The staff were so friendly and helpful. The building itself was gorgeous, inside and out, and it was a really cool experience to stay in a more traditional inn! The manager did a tea ceremony for us the morning we were leaving, too! I highly recommend trying the private onsen bath as well, it was really relaxing and a perfect balm for our muscles after a lot of walking and sightseeing.

There was only one toilet, which was a bit inconvenient on the day we were checking out because people were using the area for getting ready (blow-drying/straightening their hair etc). There are two other sinks in the room with the private bath I was able to use to wash up, but we had to wait a long time to use the toilet.

A truly special place with beautiful traditional charm. Hisa-san's and Gen-san's warm hospitality made us feel very welcome and well cared for. The little private onsen is nice, and the famous onsens of Matsuyama are within walking distance, and we got great recommendations for restaurants nearby. We enjoyed our stay here very much.

Dougoya is surrounded by large hotels with noisy ventilation systems running through the night, but honestly, our experience at this place was so lovely, one could overlook that fact.

The room was traditional, spacious, and beautiful, with typical shoji doors and gorgeous, peacock-design fusuma doors! The futon were thick and very comfortable. There were several electrical outlets. Aircon worked well (for both cool and hot air). The ryokan was within easy walking distance (5-10min) of the Dogo Onsen complex, and the cute traditional downtown with shopping and restaurants.

There wasn't anything I didn't like. Noise carries pretty easily in the building. We could hear our neighbors laughing sometimes, but it didn't bother us. We didn't use their onsen due to the timing of our scheduled activities, so I cannot comment on it. We also didn't eat at Dougoya, so I cannot comment on their food.

Beautiful ryokan with a manicured garden and a cosy private hot bath . We had a spacious Japanese style room with very good amenities, including yokata, kotatsu, etc. Excellent location close to tourist attractions, especially Dogo Onsen. The host Hisa is very warm, friendly and attentive. He truly represents the exquisite and refined Japanese culture. He performed a tea ceremony with immense dexterity and finesse, and took the time to enlighten us about the local culture, art, etc. He also very generously offered us a delicious miso soup breakfast free of charge. Our stay here has been a wonderful experience. Highly recommend!!

Excellent location within short walk from Dogo Onsen. Japanese style rooms quite big. Very professional and helpful staff . Recommendation of restaurant was very fair.

No lift- little bit difficult with 3 kids and 5 big suitcases. Limited view from the windows- in the wall of nearby hotel with big air conditioning machine so quite noisy.

This place is in traditional Japanese style nestled amongst modern hotels. The location is excellent especially if you are visiting the onsen. The manager was very helpful and spoke good English. He went out of his way to find a Shabu Shabu restaurant for us and organised a lovely breakfast.

The shared shower was very strong but likely I just didn’t know how to turn it down!!

A beautiful building with a really friendly and helpful proprietor, and a short walk from Dogo Onsen.

Our room was right beside the loud HVAC system of the hotel beside us. Truly not the end of the world, I just thought it would be worth mentioning. This is why a smart traveller always brings earplugs.

Hissa was warm, welcoming, and very knowledgeable about the area and told us a lot about the history of the area. The room was more spacious than expected with kotatsu, shikibuton, and individual heat and A/C unit (user control, not central). We had a private bath time for the onsen and it was fantastic! Would absolutely go back for a relaxing journey close to the Dōgo onsen and shopping center.

The kotatsu and mat were not cleaned super well.

The proprietor Hisa-san takes good care with many details at his old Japanese style inn. It is attractive and comfortable.

Probably we wouldn't have bothered with the private bath option. There are many public baths around the city and it might have been more interesting (and better value) to do that instead.

Shimizu was extremely hospitable to us, contacting us ahead of time and clearly explaining everything about the ryokan. We had plenty of space in our room, futon was very comfy, and it had a really nice traditional atmosphere which was an important experience of staying in the Dogo Onsen area. Has a reservable private bath if you want a mini onsen to yourself!

Shower had a tap you had to push every 10 seconds which was not ideal. Roof beams also a bit of a bumping hazard - I realise it's part of the old building style, but Matsuyama Castle for example had padding on the beams to prevent injury. That would be a welcome addition here.
