It's a unique accommodation of what used to be an old Japanese house in old interior decoration with modern amenities . Room is very spacious with the loft bedroom . Own backyard garden is a nice touch. Boyd the staff is very helpful and gave us great recommendations where to eat.

The property is a little tricky to find by yourself because it may not appear on navigation apps. The hotel can send guest a detailed map and how to get to the hotel. Some bigger cars can't get in the narrow street so you might need to get off and take a 5 minute walk with your luggages in a street with a slope.

This was our favourite hotel for our Japan trip - felt really authentic and genuine and the price was reasonable. The service couldn’t have been better and staff more helpful - though the reception wasn’t manned 24/7, messages on the app were responded to really quickly even before the trip. The room was spacious with a separate downstairs area so felt a bit like a mini apartment. Location is great, easy to get to Gion area by foot but not so central that you’re surrounded by crowds all the time.

It’s not a dislike at all but as it is traditional, the walls were quite thin so you could hear murmurings sometimes of people next door. Wouldn’t put off booking based on this, more of an FYI for guests to be respectful for others

Ryokan is a unique experience in it self. We also had the opportunity to experience sleeping in futons.

The pillow provided with the futon could have been more comfortable (they were too thin in our opinion). Unfortunately, I got an allergic reaction from staying in this hotel. The following is small knit picking that you can ignore: The location could have been better but simultaneously this ryokan has one of the, if not the best, location on the market. You can take this ryokan to another level by having a private onsen

Very nice and helpful staff, especially Boyd, property has a lot of character with a lovely private garden, good beds, location is convenient for public transport and Kiyomizu Dera

The beds are on the first floor, bathroom and sitting room are downstairs, so not ideal if you have to go to the toilet a lot at night. There is a Buddhist temple just across the small road and the monks are woken up by a VERY loud gong between 05:30 and 6am. Having said that the character of the place makes up for these inconveniences and we would stay here again if we should come back to Kyoto.,

We loved the traditional vibes of the property. Everything was clean and very well equipped. The staff were amazing - very welcoming and helpful! Great location too - walking distance to many temples and other attractions. Highly recommend.

Amazing traditional ryokan experience. We had a mesonet type of room with a separate living room and bathroom on the first floor and a sleeping area with futons on the second floor. We got a view of the small courtyard and we were provided with yukatas to wear at the accommodation. The bathroom is small but it was enough for us and I don´t think there are much bigger ones in other hotels either. Really close by you can find combini stores, ceramics shops, and a lovely temple. It´s within walking distance of Kiyomizidera temple or Yasaka shrine. Everybody was very nice and helpful there, we didn´t want to leave such a lovely place. It´s more suited for people who like peace and quite and looking for traditional experience.

We booked western style hotels during most of our trip to Japan, but wanted to spend a couple nights in a more traditional looking, Japanese ryokan style hotel. We booked the Twin Room with Garden View Momiji. When you first walk in to the room, there's an entry way where you take your shoes off (no shoes allowed in the room so as to not damage the floors). The room itself actually has two floors! On the first floor there's a living room with a small TV, a coffee table, and two chairs. There's an AC unit that is strong and kept the room very cool. There's sliding doors that open to a little patio overlooking a small garden. There's a mini fridge in the patio area. There's a small bathroom with a shower/bathtub, sink, and toilet/bidet. There was cold and hot water in the shower and the water pressure was good. There are stairs to go up to the bedroom. There are two western style double beds up there! The beds were very comfortable. There's another AC unit in the bedroom too. The wifi signal was excellent throughout both floors. Overall, we really liked the way the room looked. The floors, walls, doors, table and chairs, all looked like a Japanese ryokan so it was pretty nice! The location is good too, it's walking distance to temples, shrines, and markets, and the bus stop is right down the hill. Also, huge shout out to the front desk worker, Boyd! He's American and a Japanese resident, he speaks English and Japanese. He gave us tons of amazing tips on where to eat, things to do, and he helped us figure out new travel plans when an approaching typhoon disrupted the train service. Thank you Boyd!!

Minor things: The hotel is up a hill, but it's not too far up, just something to consider if you have a lot of luggage (we were fine with our one carry on suitcase and backpack). The nearby temple rings it's bells loudly every morning at 5am and again at 6am. I wore ear plugs the second night and slept through it. There was a slight smell when we first walked in, potentially due to the wooden floors or walls or something but we didn't notice the smell after a while. There isn't turn over service, but we were fine with just asking for new towels every day. I'm sensitive to LED lights when I sleep at night and there were lights from the AC, fire alarm, and stairway in the bedroom.

I liked how spacious this place was and how it had the traditional Japanese style house. It was a peaceful place and not too far from restaurants and taxi and other stores. Boyd was an amazing, helpful bonus. He truly went above and beyond while there to help us get around find things to do and make sure we were taken care of. He is truly a great guy with so much information and helped us in a number of ways. Great supply of hair and face products to use. Even though due to this being a small hotel and sometimes someone wasn’t there to help us I was able to email and the guy on duty responded and took care of my luggage needs quickly. You have an amazing staff!!!!

Microwave was not working the best.

We loved the traditional elements of the property, with tatami mats and a private garden. The location was exceptional on a quiet street in a rather busy area but you didn’t hear any traffic at all. The staff were also very kind and hospitable and always asked if we needed anything, and even lent us some umbrellas as it was raining quite heavily for the few days we were there.

There is no private parking for guests arriving by car and the nearest parking lot was approx ¥25,000 (approx $250 AUD) for 24 hours. However, noting this, most guests seemed to arrive by train or bus so just something to consider for those arriving by car.

This was such a charming place to stay, with great access to various bus lines. Our room was two-stories, with a lovely traditional sitting area, full bathroom downstairs, and access to a private garden. Upstairs held the bedroom with Western style beds. Both upstairs and downstairs had tatami floors, and they provided slippers and yukata to wear. It had old-world charm, and my husband and I loved it. We were 10 minutes from the Gion bus stop, 15 minutes from Nishiki Market, and so close to many great shrines and temples. Would definitely stay here again.

The only challenge was that the bathroom was downstairs, but a small price to pay for such a great spot.
