I love how the ryokan, it was a rare experience..the ryokan so clean and big for me and my husband.. The staff hospitalility was superb.. And they had a big onsen too..and its private only for the guest..love it.
The location was very close to the station, but the near restaurant about 1km and close early. And the kombini also 1 km. So you should buy some food or snacks in advance to prepare. Oh also the pillow, i didnt know if it was a japan tradisional pillow, but for me it wasnt soft enough, maybe you can consider to change the pillow to the soft one. Thank you.

The ryokan was really beautiful. I really liked the garden in the front, the architecture, and the paving in the hallways. The couple that hosted were very friendly and they had three cute poodles. There is free coffee on the first floor. Our room had a private bath and the room itself was very comfortable. A note for travellers who haven't been to Japan, and something we discovered: the bathroom area is not heated by the AC unit, but it heats up well enough from the hot water/steam. Parking was very easy, and the inn was very close (5 min drive) to the Matsushima bay boat tours. We stayed at several ryokans during this trip, and the value of this one was great! I didn't get a chance to try the public bath.
I can't remember if an option for lodging with breakfast was available or not, but it would have been nice to have breakfast. We had a hard time finding breakfast before going on the Matsushima bay boat tour.

The staff are very friendly and helpful; this ryokan trains and employs young people with disabilities to work in hospitality and we found the service to be very good. The room and bathroom was spacious and had a charming old-fashioned lock on the toilet/WC door. The interior of the ryokan features very traditional details and the top floor had a large bathing area. It’s worth asking the owners about the history of this building, which explains a bit about the extravagance ;) If you like dogs, the owners have two rescued poodles that they’ve adopted who are on premises.
There was a strange odour throughout the building. Unfortunately, due to damage from the 2011 earthquake the elevator is out of order, and the impressive hallways are lined with pave stones which while picturesque, may be tripping hazards so we wouldn’t recommend this location if you have difficulty walking or other mobility challenges.

A really wonderful hotel in Matsushima - great for those traveling with a rental car. The hotel is clean and comfortable with all the essentials you may need. The traditional Japanese style rooms are large and the local area is very peaceful. The indoor hot tub is very relaxing, and nicely matches the interior design of the hotel. The staff are the highlight - they are all really polite and friendly. There are also two friendly dogs! This hotel employs young staff with varying abilities - all of whom were very attentive. This is a hotel worth supporting, and after staying here I feel like part of the family!

Absolutely amazing welcome and hospitality throughout from Kikuchi san and Yoshie. We were made to feel right at home . Very traditional ryokan from top to bottom so was a great cultural experience in terms of tatami-matted rooms , sliding shoji doors, tasty Japanese breakfast and decent Onsen bath on top floor. Peaceful and reasonably priced.
A little bit of a distance from Matsushimakaigan but easily walkable 10-15 mins. Found a great Taiwanese Restaurant on route and had spicy tonkotsu ramen. Actually ryokan was well located for Matsushima Station and Takagimachi Station so easy to get to Sendai and other surroundings areas of interest.

I had a fantastic stay at this ryokan. The indoor onsen was wonderfully relaxing, offering a peaceful and soothing experience. What truly stood out, though, was the incredible staff. From the moment we arrived, they made me feel like family—attentive, kind, and always ready to help with a smile. Their genuine hospitality really made the stay special. The room was comfortable and traditional, with everything I needed for a cozy, restful night. I highly recommend this ryokan for anyone looking for exceptional service and a peaceful getaway.

This was a wonderful ryokan. It had everything one expects from a ryokan of this kind. Cosy rooms, very well equipped, traditional ofuro bath, and especially kind and always smiling owners. This was a great choice. We also appreciated the fact that they employ people with some impairments. This ryokan, deffinitelly worth staying at, if you want to enjoy Matsushima and the traditional Japan.
The wi-fi connection could have been a little better. Some guests might be a little annoyed by the dogs, but I thought they were cute and helping to creat the "home-like" atmosphere. The distance from the Matsushima station is not too short when you have a heavy luggage, but the taxi cost only about 750 yen, which is not much when you're in a group.

It's a cosy, clean and well-kept ryokan.it seems I was the only guest there in early Dec 2022 but both the owners were very warm and friendly to me. I love the standard size tatami room washitsu. The shikibuton n kakebuton are very comfortable.i sleep on a traditional handmade futon made in Japan, back in Singapore so I have no problems with that. The owner was very kind to provide an extra heater for me upon request although there is air conditioning in the room.hence the room was always at a comfortable temperature. I love the sento or public bath upstairs.really relaxing after one long day of sightseeing. There's a fridge at the lobby area if you need.Free coffee too, since there were no mugs(but there are paper cups in the room) I drink coffee here in the morning before heading out. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for taking such good care of me. I will definitely return in the coming year.
Nothing at all.

The hotel was very beautiful and well-preserved, in old japanese fashion. However, the rooms were well isolated and we didn't hear our neighbours at all! There is a very charming little Japanese bath that makes for a relaxing soak. The staff was very friendly and helped take our luggage to our room, since the building suffered some damage from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and was not able to replace the elevator. Overall it was a wonderful stay, and I would recommend staying here.

We can highly recommend Matsushima Koumura. We stayed 4 nights and were very satisfied with everything. The owners were very nice and welcoming, the house is beautifully decorated and the little onsen perfect. The breakfast we had was very good and tea and coffee free. Everything was also very clean. The location is quiet, yet very close to all the sights in Matsushima.
