The ryokan owner went out of his way to help us with transport to hard to reach places and detailed information on public transport. Gave us lifts when he had time. Room was comfortable. Onsen had great view of the mountains and outdoor lava rock thermal pool. Temperature of indoor pool was right for extended soaking. Outdoor pool is lukewarm but still warm enough to enjoy outdoor air and snow views in winter for short time before going indoors. Finishing each day with a warm soak in the onsen followed by massage chair was just perfect before dinner. Breakfasts and dinners were delicious, filling and creative. Only needed light lunch or snack despite exercising a lot in the snow. The ryokan is situated in a beautiful, quiet location, surrounded by nature, on edge of town.

English language difficulties with staff and general hotel information, except for ryokan owner who is proficient in English. Reverse cycle air conditioner in room had to be running to heat room in winter, causing air to become very dry. Difficult to get around for sightseeing or activities without private or rental car because the local bus service completes only one round per hour.

This was my first trip to Japan and I wanted to have an authentic experience of Japanese culture. Akasawa Ryokan not only provided traditional onsen experience in Ryokan but also offered great hospitality to get places around the town. As a foreigner traveling Japan for the first time, I felt so welcomed. Also I really enjoyed breakfast and dinner there as well, which were delicious and authentic. Unforgettable experience at Akasawa Ryokan. I would love to go back.

There were none that I didn't like. I loved everything I experienced there.

Staying in the holiday home was a truly amazing experience. The house is new, and contains everything we needed for a relaxing stay. The private onsen can be adjusted to your liking.

Just good to know: the house is in a quiet village without restaurants or shops. Be prepared to bring supplies and relax.

We loved our Japanese-style room and the extremely comfortable beds. We slept with the windows open for cool air, listening to the river. The staff were friendly and helpful, a really wonderful owner. We loved being greeted by a kitty and watching them enjoy the property! We enjoyed the private onsen. Would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful ryokan.

We stayed 2 nights at the Akasawa and enjoyed our stay . The ryokan was cosy , but what stood out was the little touches that made us feel welcome , eg the complementary coffee, tea and snacks at the lobby, the comfortable seating next to the waterfall view , and the company of the ryokan pets (friendly dogs and cats). The staff balanced both privacy and service . An experience to remember

It was a very warm ryokan that made us feel right at home from the start. Staff are very friendly and provide excellent customer service, even though our children were not the quietest of guests. The kotatsu in the room was perfect for a winter stay in the mountains. The onsen was also fantastic! As mentioned frequently, the cats are part of the staff - so it’s great for animal lovers!

This has nothing to do with the property itself, but it is a distance from many places such as the ski field. However, because we loved the place so much, the 20 mins drive to and from the snow each day with our young children weren’t a bother at all!

Dinner was expensive, but had a lot of different delicacies to try. Staff was very welcoming and explained well, drove me to the bus station next morning. Futon was very comfortable.

Very natural place, so sleep may be disturbed by outside sounds for some people.

Property had a tranquil location and most importantly staff (owner) was extremely kind and helpful. Dropped us at hiking location and bus station.

Onsen can be slightly more clean.
