The location in the centre of town is perfect for walking to shops, restaurants, cafes, galleries and the river. It’s also handy staying right above a charming old pub and restaurant so you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated with antique furniture, but also enjoy modern comforts like a great bed and shower. The continental breakfast in the restaurant was nice, and great to have it included in the room rate.

It’s a bit of a drag having to cart suitcases up and down the outside stairs, but that’s what you get with charming old hotels. We were allocated two car parks for our party of four, but were a bit irritated that a staff cleaner kept parking in one of them.

The room was a large room with a high ceiling and ceiling fan. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We had dinner at the hotel, and it was one the best meals we had during our 3 week stay in New Zealand. I opted for the belly pork and it was the best belly pork I think that I had ever had. My husband had the lamb shank the meat fell off the bone. Both portions were generous. Breakfast was included, however we opted for the full 'English' at an extra cost. It did not let us down. The whole ambiance of the Rutland Arms Inn is warm and friendly.

Absolutely fabulous staff, amenities and food, cannot speak highly enough of the courtesy we were shown. One of the best places to stay in our numerous trips around the North Island. There was only one thing that has stopped this review getting a 10++++. We would have told the manager had he been there when we booked out this morning, but felt telling staff was not the correct procedure. The bed!!

The bed was so uncomfortable, we honestly could not sleep. It was too firm and too small. The size of the room was large by modern standards so put a king size bed in the room. Please just change the bed it's far too uncomfortable. Everything exceeded our expectations except THE BED.

Beautiful room, very secure. Dinner in the restaurant was delicious, as was the included breakfast the next morning. Parking onsite which enabled us to leave our car and just walk around the beautiful city of Whanganui.

One thing I would say, is the room we were in, there was a sound of vent/air conditioning coming through the wall next to the bed. It did go off eventually, but came on again around 6.30am.

Loved the room in this Pub, situated on the high street so very close to everything. Good parking, but on gravel. Dinner was really good only place in New Zealand with custard on the menu. Bar staff and proprietor were friendly and indulged us well.

Breakfast was a disappointment and very restrictive. It was continental but we had to order what we wanted and the weetabix was like card board didn't have coffee and orange juice included it was one or the other or pay. Toast we order we we cam in and given to pieces but meant one was cold by the time we got to eat it and would have been better if we could have done this ourselves.

Location right in town is an easy walk to anywhere you want to go but everything you need is in house so no real need to leave. Spacious room, comfy bed. Free parking onsite is perfect as is the simple but welcome continental breakfast - delish compote. Staff we encountered were fab and the restaurant with all the pub dinner faves was delish, our waitress was outstanding. Great value, great stay.

On entry the room was a little warm for our liking but opening the windows and popping the fan on soon sorted that.

Nicely refurbished rooms and bathroom. Comfortable bed. Continental breakfast was very nice and homely. We ate at the restaurant for a being meal and it was superb. Very busy which is a good sign.

Onsite parking is a bit random as staff use the parks allocated to the rooms so have to shuffle around to accommodate you.

A charming hotel set within a really characterful area. Our room was spacious and had all the comforts we needed for our stay. The breakfast was an added bonus and the staff went out of their way to accommodate our requests. The evening menu offers a great choice of delicious dishes. A hidden gem in a beautiful part of the world. Definitely recommend as a top choice.

We enjoyed our stay albeit one night. The staff were excellent.

We understood that the breakfast was a Continental but were a little disappointed that if you wanted an additional cup of coffee or another piece of toast etc. you would have to pay extra for any additional items. We have travelled extensively throughout the world and can say that we have never had to pay extra for such additional items when having a breakfast described as ‘Continental’. Having said this it is only a minor criticism.

The service at Rutland Arms Inn is exceptional. Every member of staff we encountered during our stay were warm and welcoming. The love and care taken into restoring and updating the Rutland to still reflect its heritage is evident in every detail. The room we stayed in was lovely and spacious, we found the photos actually made the rooms look smaller than they really are. The surrounding areas are beautiful too.
