My wife and I were traveling around the Big Island for 3 weeks in a rental SUV and drove 900 miles on the island, staying in many hotels, from the very best big 5-star to small private guesthouses like this. This property is as close as you can get to the airport - located in a patch of jungle high above the sea and Hilo airport. You can be to the airport in 10 minutes for rental car turn in, which is why we were there for one night. But if we had it to do again, I would have based out of this guesthouse for at least 3 or 4 days and taken car road trips from there to the Kona Coast and south to South Point or even around to the SW coast and up to Volcano NP. You have to drive into Kona to eat, but that is fairly close - 13-15 minutes. As others have said, the rooms are clean, spacious and the two big ones have baloneys facing the jungle. The birds and frogs were singing and croaking all night, and the windows are open (no AC - but very comfortable and cool at night), so you will hear them, and we found it soothing. In the morning the Roosters crow loudly, which no one could possibly like at 4 or 5 AM. But roosters will be roosters. It is a great property to base out of. Oh, and the internet is extremely fast (by far the fastest we have seen in Hawaii) - 700 MB/s! They have nice TVs in the room for streaming your shows. Great place. Of course, it goes without saying that you must be in car to stay here, but that is true for all of the Big Island.

The place is pretty quiet and the nature around the room was good. The balcony was huge and you can sit and listen to the great sounds of birds and at night the sounds of frogs were awesome. The owners allowed us early check in which was great. Overall it is a good value for money.

The area around the property had dogs barking everywhere if you walk outside and unfortunately few of the owners left the dog free outside which led to a very unpleasant incident with my wife. There is nothing great to see around the roads near the property, so please be careful. The dishes were not clean and the pillow covers were not fresh which I changed with fresh ones from the laundry. Laundry: There is a $5 requirement and getting cash was a bit tough as I don't keep cash.

Nanette was so kind and helpful. She went out of her way to help me with a problem that I caused. I accidentally ran through the sliding screen door and messed it up while trying to quickly answer the knocking on my door. I was on the lanai and she (Nanette) was coming by to greet me and welcome me. Anyway, she measured the door, went to several places to find a door that would fit. I loved the coolness at night at the 1,620 feet or so of elevation that Bear’s Placeis located. It is in a convenient location to many of the best beaches and other entertainment venues. It is also close to the airport and Kona. The parking lot was easy in- easy out! The instructions that were given were perfect. There is so much privacy here. I know there were others who stayed here while I did but I never saw anyone. The lanai was huge and comfortable. Also having beach chairs and cooler to put a sandwich and drinks in came in really helpful!! I didn’t know they even had beach towels as well, so I bought one. If you can’t relax here then you can’t relax anywhere! I loved the sounds of nature also! You don’t need AC with the cross wind and ceiling fan.

I wish that the kitchen area had a sink. The neighbor’s dog barking sometimes was annoying. This didn’t happen very often though.

Bear's Place Guest House was our home for 5 days and it was the perfect place to start our island stay. We spent much time on our studio's private lanai, which is surrounded by lush green plant life, and was often visited by geckos and butterflies. The coqui frogs are abundant and their nighttime songs were a perfect lullaby each night. Everything was clean and simple. The onsite laundry was a great bonus, and the location was great for us. The other guests who stayed during the same period of time were quiet and really friendly.

The road leading to the location can be a little tricky when oncoming traffic is also on the road, but we considered it part of our adventure.

Checking in was super easy, even after-hours. We were close to many stores and things to do, but still felt like we were secluded. The sounds of the frogs at night was magical.

We were in the triple room, and from the pictures, I thought we would have a large balcony. Maybe I missed something, but I would have definitely paid more for that if it had been more apparent when choosing rooms. All in all, cheap! So I shouldn't complain.

Room was huge! Large lanai with lots of seating. Closely posted instructions and super easy check in and check out.

The only sink was in the bathroom and washing dishes takes place in the laundry room. Was strange but not inconvenient. Walls are thin and the man next to us was screaming into his phone from 3am-6:30am, completely disrespecting quiet hours. NOT the property owners fault. Just a heads up that your neighbors can hear you.

Views, clean, very good condition and friendly note on entry from the management. Excellent coffee sample.

No kitchenette sink-only water in the unit is the bathroom sink. No sheets or pillowcases for the folding bed in the living room (not the most comfortable couch-bed either). Proving dish soap would be a nice improvement. On the whole an excellent property nonetheless.

We stayed in the "Ginger" room. There was a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, hot water maker. Teas, coffee, creamer, and sugar provided. Foldup beach chairs were in the room that we used at the local beaches. Queen bed was comfortable. The ceiling fan provided some air movement. There is a big screen TV with Roku provided. We watched "Paul Blart - Mall Cop 2" for free. Easy access to a nice laundry room with washer, dryer, extra towels, etc...

No air conditioner or dehumidifier, and so the room was warm and muggy at times. Bathroom sink drains very slowly. The owner said they would fix that.

Stayed in Orchid suite. Great lanai with tropical garden and vast distant view of ocean. Well equipped kitchen. Easy access from airport.

The coqui treefrogs croak loud all night and roosters get up early. If you're sensitive to this, then the location is probably not for you.

We received excellent, easy to follow, instructions for finding the property before we landed on the island. We actually stayed here twice, at the beginning and end of our stay on the island. It was very quiet, apart from a lot of bird song in the evening and morning. There was plenty of parking and each space was well defined. We only met the owners for a few minutes so can't comment.
