our shoes got drenched completely. There were all kind of bugs (snails, crickets, flies, even leeches) on the property and some even in the room. They said our stay was paid when we were there. After we left they called to say it was not. They should do better than this.

Lovely place in the mountains very close to treks to a waterfall and the Triund Trek. Our room was comfy and large with a lovely view. The restaurant had great food and the staff were very chilled and friendly. We got some great recommendations and help when needed. There’s also a little cafe at the top of the hill which is an idyllic spot for breakfast. We really enjoyed our stay and found it the perfect base to explore the area!

During the day it was so so peaceful but some place in the town was quite loud at night - they seemed to have a strict deadline at 10ish but if you’re a light / early sleeper ear plugs might be useful!

Can't recommend this place highly enough to people visiting the area. Krishan and Aparna (and the rest of the team) were fantastic hosts, who were super friendly, providing us with numerous recommendations and helping us out immensely when we fell sick. The accommodation has stunning views, our room had all the necessary amenities including hot water and a nice table and chairs on the balcony looking out over the valley. The Unmad also has it's own kitchen with a fantastic selection of tasty food and a nice area to chill. You can also hang out with the resident dogs :) Upper Dharamkot is more peaceful than McLeod Ganj and is also a perfect base for trekking. We had a wonderful time and hope to return again in the future! Many thanks!

Not a negative per se, but be aware you have to be relatively fit to deal with the steps leading up to the accommodation and the elevation in the surrounding area

We enjoyed our stay and ended up staying for extra days as Dharamkot is really a lovely place to rest Easy location to attend the Tushita meditation centre daily The room size is large enough and pretty view/nature outside Staff were able to assist with booking some flights for us which we found hard on our international credit cards and we were very grateful for this Better rate if you book direct with place rather than through booking.com

They kindly organised a taxi service to Amritsar, however, the driver didn't have any seatbelts and we had to constantly ask him not to use his mobile phone while driving. We suggest that this taxi driver not be used in future. For a 5hr drive this was a really unpleasant experience. The hot water in the shower was limited even if turned on for the required period beforehand - needed to have a rapid 2 minute shower which can be challenging if trying to wash your hair and the water pressure wasn't great.

Amazing hotel, with perfect views. Very quiet. Aparna the host was super friendly and super helpful to all our needs. Food in the restaurant was also great. The hotel is slightly out of the busy center of Dharamkot so required a little walking to see other places but for us- who wanted quiet and beautiful setting it was a perfect match. Will definitely come again. Note that as the hotel is high and requires climbing a lot of steps to the room. As generally this whole area is going up and down it was ok for us.

Many steps to reach the room may be problematic for some people.

We enjoyed our stay at Aparna's place with her Team! It was my sister's first experience in Asia, and everything went very well. Our room was clean, cozy, full of light, and had a great view at sunrise and sunset. We had enough blankets to feel comfortable in March. There was easy access to the Triund hike and many other places. The atmosphere was great and calm, with no noise around at any time of the day. And of course, the food in the café was delicious! Thanks again to Aparna and Krishan!

For us everything was great but for people who don't like to walk a lot, maybe you need to plan to use a taxi (but depends where you want to go ;)
