We loved how friendly, energetic and lovely the whole family at Yamashiroya was, it made the stay so much better, paired with the amazing food that was served at every meal, and topped off with different amazing onsen facilities, this place was a 11/10!

Absolutely nothing

This was one of 4 ryokan that we stayed in during our tour of Kyushu. It was the cheapest and the most informal. It is also a little off the beaten track, but you can get picked up and dropped off at the local station. It has the feel of a mountain cabin, with old furniture and decor. It is, however, wonderfully homely and the owners are just the loveliest people. It also has 4 family onsen, that you can lock for privacy. The food is excellent, and there is a lot of it. The current owner is the third generation, and speaks excellent English.

It's a little out of Yufuin, 25 minutes including car ride and train. We didn't get the chance to explore the neighborhood although the views were lovely. Not sure what else is around the ryokan as we only stayed one night.

quaint little ryokan that’s ghibli themed. very peaceful and tranquil, a great place for you to unwind and relax in japan’s countryside. the staff were amazing and friendly, we had a great time chatting with them when they served us food and they treated us with lots of warmth and kindness. the room was large and clean, futon was comfortable, and they even gave us cute yukatas to wear around the ryokan. we got to try two of the private baths and they were a great experience - well-maintained and peaceful. the food (both breakfast and dinner) was phenomenal and we ate till we were stuffed. definitely would recommend friends and family to come if they want a taste of traditional japanese hospitality

it was slightly far away from other sights - there’s not much to do/see in yunohira itself, though we didn’t really find that to be a problem as we were focused on just unwinding within the ryokan itself. note that the ryokan’s carpark is located a short stair walk above the ryokan itself (and the ryokan has stairs) so you might want to consider packing a smaller bag instead of bringing your whole luggage down to make it easier for you.

Yamashiroya is a lovely retreat in a small village away from the tourist hotspots like Yufuin or Beppu. If you are looking for a place with nothing then flush green hills around this is the place to go. Take it as an experience as the exceptional friendly hosts will welcome you to their house, treat you to fantastic food and relax in the wonderful private baths before/after. Foreigners and especially Singles are also welcomed, which is another big plus! Explanations of the facilities and the different dinner/breakfast courses are provided in English.

Nothing

Amazing breakfast and kaiseki dinner (you will be very well-fed!). Room is spacious. They have variety of private onsens that you can choose from and enjoy with your partner, the open air one was so beautiful. Peaceful stay and friendly hosts - we will miss them!

It’s located a train ride away from Yufuin, and around the onsen there’s nothing much there. Can be a bit inconvenient to get to, but hosts were very helpful (plus provide pickup service from Yunohira station to the ryokan)

We are 6 friends from Malaysia and was our first visit to Yunohira, a little onsen town. We are thankful to choose to stay at Ryokan Yamashiroya. The host is very responsive to our queries before our trip and during our stay. After we parked the car at the allocated parking lot, the host fetched all of us to the ryokan on a narrow road and this save our energy lugging our luggages to the ryokan. We enjoyed our stay in the spacious and clean rooms plus the few private onsen were a bonus to us! We also enjoyed the sumptous dinner and breakfast in a private room with wearing the yukata for photos. Upon our checkout, the host fetched all of us back to our car. Highly recommended!

Low water pressure in one indoor onsen. Other onsen are excellent!

Hosts were super friendly and able to communicate smoothly in English. Food was excellent. I like how quiet it is and the room is very comfortable. It was freezing cold in the outdoor onsen at night but as soon as I am in the onsen it was fine and I loved it. We walked through the cobblestone streets nearby and got some nice photos. There’s not much to do in the surroundings but allows you focus on resting.

It’s not a bad thing it’s just we aren’t used to the hard wheat pillow so didn’t use it for sleeping. The mattress is nice and comfy I was able to sleep soundly without the pillow but I miss having a soft pillow.

The hosts were very kind and friendly. The food was one of the best I’ve taken in Japan (consider I had plenty of business trips in Japan before and attended a lot of banquets hosted by large corporations). The onsens were very comfortable. The room was quiet and cozy with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. We also like the decor and the collection of vintage items. Very surprised to find out that the old analog phone in our room was still working! After all, we felt at home in this ryokan because the hosts serve their guests with all their hearts. Will definitely come back.

It’s a bit remote but for us it’s just fine because we prefer to stay in a quiet place. Part of the decoration is old and starting to fall apart but nothing would affect your comfort.

I like everything about this Onsen Hotel. The hotel is very nice and warm. We have a warm welcome from the husband and wife who manage this hotel. Due to the hotel is located at down hill and the road in front of the hotel is super narrow, the husband drive his car to help carry our luggage while we have our Alpha park at the hotel parking at the side roads. Both husband and wife help us to carry the luggage up to our rooms and explain in details about the 'yukata' and room/hotel facilities. The rooms we slept also is super neat, tidy and warm. Our rooms are come with the toilet. For the bathroom, is actually the Onsen area. If u wan to take the bath, just check which Onsen rooms are available and lock it to have your private Onsen session. So this is definitely suit our needs cause we are too shy for using public Onsen. Last but not least is their dinner and breakfast. The foods are very delicious and ready on time for us.

Nothing. I like everything.
