Quiet comfortable stay. We had the best time learning a dance and song with other travelers. The host is an 8th generation inn keeper who seems to love sharing/ teaching about the local history and culture. Hiking the Nakasendo trail and exploring Magome in the evening was the most memorable part of this trip. Wish we would have stayed longer.
Stairs were pretty steep which made going to the bathroom in the middle of the night an adventure.

This was our favorite stay out of our entire Japan trip! The whole experience was absolutely incredible. Our room and tatami beds were incredibly comfortable, and we had an amazing breakfast and dinner. The highlight was that the owner (8th generation of his family to run the inn) taught us a traditional samurai song and dance at the end of the night. He was so thoughtful in teaching us about the inn and the Nakasendo trail and made us feel so comfortable. After a day's hike, this was the perfect end to the day. If you want to have a traditional ryokan experience - public wooden baths, japanese style meals, yukata robes, tatami rooms, this is the place!
Nothing!

Very friendly reception. We were happy to be able to pick a time slot (half an hour) upon arrival to enjoy the onsen privately, still separated by gender of course. The dinner was abundant and a very nice experience in a traditional dining area but with small chairs instead of sitting on the ground. The location is superb, we had a nice view of the old road passing in front of the ryokan.
The dinner had water and green tea included and there was an option to order other drinks like beer and sake, which is great, but we didn't really get a chance to order anything because no one was there until we finished eating.

Great traditional Ryokan, in a perfect location for the Magome to Tsumago walk. Our room had it's own toilet and little sink which was very handy. I liked that you booked a time for the onsen when you checked in as it was small and wouldn't fit a second person comfortably. There was a pot of hot water in our room when we checked in to make tea and pots available by reception with ice cold water. We found the futons to be very comfortable and much thicker than other Ryokan we have stayed at. Staff were friendly, and spoke some English. Dinner is served at 6pm and was delicious with a range of small dishes, plenty of food. Breakfast was at 7.30am also a range of small dishes, I felt bad as I couldn't eat that much food so early in the morning. Walls are thin, so you can hear other guests but eveyone was very courteous so not really an issue. The charm of a character building.

From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed warmly, it was a excellent experience for a Ryokan very authentic. The food was excellent for breakfast and dinner. All night you could hear the water running through the water wheels in the rain on the roof it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. They are tattoo friendly for the public bath, which you get your own slotted time. Plenty of hot water and tea. For the price you cannot beat it it’s extremely and expensive for everything that you receive a great value. I hope to come back one day.
That I couldn’t stay longer, if you are handicapped or stair challenged ask for a room on the first floor. The stairs are steep, but that is how Ryokans can be

This little traditional guesthouse offered delicious meals (dinner and breakfast) as part of the fare, a private steam bath, and a comfortable space for sleeping and passing time. The owners are lovely.
We did not anticipate the bathroom spaces being outside the bedrooms. Somehow we missed that in our preparations. You have to leave your room to go to a hallway with maybe 6 toilets (each in its own room with a door closed) segregated by gender. There is a separate bathing space on a different floor that requires reservation at your arrival time.

This place is awesome. Located in the beautiful village of Magome, it can be quite hard to find a Ryokan. But we were lucky to get such a good one. The room was neatly prepared (tea and snacks were available), the onsen is small but good to use and the best part os the food. We messaged them beforehand to give our food requests (vegetarian food) and instead of just cutting the meat products, they gave us an entirely different course. The food was freshly made, there were a lot of variations and you could see that they put in a lot of lpve and effort making dinner and breakfast. For us it was the best dinner and breakfast we ever had at a hotel. On top we got to see a little traditional performance by the owner which was also very nice!

very well situated in magome to begin a not difficult & very worthwhile/scenic trek on the 8km portion of the nakasendō trail that ends in tsumago. room was quite spacious & food was carefully prepared, generously served & tasty. they also have a quite large private parking lot on a small/narrow/twisting/potholed tiny roadway that snakes its way parallel to & behind the "main strip" & isn't easy to locate ... so probably best to ask at the ryokan & have someone (try to) direct u -- in what's apt to be japanese only
many have rightfully "complained" abt the non-private/communal bathrooms being a floor down from where they slept. this less bothered me in terms of showering, but would've been a drag in the middle of the night when using the men's toilets on that rather tight & steeply-stepped lower floor ... had i not noticed that there were individual little toilet rooms/stalls designated for women on the floor where we slept, which were private -- ie, 1 person at a time -- & totally empty in those wee hours. [...just sayin']

Lovely place, with friendly family who look after you very well. You book your bath slot on arrival and have a half hour to enjoy your (very) hot bath/Onsen in their wooden bathtub. Dinner and breakfast are provided and were excellent. We don’t eat meat and they catered for that. A perfect place if you’re planning to walk to Magome on the Nakesendo Way.
The walk up from the bus is steep and with luggage can be hard. You share the bathroom, but we knew and expected that and it wasn’t a problem. The gents are two floors below where your room is so be prepared and with a low doorframe very easy to hit your head.

I liked everything! The room was spacious and the mattresses were very comfortable. There was tea and biscuits left in our room on arrival and the next day also which we thought was a lovely touch. We stayed 2 nights. The food was excellent, it was prepared and waiting for us at breakfast and dinner. We asked for the vegetarian option when we booked and it was delicious. Fabulous location and the staff were really welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay here.
The only thing was having to go down the small stairway to use the bathroom as we didn't have one with our room but we quickly got used to that
