Everything! The level of care and details starts as soon as you arrive at the door and never stops until you leave. We had the most attentive staff throughout our 2 nights stay. The same person checked us in, showed us around the beautiful amazing hotel and its facilities and served us the most delicate dinner on both nights. The rooms were the most spacious we ever experienced in Japan (like as big as our entire flat in Canada) and clearly highlighted the hundred years old history of the building with great subtle renovations making it the most comfortable stay possible (e.g. double glazing windows, brand new bathroom and toilets, etc.). Even the owner came and chatted with us on our first dinner. I could go on and on about everything that was right about this ryokan, just go and experience it for yourself.

Absolutely nothing.

Fantastic stay. We loved staying here as part of our trip through Japan. It felt really special. Hida is quite peaceful and so is the ryokan. As this was our honeymoon we splashed out for the suite with mountain view. It was beautiful and really good that it came with the private bathing area. I have a tattoo so do not think I would be able to go to the outdoor and indoor bath that are also on offer. Please note, there is also a bath that can be booked for private use too. The meals were outstanding and we also enjoyed sake tasting for extra cost, but it was very reasonably priced. The staff went over and beyond.

Nothing could have been better, we enjoyed every aspect of our stay here. It is expensive but worth it for the experience. A few more massage chairs would be good as every time we tried to get one of the two they were occupied.

We booked the Juraku room for the in-room onsen and the room was huge. Many heaters all around to make sure the room was well heated. I was surprised that the only shower in the room was in the semi-open air onsen area, which is freezing cold in the winter, but it was fine after getting into the onsen. The tea in the room was a nice touch that we appreciated. Breakfast was amazing and the rice and grilled miso was some of the best we've had Japan.

The Juraku room we booked features a sunken hearth, which we thought would be converted to a kotatsu, but we were disappointed to find out that the hearth didn't serve any purpose. We separately added on the luxury meal dinner upgrade of pufferfish and Hida beef, but the portion of both was smaller than we expected for the price we paid.

We had a truly relaxing stay at this beautiful ryokan in Takayama. Our spacious room with private onsen on the 3rd floor overlooked a peaceful river — a lovely view to wake up to. The amenity kit was well-prepared and thoughtful. The onsen water was crystal clear, with a gentle warmth and cleansing feel that left us feeling completely rejuvenated. The peaceful atmosphere, paired with two massage chairs in the lounge area, made it perfect for winding down. The staff were genuinely friendly and went the extra mile to accommodate our dietary needs. A special highlight was the owner personally greeting us and even taking a photo together — a really heartwarming gesture that made us feel at home. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking to enjoy the slower pace and calm beauty of the Japanese countryside.

Not that easy to find the parking space. May need to put a bigger signage in english.

Absolutely incredible place to stay, every detail is perfect. The location, the view, the staff, the food. The sukiyaki with the upgraded wagyu was the best meal I've ever had in my life. The staff are so kind and took such good care of us, sharing lots of Japanese culture with us as well. We had a room with a hot tub and view of the temple, and it was just perfect. Such a beautiful town to stay in as well. We will definitely be back.

That we couldn't stay longer 😭

Upon our arrival, everyone was hospitable and friendly. The service was seamless. The room that we stayed in is called the Seika Room. The view was very peaceful and beautiful. We could hear the water flowing from the Araki river from our room when we opened the windows. The suite we booked was very spacious. The bathroom with the private bathtub and continuous hot water from the natural springs was the highlight of our relaxing visit. The dinner and breakfast were simply lovely!! Using local ingredients from the area. Cannot wait to be back.

n/a, the staff was very hospitable and accommodating.

By far the highlight of our trip to Japan. The service was exceptional, far above anything we have experienced before. The staff could not do enough - even running to meet us in the rain with an umbrella when we came back from a day out. The food was truly exceptional, multiple courses, multiple dishes of traditional food. The inn itself was so historic, beautiful. The location was quiet - we hardly saw any other tourists, very different to other aspects of our trip.

Wonderful staff, offering perfect service, warm hospitality, the manager even took our photo during the 90 minute traditional evening meal, and gave us the print at breakfast. Superb food, in a beautiful Ryokan, with comfortable Tatami area for beds, set in the most picturesque garden on a river bank. If you do only.1 Ryokan on your trip to Japan, choose this one. You can even reserve a private Onsen for an hour for $12 which gives an amazing couples experience.

The ryokan is filled with magnificent art works, tastefully arranged throughout. Our very large suite was on the top floor and had its own onsen bath that looked out towards the river and temple. It was quite sublime. The bed was comfortable even if the pillows were not but those ‘pellet filled’ pillows are pretty standard throughout Japan. The kaiseiki menu in the evening was excellent and the choice of western/japanese breakfast was nice to rotate through. The staff were very pleasant and thoughtful.

Although a small issue, having to pay for a coffee with breakfast was rather mean when the cost of the accomodation was $1000 a night. The upselling of menu choices and high prices for sake also threw shade on what was otherwise an excellent experience.

Absolutely beautiful historic building with incredible views out onto the river and architecture of Hida. Our private bath and room were gorgeous and luxurious. Beds were very comfortable. The dinner and breakfast were phenomenal traditional experiences. The staff gifted us both with beautiful chopsticks for our honeymoon. Wonderful location- just steps to the historic streets of Hida and only a short walk from the station. If you are looking for a wonderful blend of the traditional ryokan experience with some modern luxuries thrown in, this is the place.
