The Altnaharra Hotel is an absolutely epic place to stay, and has been on my bucket list for some time. I like it for its remoteness, and location in one of the least light polluted areas in mainland UK (a Bortle Class 1 oberving site, no less), and famous meteorological station (lowest UK temp ever recorded, but also the warmest place in the UK on occasions!!). It's a great place to stay for fishing holidays in Scotland, and for exploring Scotland's northerly regions. The staff were friendly and helpful and, once the other guests had settled, this was, without question, the quietest hotel room I have ever slept in, even though the place was fully booked.

I loved the very comfy bed, the hot bath with great hot water, yay, and the lounges, and decor and food looks really good, and the perfect setting, near fields, next to a creek, and a stone bridge, with a gorgeous drive to get there from Tongue, only about 25 minutes inland from the NC500. Well worth the fun drive. I loved the staff; Henry was very warmly welcoming and Valentine stood in the entry doorway, to wave us off, My Assistance Dog, Tarkina, and I.

Nothing to not like.

A comfortable hotel in a fairy remote area .The single tack road from Tongue to Altnaharra is beautiful . The nearby loch is in an area that experienced ‘the Clearings’in the 1800’s when landowners cleared people from their homes to use the land for sheep as wool was in demand . There are no buildings to suggest anyone ever lived here . The food was excellent . The hotel was very Scottish and one evening a fire was lit adding to the ambience . The cuckoo was always around . This is a rather special with very helpful staff.

Nothing .

Beautiful old hotel with lots of character and charm. Remote location, perfect to escape and slow down the pace a little. Cozy open fire, and comfy lounge area. Room was well equipped and clean. We had both dinner and breakfast in the hotel - and both were excellent. Great quality, good portion sizes and great selection available. We were pleased with our stay, staff were friendly and attentive. We would stay again.

Very relaxing overnight stay. Barman who checked us in and was on duty that evening couldn't have been friendlier. Old school style room but comfortable and it had a brilliant shower. Excellent scrambled eggs and quality smoked salmon for breakfast.

Great cooked breakfasts but lacking healthy options. Would have liked to have seen fresh/dried fruit and natural/Greek style yoghurt on offer.

We loved this property. The room was exceptional, large and comfortable with an enormous bathroom. Very comfortable bed. Fabulous breakfast and excellent evening meal; all freshly prepared and cooked with a varied menu for both meals. The location was exceptional. A little off the beaten track as we were travelling the NC 500, but the journey was breath taking and worth while. The outside of the building was in the process of decoration but this did not impact our stay and did not reflect the inside of the property. The host was lovely as was the chef; thank you. Would love to return as this was our very favourite hotel.

Although we were more than satisfied with every aspect of our stay, the host mentioned that our room was due to be refurbished!

Lovely welcome on arrival, where you book breakfast and evening meal times. Nice room with en-suite facilities TV, kettle, hairdryer etc. Liked the tartan colour scheme. Meal in the evening and breakfast were lovely, hubbie especially enjoyed the creamy porridge. Convenient stop off for us doing the top of the NC500.

Would have liked a veggie option on the menu for the evening, luckily hubbie eats fish. Hotel is in the middle of nowhere which was fine with us as we had transport.

We stayed here for one night and wished we had been able to stay longer. When you drive into the property, don't let it fool you. We wondered what we were getting ourselves into. But, wow, when we walked in the door, we were very pleased. The main floor has beautiful, cozy lounges to relax, have a drink, read a book, etc. As others have mentioned, the 'resident' stag was in the yard, just watching us arrive. What a treat! Our room (Hope) was very big, beautiful decor to go with the period hotel; the bed was very comfortable and we had a great sleep. The bathroom is big and very modern, even with heated floors! Our dinner and breakfast were tasty, the staff were very attentive, in particular Valentine, the fellow at the desk, who also is the bartender during dinner. So very friendly and made us feel welcome. We absolutely loved staying at this beautiful hotel and if you have time, we recommend staying more than one night, for some relaxation in a country setting.

There aren't any towns or anything near the hotel, if you were hoping to go shopping, etc. You really are out in the middle of nowhere, but that isn't a deterrent, because it's a beautiful property and very relaxing and quiet.

The hotel looked a bit tired on the outside but step inside and you are just in the most welcoming and comfortable place. The lounge area with its open fire and comfy settees was just wonderful. The dining room and food were just amazing. We were even treated to 3 stags coming down from the fields to walk past the window. The rooms were really nice and well equipped with everything you need. The staff are really welcoming and friendly. A truly authentic hotel with decor to match its history. Definitely worth a visit and would highly recommend.

There was nothing we didn’t like. Everything was spot on.

The location was perfect. I have never felt so relaxed during and after a stay. The food was excellent and value for money. Really terrific breakfast cooked to perfection. Very good service that exceeded my expectations. Thank you to Valentin and Henry - fabulous customer service!

Can’t think of anything that I didn’t like.
