Very good experience. The people were very nice and helpfull and the place is beautiful in a old japanese house style. It was very well situated, the kitchen area were very nice (even if we didn't need it) and the room, very coozy.
Only thing we didn't like too much : the showers. A bit bancal by moment, especially for men. It would I've been nice to have more privecy for my partner then just a curtain (I was lucky, there is one with a close door for women). As for the rest with the shower, it was as clean a youth hostel can be (meaning that if 4 peoples pass before you, it showed), but they cannot clean each 5 sec, so good enough for us :).

Everything is perfect as to what I expected. First of all, the staffswere friendly. Thay even email us asking about our arrival time. They have both local and foreign staff so you wont have problem communicating. Year 2025 marks 100th year the building being built (of course it been renovated several times). Imagine staying at a hostel that old. You will definitely get that authentic Japan lese experince staying here. They put snacks at the common area. They also provide baggage delivery. They also provide rental bicycle which is perfect for our trip in the summer avoiding walking to long under the scorching sun.

Reasonably priced private room (shared bathroom) in a traditional Japanese building. It has good facilities (shared kitchen) and I appreciated the mattresses which made sleeping really comfortable. Location wise, it is about 15 mins walk from the JR train stationa and can easily walk to other sites around the town. This hostel is attracting mostly internationally travelers - which means everything has English instruction and staff can speak English well.
The shower facilities setup (multuple people sharing the same room with partition) is a bit unusual/ funny but the water pressure is good. It is an old house, so sound proofing is not great but this should be expected. There is no lift and I'd recommend to book rooms on ground level if you have a lot of luggages. As there are many travelers from around the world, some of them are not keeping the place as clean as you would usually expect in Japan but it is still very acceptable.

Very good prices and very good facilities. It has everything you can think of! Big kitchen with utensils and crockery for anyone to use, quiet working spaces, public bath, smoking area, beer for sale, free snacks, and even an indoor barbecue sand pit where you can request to use, buy your own food and have a barbecue! The room had an electric blanket on the mattress and a small desk. Parking overnight costs ¥1000. Good WiFi. The lady at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. This was a very quiet hostel with strict quiet hours, so if you are looking for somewhere to party or drink don’t book this.
Nothing.

I enjoyed my stay at Hostel Murasaki. The location is good (about 15 minutes away from the station on foot), the personnel are polite and friendly. You can also ask the staff for the bike rental service, but I didn't have a chance to do that because of the bad weather. Breakfast was good: hot coffee, toasts, juice and bananas while sitting around the irori fireplace and having a nice chat with the staff and other guests. Price/Quality ratio met my expectations. Nice choice for those who want to save some money and have a pleasant stay in Takayama. P.S. there was an electric blanket in the room which I used for the first time. That was cosy!
None!

Beautiful old house. Our room was very comfortable and spacious. The sleeping futons were very comfortable. We were plenty warm enough in our room with heaters and good blankets. The location was pretty close to town. Free snacks in the common area.
The bathrooms have an odd layout, it was difficult to find somewhere to put my clothes to keep them dry. The common lounge room area and the kitchen were mostly used by staff while we were there rather than other guests. It felt like most people in the hostel were staff or long term residents so the vibe was a bit different to what we are used to in hostels.

Superb vibe. Absolutely lovely staff and home-feeling environment. You have to set up your own traditional japanese bed but it's quite straight forward with printed instruction. The room has air conditioner and electric blanket during winter. Have to walk about 15mins from the station; however, it is located right across the river to Miyagawa Morning Markets. Overall, if you want to have experience with Tatami at a reasonable price, you should definitely give Hotel Murasaki a go.
No private bathroom; but the shared bathrooms and showers are clean and good enough. The air conditioner was ok but the blanket is absolutely a treasure to keep me warm and comfort the whole night.

Clean, everything was in good condition and worked really well. Great location, within 2 minutes of a convenience store and 5 minutes of some tourist hot spots. Not to mention the train/bus station isn't too far, about 15 minutes away. Staff were great, they attended to my needs and were happy to have a conversation and give recommendations. Also the old style Japanese house has been well preserved and added nicely to the atmosphere of my stay which I really appreciated. Also liked the privacy, which made me feel safe and comfortable. WiFi was really good, 100mb/s, which is always a big plus. Had access to a full commercial kitchen which was surprising, though I didn't cook anything. I'll definitely be coming back.
What I'm about to mention are only minor issues, but are things to consider and know about. These issues didn't in any way make my experience bad. Didn't realise that the showers were shared, as in you'd share the same space with anyone else having a shower at the same time in full view of each other. The rooms do get cold very quickly, since it's an older building, but the heaters did help. Another thing to note is that the walls are thin, so you will hear others when they speak and walk around, but it wasn't that bad.

The location of the accommodation is near the morning market and the old town. You can walk there. I drove there and there was a parking fee of 1000 yen. The receptionist is a foreigner who speaks English and the owner is Japanese. I stayed here for 2 nights so I got to use the free washing machine but there is no dryer here. I had to walk outside to dry my clothes, which is about 30 meters, but it was convenient. Since there is no elevator here, I stayed on the 2nd floor and my luggage was quite big. The receptionist helped me carry my luggage upstairs, which was very kind.
I booked a room for 3 people and got room number 9 which is located above the kitchen. On the first day of my stay, the smell of food entered the room. The smell was so strong that I had to buy an air freshener to spray on it to get rid of the smell. For the rooms on the 2nd floor, including the area in front of the room, it is filled with the smell of food from downstairs that floats up. I think the ventilation system is not very good. All the toilets and showers are downstairs, which may be inconvenient for the elderly to stay here as the stairs are quite steep and there are not enough toilets.

It was a good experience to stay at ryokan, tatami style. The room is warm, and they also provide electric heating blanket. The hostel is a bit far walk from Takayama Station especially when u have to pull big luggage, about 20mins walk, but it was bearable. The hostel allow us to store luggage before check in time and after check out time, that is the biggest plus point. And they have common area where we could wait as well. Overall, i highly recommend the place 👍🏼
Need to walk down to the bathrooms. All bedrooms are upstairs. But this is a small issue for me.
