This hotel has a rustic, simple charm, especially in February when covered in snow. The staff were very accommodating and communicated as best as possible with us in English. Breakfast was amazing! In addition to the Japanese style food served (hot and cold fish, miso soup, rice, pickles, salads, etc.) as usual for breakfast, there were also scrambled eggs and bacon, and the most delicious mushroom/vegetable dish cooked in individual hot pots at your table. Linens, towels and the yakutas provided were plentiful and fresh. Communal toilet, ablution and onsen baths were very clean. Altho the hotel was full, the facilities never felt crowded. There are two, private onsen baths that can be booked at extra cost. On the edge of the Shiretoko Peninsula National Park, the hotel is well-located for park and other outdoor activities, but is a long-ish walk into Utoro, the nearest town.

Once again, the curse of a Booking.com reservation meant we got the worst room in the house. This one, however, was downright dangerous; we had a heavy smell of combustion in our room on check-in, causing: headache, nausea and burning eyes. I was worried about carbon monoxide and there was no alarm, as far as I could see. We were moved to a different room at my request, which was smaller. Moreover, the garden/Mountain view that was supposed to exist was, instead, the backside of another building and a tank of some description. Both rooms were in a noisy corridor, immediately adjacent to microwave/coffee/water points. My advice is to ask for a room on the second floor, tho you will have to carry your own bags up the stairs.

Shiretoko Village was an excellent hotel. The breakfast was a traditional Japanese buffet style (called "Viking" in Japanese). The food was very good - and I am not a breakfast person usually! The room was also comfortable (4-person family room) and was in the annex building. The onsen was simple but perfect - a nice square area with two baths: a "colder" one (still very hot) and an (extremely) hot one. If you like hotel onsen and very hot baths, you will enjoy this one.

For someone who did not have a car, walking to and from Shiretoko Utoro took about 15-20 minutes. Some other people mentioned an afternoon bus in their reviews but I asked (in Japanese) and they were not sure what I was referring to. Keep this in mind when you book this place. It is better to come by car.

Breakfast was delicious and included a large assortment of various items. Decorations in the common areas were quaint and everything felt cozy. Use of the public bath was convenient (open overnight). We didn't use the private showers, but they were available. The type of accomodation (with shared bathrooms and such) means less comfort than private hotel room, but that's obvious when booking.

We came with a rental car, so I don't know how the public transit was, but the house is about a 15-20 minute walk from the town center and some other restaurants. That wasn't a problem for us in May, but it might be good to keep in mind depending how and when you visit!

A nice place, easy to reach if you have a car. The atmosphere is relaxed, a sort of "ryokan hostel" (we stayed in a double room, not in the dorm), nice breakfast and great dinner. The onsen is what you need after a hiking day in shiretoko peninsula. A plus: the free green tea dispenser.

Very well located, at walking distance to Godzilla rock, 7 eleven, foot onsen. The Onsen was spaceous enough, clean facilities and you can also go for 500 yen private Onsen. The hotel has microwave, tea and water dispensers, shared bathrooms were clean and not crowded. Room was big, tatami was confortable. They provide yukatas. Breakfast was typical japanese, good one. There is small store inside the hotel to buy ramen and souvenirs.

The style is traditional japanese, don’t expect a renovated or westernised facility, everything was super clean and had everything we needed

If you have a car the hotel is in a great location Onsen was lovely and open all night (and tattoo friendly!) Spacious Japanese-style rooms Heater in room was good and fast working for winter stays

Bugs in the men’s toilet No showers except within the onsen - this is absolutely fine but would be better for this to be clearer in the hotel description No carbon monoxide meter

Cozy common space You get everything you need The onsen :)

Matress was a folding matress Only one ladies toilet for the whole hostel without proper working flush, which also smelled disgusting sometimes Be prepared in winter: quite far from the bus station with suitcases, you have to walk uphill and the sidewalk is covered in snow

Good location easy walkable to the waterfront. Traditional breakfast was exceptional value, staff where all very helpful and friendly. Somewhat traditional and fairly charming but overall a little tired.

The property isn’t aging well and in places feels a little neglected. Get past that and it’s a comfortable friendly location with lots of interesting guests. I tried the Onsen but it felt a little run down and dirty to me so didn’t try is again.

The dorm beds provided great privacy and were some of the most comfortable hostel beds I've experienced. Full access to the onsen, regardless of having tattoos, was fantastic. The common space was very cozy.

Hotel located up the hill from the town, and any restaurants, which made getting food a trek. No real kitchen options, just a microwave. Not a walkable location, but that makes sense for the region.

Affordable hostel with all the facilities you need. Location very central to Utoro and Shiretoko Peninsula. Non-Japanese speaking friendly. The hostel is decorated with traditional Ainu-style sculptures, paintings and carvings. Very pretty lodge.

Washing machine and dryer were not free, they are coin operated. The women's onsen only had two pools.
