Clean, very comfy room. Shared bathroom was spotless, with enough room for all guests and excellent privacy. Incredibly helpful, gracious, friendly staff. Very quiet at night. Perfect location for me. I felt genuinely welcome, the other guests were great fun, and the locals came by to enjoy a casual evening in the lobby to share stories. note: I have a severe spinal injury and sleeping can be difficult. The futon on the tatami was incredibly comfy!!! I slept so well!

Honestly nothing. This is not a luxury 5-star resort. It's a guesthouse, and that is what I was hoping for. Yet Guesthouse Soi exceeded my expectations in every way.

Guesthouse Soi was a lovely home away from home. We do not generally book hostels, but decided to as it was so well reviewed - and now we understand why. The staff (esp Maki and Miyochi) are so kind and helpful, the hospitality is warm, and the hostel has everything you could want. The shared bathrooms and toilets were spotless. The rooms are very generous in size (double of most our rooms in Japan) with a sitting area. And pretty close to a major bus route. Absolutely order the Japanese breakfast - best grilled fish ever! We totally enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this Guesthouse Soi! 💯

Nothing! It was perfect!

The owners have a lot of experience in running a hostel (they owned one previously in China) and it shows - the place is spotlessly clean, they give good advice/recommendations about things around town, and there are lots of nice touches like free snacks/amenities in the lobby. It's also just a very comfortable, welcoming space, with a sociable eating/hanging out area downstairs.

The included breakfast is pretty basic - just fruit and toast (but honestly, for this price, in Kyoto, I was not expecting much more). It is a bit outside of the center of things, which can be good, because it's quieter, but if you're walking all day (and in Kyoto, you will be!), adding the 15-20 minutes from the nearest train station to your daily trek might be more than you're interested in doing at the start and finish of the day. There's also not really much in the way of food/shops nearby.

Genuinely kind and helpful owners and staff. They went out of their way to engage with us, make us comfortable and ensure we had some good plans for each day. They took particular care of our 9 year old son and were so lovely with him. They provided a daily free breakfast which was very filling with plenty of options like fruit, toast and yoghurt. Tea and coffee and cold water station available all day. Easy to catch local buses just down the road and and get to kyoto train station. Lovely little meandering pathways off the main road worth exploring also. Close to a fantastic Kyoto ceramic shop and shrines and temples. Also close to museum. Staff happy to call for an uber if you would like that option. They have bikes for your use and also umbrellas. We stayed in the private quad bunk room, which was convenient, comfortable and quiet. Aircon and a powerful fan in the room. Our son was particularly excited about the nintendo wii games in the main area!

My partner and I really enjoyed our stay at Guesthouse Soi. We appreciated the ample morning breakfast (fruits, yogurt, toast, milk, tea, coffee, snacks) and hospitality of our hosts and the front desk - they provided good tips on getting around Kyoto. We were able to rent bikes from them, and biking around Kyoto was a highlight of the trip! Our room was a private twin, Japanese-styled suite - we had lots of space to relax and spread out, and the futon/bedding was thick and comfortable. Overall, the guesthouse and bathrooms were clean and relatively quiet. The location is great for exploring Kyoto, and there are nearby bus stops with access to many local buses. Wifi works well. We would be happy to stay at Guesthouse Soi during our next visit to Kyoto.

No complaints. My only consideration is that Guesthouse Soi is at the top of a large hill. If you have many or large luggages, it may be a challenging walk.

From the moment I walked through the door I felt like I was home. The owners and employees are some of the most charismatic and charming people I have met on my journey so far. They are so kind, that when I arrived early before check in they offered to share their lunch with me. The room was spacious by Japan standards and well appointed. Free breakfast was delicious and plentiful. The location was a short walk to a few beautiful temples, and a cheap cab ride to just about anywhere else. I truly enjoyed my time here and will be returning next year in the fall season.

It’s a truly minor gripe, but I wish their smoking area was away from the side windows. I walked out of my room only to be blasted by the noxious smell of cigarettes. Now, this isn’t entirely on them and more on disrespectful smokers puffing away next to three massive screen doors.

I didn't expect any free snacks with fruits, yogurt and sandwich. I was surprised and happy to know when I was told I could eat anything I want they placed at the counter. It was very helpful especially when I was tired going there.

It's not that I didn't like it, but probably the ladder going to the upper bed was a bit challenging. Anyone can fall if they're not being careful. Additionally, the staff forgot to offer and let me know that there were slippers that I could use. It was no big deal for me though because she seemed friendly and was accommodating. Lastly, the road going to the location was a bit steep.

They posted relevant and changing things on a notice board, eg. a light show that was on for winter, a sale on clothing brand, a market. Everything a traveller and tourist might want! Breakfast was so nice, opportunity to have real coffee and fresh fruit and yoghurt. Every touch was great, like there's washing machines and places to hang clothes up on the roof. Always water and tea available to take, and nice areas to socialise and read if you want to, including travel books and novels in English, Japanese, and a few other languages. Our private room with ensuite was modern and clean. Maki our host was amazing, she and Sim seem like really interesting people. By chance realised I had stayed in one of their previous guesthouses in Chengdu, same peaceful and friendly vibes. Great beer and sake bar down the street called the Windmill, he had great music, and local recommendations for food also. Is clearly a guesthouse for made by travellers, for travellers. Best place we stayed out of 6 in Japan.

Loved the staff, very friendly and kind. They helped us with information and tips for watching the festival. Breakfast was delicious, the complimentary breakfast was fresh fruit and toast, yogurt, coffee, milk, and OJ. The bathroom and beds were clean and comfortable.

Location was very quiet, which was lovely, however it made it harder to get to the main area with a young child. Walking took us about 45 minutes to get to the market or near the station. We ended up taking taxis or a bus the last few days due to heat.

The breakfast was simple, but very nice and with plenty on offer. The room (we stayed in a double room) was exquisite, with a traditional mezzanine relaxation area that was very cosy, and a very comfortable bed. The property is very quiet, and in a calm neighbourhood. The staff are incredibly warm and welcoming, and ready to help with anything. Bike rental for 600 yen per day is incredibly good value. Nearby supermarket. Tea, coffee and sweets available at all times.

Noting - it's excellent!
