We love the room with the private stone garden and view of the exterior garden. The room was beautiful. Great way to experience staying in a Ryokan. The breakfast was also a fantastic way to experience Japanese culture. We asked for no pork and no alcohol meal and they easily accomodate that. There was also Yukata and slippers that we could use and walk around the premises. The bathroom even had facial products for men as well as women. Apart from the hairdryer, there was also an electric hairbrush. It is also closed to Philosopher's Path and you can walk along it that leads to Gingkakuji Temple.

The only negative thing was the location. There is no subway but only buses. So you can't travel on the bus with big suitcases.

The room with the garden view was absolutely amazing. The bathroom felt luxurious and the rooftop bath that you could book as extra was well worth the small additional fee. This was a perfect place to rest after running around in Tokyo for a week.

I both liked and didn't like the location since, yes it was perfect for a restful stay, but I also wanted to sightsee Kyoto and for those locations that I wanted to see it was difficult to navigate from the ryokan without a taxi. (Then again I think Kyoto in general is kinda hard to navigate without a taxi.)

My girlfriend and I stayed at Kanade in September 2024. The ryokan offers a beautiful interior and room, as well as a convenient location (there are two bus stops nearby, allowing easy access to anywhere in Kyoto). The room also has a great view of the garden. We ordered breakfast at the hotel as well. Despite some issues in scheduling breakfast for us, thanks to the excellent and well-coordinated work of the staff and chefs, we were able to enjoy a wonderful breakfast that same morning. The beds are very comfortable, and there’s a lovely yukata set for two in the room. We liked everything and would be happy to stay again. Special thanks to the hotel staff who worked hard to make our stay comfortable and resolved any minor issues as quickly as possible.

Opening the balcony window requires quite a bit of effort. The Wi-Fi was occasionally slow. I didn’t encounter any other issues.

The food was amazing! Breakfast and dinner were included, and the portions were so generous we actually felt a bit guilty not being able to finish everything at times. We were there for a 50th birthday celebration, and although my husband has a bad back, the staff were incredibly accommodating. They kindly arranged for a dining chair to be placed in our room so he could sit comfortably to put on his socks and relax. The thoughtful service made a big difference to our stay. Highly recommend

The only downside is that if you have mobility issues, a traditional-style stay may not be the most comfortable option. Also, the location is a little out of the way but we ended up discovering a lovely little café just around the corner, which served great coffee and made our mornings extra enjoyable.

This is a very lovely ryokan, which fulfilled all expectations. We were welcomed by a very friendly receptionist and the check-in went fast and all was clear. Also additional services were explained, which we gladly signed up for. The room ticked all check-boxes. My biggest fear was that the futons may be a problem, but those were actually more like mattresses. For me that was a big plus. The bathroom is a combination of modern and the old - we loved it. And the view from the room - spectacular, to the lovely garden. In the room also waited for each us, a yukata and a pair of zori. We also tried the traditional breakfast and booked a dinner. Both were served by the same chef, and what can I say? Different, but interesting and very delicious. We felt there very welcomed and enjoyed the ryokan and walking to the near by sights. There's a bus stop 5min away, which we used to travel to other parts of the city.

All was great, we have no complaints. Maybe just a note. It's a bit brighter in the room, because understandably there are no blackout curtains. So please bring a sleeping mask, if you have issues sleeping in brightness.

My wife and I had an incredible experience that truly captured the essence of traditional Japanese hospitality. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt peaceful and authentic, and the staff made us feel welcome and well looked after. Our room was spacious and beautifully designed in traditional Japanese style, complete with tatami flooring and sliding doors. The highlight for us was the view over the serene Japanese garden, which added a sense of calm and beauty to our stay. Waking up to that view every morning was magical. The ryokan also provided yukata and flip-flops for guests, which added to the traditional experience. It was such a nice touch to be able to wear the yukata around the ryokan, enhancing the sense of immersion in Japanese culture. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the kaiseki dinner by the Grand Chef Kazuyoshi Terada —an exquisite multi-course meal that left us with lasting memories. The chef was not only talented but also passionate about his craft. His enthusiasm for local ingredients and his collaboration with local ceramic artists added a personal touch that made the dining experience even more special. The food itself was exceptional—carefully curated, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious (the same goes for the traditional Japanese breakfast). There is a lovely outdoor rooftop bath, which is great especially after a long day of exploring the city as it stays open until late. This is ideal for unwinding and relaxing in the warm water while taking in the night sky—a perfect way to end the day. Overall, Ryokan Kanade offered us an unforgettable stay. From the tranquil atmosphere and beautiful room to the exceptional dining and thoughtful touches, we felt completely at ease and looked after throughout our stay. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic and relaxing experience in Kyoto and would definitely stay here again in the future.

The ryokan was fenomenal, the rooms were large and we loved sleeping on the futon, at first we were a little scared but it was super comfortable! We miss it already. The location was good, not in the city center (easily reachable by bus), but near the wonderful Rohm Theatre and a fabulous old tamale, both within 5 minutes walk. Last but not least, the restroom, was at least 9 meters squared, with a beautiful room just for bath and shower.

the traditional breakfast was good, but we were not ready to eat that kind of food first in the morning. If you are not used to it, but you want to try anyway, I suggest to book a late breakfast

We loved the quiet neighborhood (out of the typical tourist tracks yet very well connected and central ), the ryokan's cute garden, the hot baths on the rooftop (paid extra), and the sizable bath & shower room in our traditional bedroom. We also appreciated the staff's availability to satisfy our requests, such as booking via phone a restaurant where only Japanese was spoken, or lending us an ironing board.

There was a lot of dust in our room. We also found several items of the room to be damaged or broken, like the mosquito net (which made it less useful, as insects could enter through its holes), the air purifier (of which the front panel kept falling when in use), or the cracked washbasin. The ryokan has the beauty of age and that's one of the things we liked the most, but it'd be important to ensure that basic facilities are kept up to date and in a good state.

I wanted to book a Ryokan for our visit to Japan, for all of the good things I had read about these establishments and it totally delivered. Highlights of this place: the tatami floor and the room we booked was great for our family of 3 - we had a crawling baby with us. Nice views to the mountain and the zen garden on the back of the property, I've appreciated the calmness of the surroundings of this property. There are a few good restaurants around it as well, and plentiful options for small hikes, temples and shrines to visit - all within walking distance. The restaurant experience was good for a 1 time, but with so many great options around it as well we preferred eating out most of the time.

1. It was very quiet and featured a beautiful garden. I found it very zen to walk around the garden in the late afternoon and evening after the lights came on. 2. The staff's service was very good, and every employee was accommodating and patient. 3. The location was not central to Gion, but I did not find myself having a hard time finding places to eat before 9 PM. On the contrary, the attractions I visited near this area were the best I rated, e.g., Okazaki Temple, Heian Jingu Shrine, Philosopher's Path shrines like Eikando Temple and Nanzenji Temple. I visited an excellent and better-priced eel place about 15 min from KANADE, and nobody else was there. (As opposed to another place in Gion.) KANADE is <5 min walk from several important bus stops like Okazaki Jinja-mae and Okazaki Hosshojicho. 4. The room was very spacious. The bathroom is HUGE and boasts excellent amenities. Skincare products, hair electronic gadgets, daily disposable items, etc. 5. The elevator was very quick all the time. 6. The futon is thick, the blanket/duvet very warm, and I enjoyed not having to unfold the futon myself every day. Overall, as this was my 1st ryokan and 1st time in Kyoto, I was very impressed with KANADE.

1. I did not love the rooftop spa. I was looking forward to this the most, but it was a subpar experience. Deducted -1 point from the overall score for this. There was a button ripped out from the walls of the jacuzzi; there were no special herbs or soap mixed into it like the other ryokan I stayed at, and the water was not 100% pristine. The changing room was nice, though, and you can shower right outside next to the jacuzzi before you get in. Naturally, beware that if it rains, the spa will be closed for the day. (This almost happened to us.)
