April 2024

It has always been a lifelong dream for me to come to Japan just because of rabbit island, and this onsen ryokan truly exceeded my expectations! I was SO excited to learn that there was a resort hotel on the island and we spent an amazing two nights here with the bunnies. I really can't say enough good things about it. The staff were extremely kind and helpful throughout the whole stay, some of them could speak very good English, the lobby had a really cute cafe and gift shop (which we spent a ton of money at). Free breakfast and dinner buffet were AMAZING - we truly felt like kings and queens and the selection was slightly different for each meal. Each item at the buffet table had allergy indicators and we really appreciated it because my mom is vegan so she couldn't have anything with milk, etc. The food was great. My brother had the curry for every meal because he loved it so much. We got to try so many different foods. And the 2 hot springs were incredible as well - we just picked a time when it wasn't too busy to go so we could fully relax without worrying about others seeing us - since we cannot go in with any clothes on, only the small towel provided at the hotel (we can take those home, according to the hotel staff - only the little colorful towels in plastic bags) The hotel also had activities like the morning walk (which we didn't participate in because we wanted to walk around freely, and it was in Japanese anyway so at the reception when we checked in, they handed us a translated page of the tour in case we wanted to participate) and the sea firefly demonstration (which we did go see; they showed some fireflies in a glass of water and they light up the ocean in the summer months and make the water glow blue). The best part was waking and seeing bunnies hop around the front of the hotel from outside our window...as someone obsessed with rabbits and the owner of 2, I truly wanted to live there.

The only thing that I distinctly remember not loving was how tight the toilet room was - my mom and brother said it reminded them of the toilets on the airplane and shinkansen that we took to arrive at rabbit island - very tight and small and not very spacious. I am short so it didn't bother me as much personally. Also the only bathing option available is the 2 onsen but those are 100% worth experiencing anyway. Outdoor pool was closed when we went late March since it was still cold and it hadn't been cleaned yet.

Just as others have said, this was truly the highlight of my trip to Japan. I felt immersed in the culture in such a real and personal way. The bunnies made us feel like we were walking through a movie set, the peaceful scenery was incredibly inviting, and the buffet food exceeded all expectations—especially for a seafood lover like me! Staying in the traditional Japanese-style accommodations was such a unique experience. It came with a bit of a learning curve—figuring out how to set up the futons, care for the tatami floors, and wear the yukatas (which many locals wore to the buffet)—but it made everything feel that much more special. My only regret? Not staying longer for exploring the beauty of the island... shrines, trails, history. This place definitely deserves a return visit.

I don’t have anything negative to say, but a few tips might be helpful for future guests. While the facilities are a bit dated, the charm of the place lies in how authentically Japanese it feels—far from the typical tourist experience. The shuttle aligns with the ferry schedule, but if you miss it, the walk is actually quite enjoyable. I truly hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did!

Breakfast was good and varied. The location was peaceful and a few things to do. The staff were really helpful and attentive. They were accommodating of my limited Japanese ability. The shop had a variety of souvenirs. The tour is in Japanese at a level I could understand but you had the option to inform if you had only English ability. The island was peaceful and dinner and breakfast included. There was a museum and the options to get around the island on bikes. The hotel was very chilled and the experience of being in a Japanese style room was enjoyable. The view was beautiful and I would definitely stay on the island again and of course seeing all the bunnies was a highlight but I did not expect to see such beautiful views from the viewing platform.

The food choices were good but dinner could have had more choice. The fresh cooked section did not have anyone there to help prepare. The mascot was cute it would have been nice to be able to take one home.

Staff workers were all very polite. The buffet dinner and breakfast were excellent with many choices. Rented electric bicycles from the hotel and rode around the island (they said 30 minutes if you just ride around). We took 2 1/2 hours because we made many stops to feed the rabbits along the way and walked up to the 360 degree viewing point.

We had the Japanese style room and the staff forgot to setup the bedding on the floor even though we indicated during check-in that we would like to have the beds made for us. Once I notified the front reception desk staff, they came right away to make the beds and apologized.

So peaceful. The staff are very kind and helpful. We had an amazing large room with beds on tatami. It was a suite actually, with 2 sitting areas and a private bathroom. The ladies public bath was also very relaxing. Hired the electric assist bikes to ride around the island. As well as the rabbits, the remains of the poison gas factory and museum were very interesting. The food is delicious. A lovely staff member helped us with luggage forwarding. Interesting included activities such as a morning walk and evening session on sea fireflies.

The tennis courts and a few other facilities are a bit run down and not very functional. The ferry timetable sheet would be helpful with an English version.

This is the only hotel/accommodation on the bunny island. If you really like bunnies I strongly suggest staying because they are nocturnal and we saw so many more out roaming in the early mornings (around 7am). By 830 they had mostly dispersed. I imagine the bunnies will also be out at night but due to the presence of boars on the island, we decided against it. The property holds your luggage until your room is ready, so you can go in the morning to drop off your luggage and explore the island. Do note that you cannot purchase bunny food on the island. If you wish to feed the bunnies (and they only come to you for food), you need to purchase it at the little shop where you purchase tickets for the ferry to Ohkunoshima. We rented bikes from the property to explore the island. However, a lot of the main road is winding and you can't really see too far in front of you, and so a lot of the mountainous roads end up being no-bike zones. I loved the little gift shop. I bought a bottle of yuzu/black pepper dressing and have been loving it at home. The man running the shop was extremely kind and meticulous and wrapped the bottle up so nice for the return trip. I never had to worry about it breaking in transit. A public bath is available, but we chose to bathe in our room instead. It had a traditional Japanese style bathroom and my partner and I were able to enjoy bathing with a bathtub that actually comes up high enough to submerge most of the body. We had a room with two western style beds, which also had charging ports on the backboard. It was a great experience.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and one man at the reception especially spoke amazing English. However, I think it may be good to have additional signage for foreigners or to give them additional instructions regarding the tatami region in the dining area. We were told not to wear the slippers into the tatami area but I noticed a foreigner lady wear them into the area. I think this is something that Japanese people may think is obvious but may not be so for others. And it would also help with the longevity for the tatami :)

It's obviously not about the hotel, it's about the island and the rabbits. If you enjoy being in nature and surrounded by animals I highly recommend to stay here! It's a totally different experience walking around the beach and the island after all other tourists are gone. (Bring enough foods for all the rabbits from the mainland!) The stuff are very friendly the hotel where clean. After the sun goes down you will also spot wild boars. But no worries they seem to be very friendly and just searching for left over food in the fields.

We were hoping that the Buffet (Breakfast and Dinner) would offer a bit more vegetarian friendly options. But unfortunately it were only 1-2 options each time. Maybe it is possible to offer a bit vegetarian options in the future. It didn't need much just separate the beef, fish and vegetables a bit more for your international guest. Because I assume the Hotel attracts a lot of animal lovers / vegetarians with the surrounding rabbits.

The rooms were spotless and comfortable and the staff welcoming. The food was plentiful and the amenities varied and easy to find and use. The rabbits were the highlight of course, friendly and gentle. I brought plenty of pellet food and some carrots and cucumber and they went crazy in particular for the fresh vegetables. They would happily jump on you, eat out of your hand, and some of them greatly enjoyed being petted. The surroundings were beautiful, the perfect place to relax and get away from things and de-stress.

Some of the food on the buffet was hit or miss - the karaage for example were clearly left over from an earlier meal. There was enough delicious stuff to have a good meal but you needed to be picky with what you chose.

I had a wonderful stay at Kyukamura Ohkunoshima, a unique hotel located on Japan’s famous “Rabbit Island.” While the hotel is somewhat dated, it has everything necessary for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Rooms & Facilities: The room was clean and functional, offering all the basic amenities needed. Though the decor and furnishings show their age, everything was well-maintained. The beds were comfortable, and the view of the island added to the relaxing atmosphere. Dining Experience: The highlight of the stay was definitely the food! Both dinner and breakfast were exceptional—fresh ingredients, beautifully presented dishes, and a wide selection of local and seasonal flavors. The buffet had an impressive variety, catering to different tastes. If you enjoy Japanese cuisine, you’ll love it here. There was even a live cooking and the grilles skewers where hot and fresh! Service: The staff was extremely professional and accommodating. They spoke perfect English, which made communication effortless, and they were always happy to assist with any questions or requests. Their hospitality truly enhanced the experience. Location & Atmosphere: Being on Ōkunoshima (Rabbit Island), the hotel offers a serene and unique environment. The adorable bunnies are right in front of the hotel, which adds a magical charm to the stay. Feeding and interacting with them was definitely a highlight! Overall: Despite the hotel’s somewhat dated facilities, the great food, excellent service, and the unique island experience more than make up for it. If you’re visiting Ōkunoshima, this is the best accommodation option on the island. I would definitely stay here again! Would recommend for: nature lovers, families, and anyone looking for a relaxing getaway with cute rabbits!

We loved the location, it was so easy to get around the island on foot and on rental bikes! The views from the room out into the beachfront and courtyard full of bunnies was so lovely. There really are tons of bunnies on the island which was amazing! Also the staff were extremely helpful, telling us the best tips for seeing the island and making up the room with futons since we had never done it before! The breakfast and dinner service is so easy for not having to worry about meals and the cafe is open in case you are hungry before dinner! Loved the toasted baguettes. Also, the gift shop has a great collection of souvenirs and some essentials you might need. Finally, it was lovely they offered activities. We loved the nighttime sea fireflies demonstration.
