We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Senhime Monogatari. The staff members were friendly and helpful. They provided wonderful service and advice regarding our activities in Nikkō. We chose a traditional Japanese room and loved the space and view of the mountainside and stream. It was very peaceful. We slept well on the futons and relaxed in the yukatas provided by the hotel. The location is fantastic as it’s an easy walk to the shrines. We took advantage of the Nikko pass to take the bus to Kegon Falls and the lake area. Very easy to do. Bus stop is a two minute walk from the hotel. The hotel shuttle to/from the train station is a plus, as well. If you are looking for a place to stay in Nikko, I’d definitely recommend this hotel.
The bar was only open for limited hours. It would have been nice to enjoy a cocktail before dinner. But in general, this was not a big deal.

- Beautifully maintained premises. On the older side but one of the best maintained and cleaned places I stayed in my many many hotel stays in Japan (including much newer places). - Staff incredibly attentive and friendly. Good English proficiency and will go the extra mile to help. - Lawson short walking distance. - Free parking available if driving. - Bed comfortable and the rooms were large. - Amenities and service, little details such as filling an insulated jug with ice and water each day. - Free shuttle provided to and from Nikko station (do not need to book). - Onsen was wonderful with many baths, spa and sauna. - Free yukata rental where you are able to choose your own design.
- A bit further from the main strip and station (however, a shuttle is provided to and from Nikko station that you do not need to book and about a 30 min walk if able). Nikko is easiest explored via car but do-able with buses with stops near by.

My wife, daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this conveniently located ryokan that was right by the gorgeous Daiya River. We had a beautiful view of the forested mountains. The half-board (dinner and breakfast) was served in a semi-private room and was a delicious treat. We enjoyed being provided yukatas to wear to our meals and to the onsen hot pools (separate male and female hot spring baths). The free shuttle from and to the train station was perfect, provided by a very friendly driver. This hotel was walking distance along the gorgeous river to the Shinkyo (sacred bridge) and the remarkable shrines located in the nearby cedar forest.
We felt like we were special guests throughout this experience. We liked everything! The only thing I would suggest is to make sure you provide information about any dietary restrictions and any other information when booking, ahead of time as it was difficult to get in touch with the hotel on-line, and we had to call them regarding some information by using my daughter's while phone in Japan.

Wonderful traditional style Japanese room. Great spa with indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel. It was served in the traditional Japanese style. The food was amazing and not what we found in many of the Japanese restaurants. Also had in-room massages which were very relaxing. The Hotel is a short walk to the temple, complex sites and the 70 Buddhas along the river.
They are extremely strict on the 3 o’clock check-in. We asked for early check-in which they couldn’t do it. We got there, dropped off our bags and went out sightseeing. We got back at 2:45 and they still made us wait till 3 PM.

The quaint old ryokan but in a hotel setting. Across from the UNESCO Heritage site. Nearby Lawson (5min walk) bus stops. A clean inhouse onsen & bath.
They try to be perfect on timing, but cant get the tatami rolling out on time. But the shuttle to the station runs on time. Tat was my annoyance. Asked for the dining add on upon check in. They refused to allow as we didn’t choose the package. Seems robotic that they cant make adjustments or add more sales by the add ons. Like if we said 4 ppl and we came and ask for 2nd helping, they would turn us away. A very rigid hospitality. Dry with no warm hospitality. I would expect it in Tokyo but in Nikko..hmm

We enjoyed our stay at this traditional Japanese inn. We were looking for a place with tatami rooms and futons to sleep on and we found it here. The view from the room of the river and hills was very nice. The traditional Japanese bathroom with tub and sit down shower were exactly what we were looking for. The onsite onsen was just what we wanted as well. We were happy there was a convenience store very close nearby!
We would have liked to have the option to eat dinner/breakfast at the hotel but they said our reservation wouldn't allow it and that we couldn't purchase it on site. We're not sure if they were sold out or there was some other reason. There aren't many other evening dinner options nearby but enough to make do. We enjoyed sleeping on futons but wished they were a little thicker. However, there were more in the closet so we just stacked those on top of what they set up for us.

Meal was great, baths were nice- the shared ones overlook a fenced in courtyard with trees. Room was very roomy. Staff was extremely attentive.
I paid extra for a private bath just to try the option & because I wanted a mountain view while bathing. It took a while to fill up and was a bit complicated. Not bad really, just an fyi I wish I'd known in advance. Was NOT a fan of how exposed the view from the private bath felt- while in the bath was fine, getting out/into it felt like it was to easy to see, and be seen from nearby road + carpark. (Solved with towels, but still.) Also be advised, sun does not really hit mountains you can see from the bath in winter at dawn. Staff was really really attentive to the point it was a little uncomfortable - I appreciate they were on top of it, but please give me a min to find my stuff + felt more than a bit rushed at a few points. Maybe just me.

A lovely hotel in an amazing location close to nature and bus stops to visit the local attractions. The free shuttle bus was really useful for getting to and from the train station. The room was amazing, so much larger than we expected and very comfortable. We paid for the extra dinner service and cannot believe how much was prepared. All of it beautifully presented and explained. There was often too much to eat (especially for breakfast) but it was a real treat. The staff were extremely helpful, giving us a lot of advice on the area and even a shoe-dryer after we got caught in a downpour. The staff at the gift shop were great and helped us send our luggage on to the next hotel. All in all one of the nicest stays of our trip. I just wish I'd had the courage to try the onsen. Maybe next time?

A magnificent ryokan ideally located just a stone’s throw from Nikko Toshogu. The staff is incredibly attentive, providing impeccable service. The room was spacious, comfortable, and peaceful, and the baths offered an exceptionally relaxing experience. A special mention for the Japanese gourmet meal – absolutely exquisite! A true culinary experience that alone makes the stay worthwhile.
The price may seem a bit high at first, but considering the exceptional quality of the included meal, it is more than justified.

Very warm welcome with a snack. Clean and peaceful place. Convenient to have the shuttle bus from the station but be mindful of the bus schedule. Onsen and facilities were very nice. Dinner and breakfast were good and convenient to eat at the accom. Special thanks to the gentleman staff member whose name starts with H (sorry forgot his name). He was very friendly and funny and spoke good English. Not all the staff speak English but Google translate is adequate
Bit expensive.
