What a lovely find! Located off a historical alleyway, this special hotel has just 3 rooms total. So they truly take care of their guests. From welcoming you with a drink to the handwritten welcome note in your room to the specially designed bathtub made of wood, every detail is charming and thoughtful. Rachel welcomed us warmly and answered all our questions. The location is close to a main street with convenience stores and bus stops to access the rest of Kyoto. If you have luggage, definitely take a taxi from wherever you are. It's a wonderful place to relax after a long day sightseeing.

Outstanding Experience at Ishibekoji Muan Ryokan, Kyoto From start to finish, my stay at Ishibekoji Muan in Kyoto was nothing short of exceptional. The experience truly exceeded expectations. Communication and Ease of Arrival The communication after booking was clear and prompt, making the entire process smooth. They provided detailed directions on how to get there, which made navigating Kyoto stress-free. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted with a complimentary welcome drink—such a thoughtful touch that set the tone for the rest of our stay. Warm Hospitality The staff went above and beyond to make us feel at home. We were given recommendations on local attractions and restaurants, which was incredibly helpful for exploring the area. They recommended Yakiyasai Isoya for dinner and it was amazing (highly recommend making a reservation). Their attention to detail and willingness to assist made the stay even more enjoyable. Location The location of the ryokan was perfect—quiet, peaceful, and just a short walk from some of Kyoto’s most iconic attractions. It provided the perfect blend of serenity while still being conveniently close to the heart of the city. The Stay - Family Room We booked the Family Room and it was incredibly spacious, offering more than enough room my husband and I. One of the standout features was the ability to close off a section of the room, creating a private space for others to sleep. This made the room feel even more comfortable and versatile, and would be great for a larger group/family. The Family Room also had two lovely sitting areas, perfect for relaxing or enjoying a quiet conversation. The bathroom was another highlight—absolutely amazing with both traditional and modern touches, and it felt like a luxurious retreat in itself.

The service was exceptional and the staff were extremely friendly. The bath was simply to die for and the features were super cool all throughout the room.

The price was extremely expensive. We wanted to experience a ryokan so we went ahead and booked anyway. However, as amazing as this place was, we still feel it should have been about 1 to 2 hundred usd cheaper than it was per day. We spent about 500+ per day for the stay not including the Kyoto city tax that was in addition.

Amazing Ryokan in Gion. This property is expensive but worth it. It’s in THE location, on a beautiful historic street close to all the attractions and Michelin starred restaurants. The rooms are nicely put together with traditional furniture but modern touches such as Dyson hair dryer and fan, with good air conditioning.

Nothing I didn’t like. I would say if you want a fully western style hotel, this may not be the place for you, but I enjoyed the experience of a traditional Japanese Ryokan.

I booked the accommodation to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. Everything was perfect, right down to the personalised welcome note left in the room. Leading up the stay, the team were very helpful with questions and recommendations. They were accommodating and allowed us to leave the bags, while we explored the city and waited for the check-in to open. Every detail in the room and accommodation has been thoroughly thought through, making the stay unique and definitely an experience that can not be replicated elsewhere.

The ladies working there are extremely fluent in English and are also super friendly and helpful. The whole place had a cosy atmosphere and room was spacious and clean 🤩. Hands down the most pleasant place I’ve stayed in throughout my times travelling to Japan. Definitely will book this place agn if I ever visit Kyoto again!

The steps to the rooms are steep, I was personally quite scared of going down the stairs 😭 Was also quite worried for the employees there since they had to carry my heavy luggages up and down when checking in and out.

My family and I want to experience staying in a ryokan or Japanese home type of setup, so I booked this place near Gion. We enjoy staying there for 4 days. Walking distance to Kiyomizu-dera. Sherrie and Shin take very good care of us. The room is clean and beds are comfortable. There is no TV in the room so we are able to stay there and enjoy the zen and calm environment during our Kyoto trip. Absolutely loving it.

The staircase is quite steep so will be good to bring smaller luggage instead of medium size luggage. Going up the stair to get to the room can be challenging.

Amazing location in a wonderful part of Kyoto - it was exactly as I imagined the traditional side of Japan to look and it was such a pleasure to explore the nearby area. Also very easy to taxi into the centre for food and drink

The only issue I had was that I don’t think it was value for money. Our room was very expensive in comparison to our friends who stayed elsewhere but nearby, and it sounds like their room was of similar standard and service. But we still had a great stay

EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING!!! We enjoyed our stay at Muan so much. It was beautifully decorated, the rooms were so spacious with excellent bathrooms and toilets. The staff were extremely friendly and made us feel so welcomed. The breakfast was delicious. Location was excellent.

Nothing! I didn't like that we have to leave so soon. I cannot wait to go back to Kyoto and stay at Muan. I would specifically make a trip to Kyoto just to stay there again. The entrance was a little hard to find at first because it was located on a private road and it doesn't show on google map. However, it was really convenient once you found it.
