The owner, Robert, ensured that we were taken care of, from recommending hiking routes to meals. At the restaurant, we asked for the English menu from the waiter. He saw us and came over and recommended us stuff on the menu of the day, which was only in German. The location was perfect and we simply parked our car and took the local transport around. It had a great view over the town, and you can actually see the sunrise over the mountain behind the hill. There is a shortcut by foot (just a minor slope) to the town, which is somehow not recommended by Google maps. Robert saw us walking back to the hotel one afternoon and offered us a ride as it was very hot! The restaurant is good but do know Wed is their rest day and the restaurant is closed. It has alfresco dining overlooking the town too. Robert also gave us the use of their washing machine without charging extra. The furniture is the traditional Swiss type, realised that when we visited the cultural museum. 😀

The shampoo was in sachets, and soap bars were provided, which was a little dated practise 😀. Would have preferred thicker pillows 😴.

So pleased we chose to stay there, the owners and staff were lovely. The food was delicious and generous portions. We had a balcony room with amazing views of Appenzell and surrounding countryside. The bed was the comfiest in our 5 week tour of Switzerland. We travel to Switzerland every year from Australia and will definitely stay there again.

It was a traditional "old-school" room. Simple, no nonsense. The chef owner of the hotel made us feel very special. He even served breakfast personally.

Would be great if they had a mini-fridge and a kettle. The staff were kind and cheerful. One very sweet individual lent us a kettle for the duration of our stay. The view from our room was unfortunately blocked by a very big tree. Luckily, we were able to enjoy a splendid view from the terrace. And the panoramic view is what this hotel is really all about.

We loved being on a scenic hillside just above town. While the short walk from the train station was up a short steep hill, the exercise was welcome after long flights and train rides.

We did not care for a few of the local cheese varieties... But no reflection of this fine hotel.

Quiet and serene. Enjoyed the double bathroom sinks. Liked their morning breakfast, nice friendly staff.

Noisy/creaky hardwood floors. I would like a ceiling fan, the room was stuffy after a warm day and a fan would help move the air. My wife would have liked a tea kettle.

A fantastic stay, with kind and helpful hosts and a lovely, comfortable and spotless room. The views from the terrace out over Appenzell and the region are great, and the breakfast (included in the piece for my stay) was plentiful and fresh. All in all a very good stay.

The staff are warm and welcoming ! They were helpful and went out of their way to support our stay! Great location, clean and comfortable rooms with stunning views.

We loved our stay here. We got caught in the rain while hiking, and we're glad we had such a nice hotel afterwards. Breakfast was amazing and the staff were awesome! One of our favorite stays in Switzerland

This hotel exceeded our expectations. We loved it so much! The room and view were amazing, bed comfortable and the staff were so lovely and gave us good tips for what to do! Easy to park, beautiful walks around the hotel and it had such a beautiful outdoor area for breakfast and dinner. We wish we could have stayed longer. 10/10 from us!

Typically Swiss property with unique rooms and furnishings. Superb view from our balcony over Appenzell. Excellent meals and super friendly staff.

The curtains in our room were not thick enough to stop the early morning light waking us up very early.
