We really like the room, traditional Japanese room feel with good view of the mountains. Futon bed was comfortable. Breakfast was good and the overall service is great. Loved the onsen, tried the day and night, outdoors and indoors pools. Walking distance to a row of eateries across the road. Walkable to Jigokudani and the hotel is just 5mins away to the main bus station.

There is no "Do not disturb" sign, got a slight shock when they came in to make the bed for us. We were in the room and they probably didnt hear us when we replied to them pressing the doorbell. Wish for more privacy.

Hotel Mahoroba has a relatively inexpensive shuttle option from Sapporo to Noboribetsu which made the transfer with all our luggage easy. The staff were polite and welcoming. We had a spacious suite with a sitting area and private onsen bath. It's absolutely worth it to spend extra for this amenity if you can, but if you can't, don't worry. The two expansive onsen facilities provided numerous baths and switch between men and women each day, so you can experience them both. Without a doubt, my favorite was the outdoor pools on B2. There is something surreal about sitting in steaming hot mineral water as fat flakes of snow drift down. It was incredible! If we are ever in Noboribetsu again, we will return to Hotel Mahoroba.

The buffet meals were plentiful, but there are numerous excellent restaurants in town. I'd suggest venturing out of the hotel for more varied options.

Onsen pools are very clean and interesting; sulfur water was exceptional. Many options including cold water plunge and sauna. The buffet was phenomenal and had many fresh seafood options. I was very happy. Compared to other onsen towns, of which I have visited a dozen, this hotel has good upkeep and a sense of quality and style I didn’t quite expect. Although it may seem strange to you, I thought the elevator doors were particularly pretty. The details speak out at the pride the hotel keepers have in their establishment. My child was welcomed and treated well. The resort clothing was comfortable and the jacket had a convenient pocket for keys and a little money. Also the front staff was kind to me by making sure I had the largest sized slippers available. I’m happy I stayed here.

There must be other foreigners who don’t understand the onsen rules and so a kind of grumpy onsen staff who judges us all like children and snaps about things before we even commit a sin. Was a little embarrassing to be treated so, as I have lived in Japan 8 years. However it is mildly understandable as there must be a stress on them from constantly keeping the rules

We had a very spacious and clean room, with comfortable futon. I really enjoyed the fact they had a fancy waterslide in the onsen, and they had a great variety of baths, including massage based ones with jets and a stream of water from above which gave a great shoulder massage. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Great breakfast buffet with plenty of variety. Lots to explore in the onsen. Location was walking distance to shops/konbini and Jigokudane valley. We also stayed in Grand Hotel, while similar, I personally liked this one more. Note there's usually one side of the bath which isn't as good as the other.. for both, the women's onsen side sounded better than the men's.

Didn't know which bath was which because they didn't also have them in English (and couldn't translate without a phone)

Onsen & buffet dinner is great.

Very slow check-in & check-out, limited no. if front desk staff. Facilities are little dated.

Old hotel but very clean. The elevators are very quick contrary to elevators in old facilities. Great bathing facilities with outdoor and indoor baths and complimentary skin care and lotion products for use after bathing. All you can eat buffet style breakfast and dinner. Staff are very respectful and do not seem to keep tabs on how long you stay or rush you to finish eating. I stayed for two nights and the food choices although very diverse—could be repetitive. Location: 10 min walk to bear park base and 13 min walk to entrance of Hell Valley.

Some chairs in the bathing common areas are torn and need replacement. The bathing facilities are switched between men and women around a certain time and there is no code to secure the women bathing area—basically an all-open access.

We booked a room for family of 3, in Japanese style room at first, but it was too small for 3 futon beds. I wonder why it was indicated room for 3 at the website. We had to upgrade to Western style room (did not know there were 2 options as was not available at the booking stage) and that was fantastic. The Customer Service Wakashi was amazing, with her speed of service to resolve our room issue. Onsen was fabulous. It was my first time seeing such extensive variety of pool options for Onsen from Acid to Sulphur Onsen. The amenities in Onsen was extensive beyond basic, with facial cleansing and moisturiser, and hair serum too.

Nothing to complain about.

This was the 3rd Onsen hotel that we have stayed and it is the only onsen that is really hot. We really enjoyed the onsen during our stay in this hotel. The hotel location is also very good, there are many shops and restaurants opposite the hotel (1 min walk) and only 4 mins walk to hell valley. The premium buffet is very good, must try. We want to give special thanks to the hotel for helping us organise the birthday celebration for my wife and her good friend. They really went extra miles to help us make the birthday celebration a good one. My wife and her good friend had an enjoyable and memorable birthday celebration. We also want to special mention the 2 Chinese speaking staffs (a Taiwanese lady and a Japanese man who speaks English) for the amazing service, both of them have done more than what a front desk staff would have normally do.

Very convenient that we can book the shuttle bus to and back from hotel for 1000yen per person each way with pick up near tv tower. Walking distance to Jigokudani valley. Shopping street is just opposite hotel. The food for dinner buffet is good with lots of varieties. The onsen area is big and spacious.

The Japanese room for 4 persons is too small. After the beds are spread out, there is not much space for walking. Only have space for 1 luggage outside the toilet area. Not much time to enjoy the area as we stayed only 1 night and shuttle bus only reach hotel at 3pm. Had to leave hotel at 9am+ the next day to catch the shuttle bus back to Sapporo. Will be good if hotel offers an earlier bus from Sapporo.

This hotel is perfectly suited to experience an authentic onsen, located in the middle of volcanic mountains and within walking distance to the famous Hell Valley. The rooms in this ryokan are spacious, the futons very comfortable. The outdoor onsen is surrounded by rocks and lush green woods. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner in buffet style, but only after we decided to pay for the upgrade which was yen 3000,- per person which is absolutely reasonable. We would recommend you to do the same unless you are fine with finding yourself together with large groups of Chinese tourists cramped in a rather loud dining hall and lower quality of food. With the above mentioned upgrade we were perfectly happy - this was the quality we had expected!
