Hotel Slovakia (Architects: Gabriela Cimmermanová, Otto Sedlák, Stanislav Toman) is a remarkable place, a great and elegant example of Slovakia’s / Czechoslovakia’s brutalist architecture. Luckily there wasn’t too much refurbishing (as for now / Summer 2025) and one can only hope that future renovations will take place with consideration and in respect of the cultural heritage. The tiles in our bathroom were a bit disappointing, some random 90s design that didn’t fit the overall style of the hotel, besides that we were very happy to experience this place! (The shopping mall in front of the building should be torn down though, as it disrupts the original axis that was once created by the city planners…) Don’t miss to book breakfast to see the amazing original ceiling lighting in the restaurant-area! A recommendation, not only for architecture and design enthusiasts! Fun fact: The architects received the 1981 Dušan Jurkovič Award for Hotel Slovakia, which is Slovakia’s architectural award with the longest tradition.

What I enjoyed most was discovering that the unfair reviews that this hotel has received were unjustified. It could do with a refit, of course; but it works well, is exceptionally clean and has excellent food. I was also impressed by the professionalism, friendliness and helpfulness of the staff: the management should be applauded for this.

The view from my room: I could see the hills (and the Dubeň observation tower which is worth a visit) in the distance peeking out above a Starbucks sign on the side of a shopping centre. It wouldn’t be right, though, to ask the developers to demolish their shopping centre.

This is an old style communist hotel. Some may not like the brutalist styling or the dated interior, but the hotel does have a genuine 60's/70's ambience. As with all unrestored hotels from the era, it's getting a bit tired. I think there are only two floors operating now. We loved the ceiling in the restaurant - worth going in for that alone. We liked the traditional elevator with doors only on the outside. The staff were friendly and professional and everywhere was acceptably clean. There was a cathode ray tube TV - was amazed to find it still worked - complete with snowy picture. There was a huge swing window in our room (once we'd worked out how to operate it). The location is good for the old town. There aren't many of these hotels left - it's always good to help keep them going.

The beds were pretty uncomfortable, so didn't sleep very well. Was also disappointed by the 90's plumbing in the bathroom, the old style plumbing has to be seen to be believed! That said, the shower head was hanging off the wall in a nod to tradition. In another nod to tradition, breakfast was served cold with disgusting powdered orange juice. Get there early if you want hot food.

I was looking for a night rest in Zilina. And the search showed me this place as the best option, so I took it. I really like the style of the building from the Soviet ear. The location of the hotel is about 15-20 minutes from the train station and about 5 minutes from the city center, which is really good location. The check in was done fast and provided with all the information. I get to my room which was on the fith flour. The room was simple and ideal for one person. The bed was good.

When I entered the room, I smell a strange smell of dust, as if the room wasn't freshen for some time or after the renovation. But after opening the window, the fresh air entered the room.

A lot of interesting nostalgia inside the hotel taking you back to Czechoslovakia former times. The staff let you choose another room if you’re not happy with the one you booked. Hotel is just a few steps to the Aupark shopping centre, and transportation. Probably the cheapest hotel in Slovakia so it’s easy on finances, and they never seem to be short on rooms due to the sheer size of the hotel. I’ve stayed there a few times, it’s not luxury, but great on the wallet.

The first time a stayed there, the shower was blocked, and the bed was broken. But the next time I stayed there, I explained the situation to the receptionist, and she made sure I got a comfortable room.

For the price it was very good. It was reasonably clean and the WiFi was excellent. Not too noisy except by the hallway door. Everything worked in the bathroom.

There were cigarette butts in the windowsill and sometimes people smoking in nearby rooms (at the window). You can't leave the window open or pigeons will come in. I thought the bed was fine, but you can sometimes feel the wood supports through the thin mattress.

It is a good place for a short stay. The room was clean and quiet. It was warm in the room. The bed was very comfortable.

It looks a bit abandoned from the outside. The corridors need some cosmetic renovation, but the room was fine.

The price was the main thing, Ive stayed a few times before and its convienient for everywhere really.

Slill no kettle available for the room, we brits like a brew, I was going to book it for another few nights, but the price went up and it wasnt much dearer to get a room closer to the railway station at one of the Penzions

Calm neighborhood, shopping mall across the street, old style luxury in a reassuring way. Only a few minutes’ walk to the heart of the old town.

Hard and thin mattress and very thin pillow.

Clean and comfortable. It's an old Soviet hotel and ir's not had a major renovation since the 1970s, but as I said clean comfortable and friendly staff

The faded and scratched window tinting.
