I chose Portland Manor as I was doing a trailrun the next morning and the start was nearby. However, Portland Manor far exceeded my expectations and God willing I WILL be back to simply stay a few nights, go for hikes, cycling, sitting by the dam and just savouring the sublime peacefulness, sipping coffee or wine and just … being there. Honestly, it is a bit out of the way and believe me, definitely worth it. Claudia was also kind enough to pack me a breakfast which I could take with and enjoy before the run started. Much appreciated, and the nuts were especially a thoughtful touch. Thank you!

Leaving. I didn’t like leaving.

The property itself was stunning and historical, with beautiful nature and farmland all around. We were there for my brother in laws wedding and they certainly chose the perfect idyllic venue. Special shout out to Claudia the manager and Stella from housekeeping. The whole staff really was so helpful, warm, welcoming and went above and beyond. The food was also fantastic.

Only thing to not is that because the water is recycled from the river or nearby water source, it is yellow in color and has a unique smell and taste. It’s still safe to use and bottled water is readily available for drinking but this is just good to be aware of.

It's not often you come across a 10/10 property but this was absolutely it. I couldn't believe the value for money, what a hidden gem. This is a must stay if you're doing the Garden route! Staff on arrival were fantastic, ensuring I pre-booked my meal so I wouldn't miss out on Christmas day. The views were out of this world and the pool area was gorgeous. The grounds, the lake, the cow barn (restaurant) were excellent. Very tastefully decorated.

The one issue was when I checked out there wasn't a member of staff on reception. I left my key and got on my way. 25 minutes down the road I got a text to say I had forgotten to pay for my meal. Being from another country, an EFT was not possible without incurring a lot of charges. So I had to drive all the way back, taking an hour out of my day and scuppering my plans. Really, staff should be on the desk during check out hours.

While our suite was lovely the bathroom was just ok. The whole compound is amazing, like traveling back in a wonderful historic setting. The swimming pool is beautiful, the view over the huge dam as well. The lady at the cowshed was very welcoming, even made us pizza (super tasty!) after hours.

There were many hours without water until it came back late at night. This wasn’t explained or communicated and no water in bottles or buckets was supplied. Nevertheless (and despite the fact that neither of us had breakfast) the reception staff tried to charge more then five times the price compared to the one quoted at booking.com for the family member who came later to share the room. It was unprofessional and didn’t make sense, but still it remains a lovely and very recommended stay.

We loved getting away from the city to this peaceful haven. The fireplace in our room was definitely a big hit for us.

The tap water was a bit brown/ yellow in colour, presumably borehole water which is not a problem, but we would suggest that a fridge with water bottles/ water dispencer in the general area would be of great value. But all in all it is a great place to escape the busy city life.

It takes you back in time and is the right place to stay if you are wanting an escape from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s absolutely amazing.

The bathrooms need some updating. Whist the owners are trying to maintain the original feel I do believe that the bathrooms can be updated.

The staff was super helpful and went out of their way to accommodate our needs. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Check-in and Check-out was very easy. The property left us in awe, what a beautiful rich history!

Honestly not a single thing. Everything was perfect!

The view and silence was fantastic. The rooms are big and clean and the staff was very friendly. There was fun activities to do lime rowing and cycling and hiking in nature. The stay at Portland manor was fantastic.

Unfortunately the room that we stayed in didn't have a small fridge or any eating wear to have a small snack or to keep your drinks cold.

This is a special place — the historical manor is every bit as impressive and charming as it looks on the pictures. The staff was friendly, breakfast and dinner fantastic. Our kids loved the pool, we loved the atmosphere and tranquility. There was an issue with our booking, but the staff found a solution that worked well for us. It is in the countryside, but only a short drive out of Knysna.

Our stay at Portland Manor was exceptional. I loved everything about it from the minute we arrived and enjoying a welcome port. The staff always went out of their way to help and were so accommodating. We enjoyed all our meals in the Cowshed, lovely variety at breakfast time and delicious farm bread. The grounds are peaceful and quiet. Spacious room and ours had a beautiful view over the garden and pool.
