Food provided for both dinner and breakfast was simply fantastic. A full course Kaiseki meal that you can't forget and a relaxing onsen for the night. The hotel is located along Lake Chuzenji giving you a great view of the lake and nature. It is also next to the bus stop and ferry terminal, making it easy to get around and come back. The hospitality shown by the staff was simply amazing and gracious. Looking forward to coming back to this hotel if I ever return to Nikko. Simply fantastic!

Nothing at all!

Friendly, great staff - always willing to help and to go extra mile. Had dinner and breakfast catered and was glad i did. Very little food options around in off-season. Very appreciative that staff also prepared additional special dishes not in dinner menu. Food was delicious and better than the ones at more expensive ryokan. Location was a little off Nikko city but great if you are planning to visit the Senjogahara area Will stay again if I'm travelling to Nikko area.

Very minor points only because I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Decor is a little dated and outdoor hot spring was a little too hot for me to use.

We arrived right on the cusp of the set dinner time. Kamio-san (manager) and staff were waiting outside the entrance to spot us getting off the #28 bus stop near opposite. They carried our bags to our room and ushered us into the superb multi dish Japanese “degustation” dinner…. Warm double glazed rooms (snowing outside) - very comfortable beds - ryokan style yukatas . We woke to the exceptional lake view ringed by snow capped mountains - incredibly helpful staff - lifts were offered to Kegone Falls (it was raining) - breakfast had full western and japanese food choices - evening meals were outstanding - DO pay for their full meal package! After a big day walking the trails and wonderful heritage sites of Nikko, return to another multi course feast and a soak in the deep sulphur infused onsen….(And do buy the Tobu Nikko 4 day pass - much cheaper than paying individual trips) A wonderful time.

The ONLY thing I could suggest to Hatago Nagomi would be to consider some warmer lighting in the dining room - the white fluorescent lamps are a bit stark 😉 But this doesn’t stop me from giving a 10. We really had a lovely time here.

Lovely welcoming and helpful staff Great location for many beautiful walks in Nikko Fantastic breakfast buffet (the best we had in Japan) and dinner They accommodated my vegetarian diet Large room and good power shower Useful drinks vending machines in the lobby

Only two meal serving times at breakfast and dinner - seemed quite restrictive (e.g. if you want to head out early for a big hike).

Great room, everything clean, good breakfast selection, beautiful view, lovely onsen, very kind staff. Really happy with the hotel itself, also has restaurants and supermarket etc all close by.

The location, while beautiful, is a bit inconveniently located overall, you have to take a bus that goes a long serpentine road up the mountain. If you can't stomach that you shouldn't visit this area.

A quaint, charming mountain lodge run by a wonderful staff that’s dedicated, professional and welcoming. Cozy loungewear provided, onsen on the second floor. Food prep, presentation and service is exceptional. The hotel is in need of updating but that is part of its charm. Located directly across from lake with rental boats and a tour boat that runs regularly and stops a few places where passengers can follow walking paths to waterfalls. Busses run from Nikko town center making it easily accessible and well worth an overnight stay.

The hotel could use updating.

Great view of the lake from our 4th floor window with a sofa facing outside. Good food and staff. They spoke enough English and always had a smile. The parking is a little tight but we parked in the back on a much less busy street. Walked along the lake and to kegon falls.

No elevator so had to go up and down stairs a lot. Beware if have big suitcases-we only had small bags and left the suitcases in the car. Second floor less stairs and had balcony view but lower down.

I am fortunate to have visited Japan many times and I've stayed at many ryokan. This one really is OUTSTANDING. I'm so lucky I booked 3 nights. The outstanding hospitality from the multinational staff is evident from the warm welcome as soon as you come through the door from Kamio-san jnr.I would like to say thank you very much to each and every member of the staff. What a wonderful team! They were welcoming, kind, helpful and thoughtful. Thank you Kamio-san, Dilakshi,Diane,Sandani, Diru and Nway.Im sorry I don't know the name of the chef. Location: An excellent location right at bus stop number 28 for buses from central Nikko and to Yumoto onsen. Opposite the cruise terminal. I highly recommend the cruise. It has excellent commentary in English as well as Japanese.Futarasan shrine and Kegon Falls are within easy walking distance. Rooms: Very large and in extremely good condition.Clean carpet.Very comfortable beds and pillows with nice bedding. My room 202 was on the 2nd floor, up only one flight of stairs. NO LIFT. There was a lake view but there was a flat roof in the foreground.I think I would prefer room 205.Ask for help to learn how to open the double sliding doors onto the patio. I enjoyed sitting on the sofa enjoying some lemon cheesecake and match cream with coffee one afternoon (very reasonably priced). Individual air conditioning units. Onsen: The ladies onsen is small, as I already knew. I enjoyed the inside one but the outside one was too hot for me. Meals: I'm glad I booked dinner and breakfast.I enjoyed the beautifully presented multicourse dinners. The buffet breakfast I thought was excellent. It included danishes with spinach and fetta and red bean I have never seen elsewhere. My visit was 20 to 23 June. Okunikko is absolutely stunningly beautiful in summer green. I am including a photo of an excellent brochure about the walks in Okunikko I obtained at the Tobu office in Asakusa. I also recommend the eco bus from Okanuma.

Nothing. I understand a price rise in autumn season but 60,000 yen plus is double what I paid in June.

Location, the staff, the service were very good. It’s a family run business with about 15 rooms. The food is superb, and in 4 almost Keiseki style dinners, we never had a repetition. There are many wonderful nature sights and hikes in the national park, all easily accessible by bus from the hotel, and a very interesting history of the Meiji-era opening up of the area to foreigners (mostly diplomats) by a British Japanophile. Plan at least 3 full days there to enjoy what the area offers. The hotel and lake sit at 1200m, the sights are higher, so it will be cooler than Tokyo.

While the rooms, all with lake view, and lobby area are in good shape, the rest is a little less so. The onsen was not up to the same standards we had experienced at other ryokans, and not because of its necessarily smaller size. But it was functional. The natural outer onsen is a sulphur spring common in the area. But we paid for four nights what one would pay for the new ritzy (pun intended) hotel down the road for one, and the view and food cannot be better there.

We loved the staff here! They were so friendly and helpful. We arrived pretty tired towards the end of a long journey and the staff were so kind. Kamio especially stood out as a friendly staff member who gave us excellent recommendations for day trips in the area and helped us find a relaxing onsen to visit. We speak a little Japanese and staff were happy to chat with us in either English or Japanese. We also loved the food. They had delicious traditional Japanese set meals with enough variety that even our kids were happy. If you're unsure about some of the traditional food, there are plenty of different things to eat. It's a nice balance between traditional ryokan and western-style hotel.

Nothing! We loved this place.
