An incredible addition to our holiday. We only regret that we did not stay longer, but we will definitely come back again. A super soulful place, lots of animals on the territory. A welcome bonus (fruits) and a wonderful varied breakfast in the morning. The animals came right to our house, you could communicate with them up close (my favorites are the pony John and the cat Sarah). In the evening it was very romantic to lie in the jacuzzi on the terrace and look at the stars. Thanks for Suzana, she told us a lot about the animals and was incredibly nice. Near the hotel there is an observatory (we took an excursion to see the planets and stars, 5 minutes by car) and a delightful castle on a hill where it is nice to go to meet the sunset.

The property is located in the countryside not far from Monsaraz and although it’s a farm, it’s super clean and well ordered. Our rooms were large and airy and led to an Eastern-facing terrace. All the better to pet the donkeys! We had a delicious breakfast before leaving and Amelia, the owner, was kind enough to give us the grand tour and introduce us to the rest of the rescue family, Bernardo the Coati, Daniel the Emu, dogs Emma and Lucky and too many cats to count. Amelia and Vasco are wonderful hosts. Can’t wait to return!

There was nothing we didn’t like!

It is difficult to know what to write as a review when everything was such a perfect fit for us; the property location, rooms, hosts, breakfast/refreshments on offer and overall ambiance all superb. The many animals on site may not prove to everyone’s taste but it is their home, and for us they added a wonderful extra reason to enjoy our stay. Susana and Vasco are such hospitable and helpful hosts, yet not at all intrusive, so we felt truly at home from the first minute to the last - it was so hard to leave when the time came! Thank you, we will return for sure one day.

What kind of stay that a 14 year child is willing to write a review? Here comes my daughter's: We had a fantastic time at Santa Catarina. Susana was very welcoming and attentive, making sure our stay was enjoyable. She even helped to call the animals in the field so that we could feed them, which was the highlight of our visit. The animals were very cute and would eat from your hand, especially the llama named Lamar(after Kendrick Lamar). It looked like an extraterrestrial organism. It would stand at the fence and just stare straight at us, waiting to be fed. In addition to 14 cats, a blind German shepherd, a pony, and three donkeys(including a baby), there is also an emu. It is a truly peculiar creature, and now I can definitely see why Australia lost a war against them. In the afternoon, one of the cats (Sarah) slipped into our room and jumped onto the bed, begging for pets. It was the best room service of all. She is sweet and soft, a very extroverted furball. Though be careful she might get a bit clawy once you get friendly. The breakfast is outstanding, they have other-worldly toast (I haven’t had bread this fluffy in a while) and fruits. Though the selection is small, it is well-chosen. Overall, our stay at Santa Catarina was truly memorable, with excellent food, adorable animals, and a cozy atmosphere that is immersed in nature. We would definitely come back next time we come to Monsaraz.

As we came in winter time, not a high season for star gazing. The keys to the rooms make sounds that might disturb neighbours at midnight. It was not a problem for us though.

Breakfasts delicious and homemade cakes. They even went out special to get us gluten free cake. The place is also a sanctuary which I had no idea before hand. They had llamas, emus, donkeys, meats and more. Quite amazing what they had built there.

Everything was perfect. There wasn't anything I did not like.

A warm nest to stay for a visit to Monsaraz and wide environment. Easy to find, allowing the discovery of the beautiful views on lake and fortress town. Ideal for families with children as they can enjoy the animals and the swimming pool setting. Good breakfast, served as from 830. Parking spaces were covered against the sun. Perfect hosts Suzanna and Vasco, help with whatever you need, watersports, restaurants, etc. Almost perfect darkness in the room.

All was very clean, except the spider webs in the corners of the room, very visible in morning light. Spiders are death due to insect vapour. The entrance to the hotel of the road is quite bumpy, but I am certain the hosts are planning to fix this.

Monte Santa Catarina is a beatifully maintained and guesthouse with ample facilities and welcoming hosts. In a stunning location looking at Monsarraz. A place to relax and unwind but also explore the nearby town and lake. Be warned though that you will need a car to get around. There is ample parking on site.

Monte Santa Catarina is a truly wonderful place to stay. Vasco and Susana are fabulous, welcoming hosts in a very special place. We booked there to go to the Observatory near the inn, but our night sky viewing was cancelled due to the weather...and we didn't care because we enjoyed staying there so much. Comfortable bed, great breakfast, amazing scenery, and a good location for sightseeing. The animals on their rescue farm make it even more fun.

Everything was exactly as other guests describe there was nothing that disappointed us ,a really lovely part of Portugal and so close to the observatory where we booked a night viewing , two memorable experiences in one package .

A quiet, friendly location, with an exceptional environment, great views. An excellent base to explore the surroundings, the lake, the castle, other activities. The family that own the location is very friendly and helpfull.
