Our experience at the Brae Hotel in Shetland has been terrific!! The staff is outstanding and truly have made a difference. Starting with the breakfast and dinner staff of Scott and Curtis who immediately made us feel right at home with their upbeat demeanor, friendly service, music, and personal touch. The location was perfect for our adventures to Yell and Unst, Hillswick and Eshaness, Lerwick and Scalloway, Sumburgh and St. Ninians just for starters. The hotel desk staff was also outstanding Ilsa, David, Clair, Tracie were all extremely helpful sharing their Shetland Islands experiences and recommendations. They helped make each day a new and exciting experience. Although the hotel is older, it is maintained at a high level. The food is outstanding, both breakfast and dinner. They offer laundry service at a very reasonable rate. We definitely recommend the Brae Hotel and will return here in the future.

What a fantastic stay! Hotel is in a great location, rooms are extremely comfortable and reasonably priced! Meals are locally sourced and super tasty! Staff are great but the star of the show was a chap called Scott! His service was impeccable! So polite, always smiling and so handsome! A true gentleman.! A fantastic breakfast chef ( makes delicious scrambled eggs!!) breakfast was a great atmosphere listening to him singing away, what a voice!! , a real home from home! His service in the restaurant in the evenings was just the same, being so kind and attentive to everybody no matter how busy he was. And then to see him throughout the day attending to guests, cleaning, even weeding the hotel grounds! A fantastic all rounder and a true credit to the hotel. I will definitely be returning to the Brae hotel! A real hidden gem! Well done Scott and Curtis

As far as my wife and d I are concerned this hotel deserves an exceptional rating solely because of the efforts of Scott and Curtis who run the kitchen, restaurant and bar for sure at breakfast and dinner and I assume lunch although we never ate lunch at the hotel. We stayed 4 nights and these two gentleman made us feel respected , welcome and well cared for. They are the heart of the hotel’s customer service. The front desk personnel were also friendly and welcoming and we were allowed to check-in very early after arriving on the morning ferry.
The bar does not open until the restaurant does, at 6:00.

The hotel is in a very convenient location; accommodations are few and far between on Shetland. The breakfast was delicious, classic Fully Scottish. There was a staffing issue, and there was a gentleman, maybe the brother of a manager? that took it upon himself to make sure everyone was served as quickly as possible, with a grin and a few sunny words. Really a gent. Then, there was a Herring Gull outside the window that was quite friendly, and allowed our study. And, there was a fellow guest, an ornithologist, who was kind enough to share some local birding info along with his views on birds and wind power. It was a great place to stay.
Bring less "stuff" to cart up the stairs. ;-)

Perfect location for exploring the full island, the rooms were clean and well presented with everything you needed. The lounge, dining and bar area were all very clean and smart too Special mention to ALL of the staff who were very friendly, welcoming and most helpful!! The cooked to order morning breakfasts and the evening dining (which we had twice during our stay as the menu changes each day - fantastic!!) were beyond exceptional!! Cannot wait to go back!!
Genuinely could not fault this place at all!!

While Brae Hotel is a little dated in terms of its decor, do not underestimate this gem. What makes a hotel is without a doubt its staff, and here Brae Hotel really exceeds expectations. The staff were honestly some of the nicest people we've ever experienced at a hotel, particularly Curtis and Scott who served our dinners and breakfasts. They were incredibly kind, and both excellent at their jobs, keeping us topped up with food/drinks and providing an efficient, polite and smiley service throughout. Their warm welcome really made our stay wonderful, and I would definitely stay here again! Cooked breakfast is included in the price of the room, and the rooms are comfortable and have all the facilities you might need.
The wifi was a little patchy at times, but nothing serious.

The Brae Hotel is a fabulous place to stay. The managers, Jane and John, are exceptional hosts and take care of your every need. The room was spacious with a very comfy bed and lovely outlook, the shower was hot with good water pressure, the meals were excellent, but the thing that stood out the most for me was the absolutely lovely staff. From the managers, the staff who waited at our table, those cooking the meals, and serving at the bar - they were all friendly, respectful and so polite to us. It was a real pleasure to be staying there. It is also a great location if you want to travel up north to Yell or Unst, or to Northmavine. We stayed for 3 nights but could have easily stayed for 3 more. Well done Brae Hotel. Highly recommended.

Location is perfect if you want to make some (longer) walks in this part of the main island (Esha Ness, Muckle Roe, Ronas Hill,...). The hotel has a remarkable grey look and is easy to find, near the main road in the center of the village. Room is spacious (bedroom and ensuite bathroom). The best bed we slept in aroud Shetland (we stayed at four different properties). Breakfast (English) is ok. Dinner is recommendable (we've dined there 5 times and were surprised by the tasteful meals, well presented as well). Last but not least, service in the dining room was impeccable.
The corridors to the rooms could be more vivid. Everything else was fine, would definitely stay here again.

The location was excellent. We were close driving distance to the ferry to go to Yell and Unst, and the person at the front desk helped us with reserving a place on the ferry. Breakfast was cooked to order, plentiful and delicious. I'm so glad we chose to stay in Brae.
We stayed in a room with two twin beds. The room was smaller than we expected. One of the beds needs to be replaced as we both found it rather uncomfortable. The other bed was very comfortable. We told one of the housekeepers about the bad bed, so hopefully the hotel replaced it.

The hotel is well equipped and has everything that you need. The rooms are comfortable and clean. There is a restaurant serving a full breakfast in the morning and dinner at night. The dinner menus change daily and have vegan and gluten free options. The standard of the meals is really high. There is a little bar next to the restaurant for pre and post dinner drinks and prices are reasonable. The staff really make this hotel. They were helpful and always around. The two guys working on the bar and in the restaurants were really polite, friendly and helpful. They are an asset to the hotel.
This wasn't really something we didn't like, but it's important for people to know that Brae hasn't got many facilities as a village. There's a good chippy and a coop but the local pub is closed at the moment and the one attached to the hotel isn't open often. Most of the evening activities will be in the hotel.
