The Lodge provides a perfect home for a few nights in Tortuguero (we did 3 nights). The communal areas of the Lodge include the restaurant, pool, bar area, pontoons with rocking chairs / hammocks - all of which are gorgeous and well kept. We particularly lovely the pool and bar area - this felt very cozy. Tours are well organised and reasonably priced compared to lots of other locations ($30-$40 + park entrance). Additionally, the Katonga dinner on the floating boat is a great experience. The staff were lovely and friendly from the bar and restaurant staff through to tour guides. The hotel were helpful arranging transport (our transfer from San Jose to the hotel was great with a full guided tour!). Breakfast was really good with a fruit platter and a main meal. We were very impressed. The rooms receive poor reviews from when we looked however we thought the basic style rooms were lovely - the bathroom was a good size and a powerful shower. The lack of windows didn’t bother us as the netting was great at keeping insects out but immersing us in the experience - we loved waking up to the birds! No WiFi in the rooms really wasn’t a bother as we could read in the evenings or if we wanted wifi, we could sit at the bar and the drinks were delicious. The Lodge is a short walk (10mins) or boat ride from Tortuguero town, which is great for an afternoon drink or lunch / dinner, and accessing the trails.

We struggled to think of anything here - we did a few weeks in Costa Rica and this was by far our favourite stop. The Caribbean vibe mixed with the Costa Rican vibe in this area is so fun. Make sure to keep CRC on you as we found there was much less use of $ in this area.

We were 4 people staying in December, outside of turtle season and at the end of the wet season. Location was good and we saw toucans, sloths and green macaws on the 1km path to tortuguera. The caribbean beach is wild, with driftwood and turtle nests complete with eggshells from the hatchlings. Breakfast was excellent and our rooms were clean, spacious and cool with hammocks on the verandas. The rooms are also built with screen windows to keep the insects out while letting the jungle +surf noises in. Light sleepers beware! There is free drinking water available 24/7 at the pool area, important as tap water is salty at tortuguera. The hotel is a bit too 4star for our tastes but it could be that the high service levels and prices are exactly what you want. The boat ride in from La pavona is great too.

Our teenager was traumatised by the lack of WiFi in the rooms.

Breakfast was consistently delicious. Dinners were great except for one evening when a huge group came in and the same thing I ordered a previous night was lacking this night.

Air conditioning would have been nice, or simply a floor fan, but I liked this place so much I'd come back again without it. There is always the pool to cool off. Such a pleasant place, and the staff went above and beyond when we missed our flight (due to a random 1 1/2 earlier rescheduling in which Sansa Airlines neglected to let us know about). In a moments notice they found boat transport and a shuttle to take us all the way to Manuel Antonio.

The lodge is in a beautiful part of the park with the lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other. The pool and seating / lounging area were very nice. We ate dinner at the hotel one night and the menu selection was good. The complimentary breakfast was also good with many options to choose from.

The check-in process / experience was very hectic and chaotic and we were not provided with all of the necessary information. We had to ask about all of the tours offered and even still the paper provided was not descriptive or detailed. They also did not mention upon arrival we needed to purchase a park pass.

Lovely gardens, sitting areas and pool with wildlife to see and hear . Reasonable bedroom . Walking distance from beach and town . Food was good and evening meal was reasonably priced .

Drinks were very expensive . Staff did not appear to be happy or enthusiastic about their work . The excursions on offer were expensive . We used a local guide in the town for a canoe trip . A more proactive welcome could include some information on the hotel grounds with perhaps a low cost walk around the gardens . Questions we asked before arrival were not fully answered .

Location is fantastic with both lagoon and beach. A little out of town but an easy 20minute walk. The pool is perfect and you can watch the wildlife whilst there. Bar area is lovely too. Beautiful grounds which are well kept. Head to the top end of the property and explore the hidden trail, we saw humming birds, toucans, butterflies. A few steps from the beach which you can’t swim in due to strong currents but amazing for turtle watching, pick up a bucket at the hotel to litter pick. It is just a 5min walk to the Turtle conservancy which has an interesting film.

Great location. Beautiful grounds with lots of birds / iguanas around. Could hear the howler monkeys. Easy walk into town. Beside the beach. Nice pool, kids loved it, had toucans flying around it. Food was good. Bathroom in the cabins was nice

Room hot - would be more comfortable with AC. Was expensive for what it was. Restaurant nice food but expensive. They added on a considerable surplus to everything they organised for you - eg boat from la pavona, tours etc, so you end up feeling that they are taking advantage of their guests rather than looking after them. Hotel guide for the turtle tour wasn't great, but our canal boat tour guide was good. We organised our own transport to /from la pavona as it was a lot cheaper than the hotel boat.

Nice room, beautiful pool, bar, lounge, etc., decent food, and more vegetarian options than we found at our other hotels. Amazing tours, and very easy to arrange them. Great drinks.

Rooms can be a little noisy from the sounds of people in the adjoining room, especially stomping and door slamming, but maybe we got unlucky with a loud family in the room next to us. The privacy screen on the window was a little more transparent than we would have liked—this would not have been as much of a problem if the kids from the family next door hadn’t passed right outside our window a lot.

The property is nestled between the canal waterway and the Caribbean Sea which is quite spectacular. The grounds are really beautifully kept and our accommodation was spacious. We booked a free standing bungalow which was good. There wasn't airconditioning in the rooms which we found tough being our first few days in Costa Rica... The humidity in May was over 90%. The team in the restaurant were excellent and very friendly & attentive. The food was really good. The pool area was clean and was next to the bar and restaurant area which gave it a nice atmosphere. The bar area is separate so you can sit and enjoy an early evening drink b4 dinner, or grab a coffee and relax after breakfast.

We were disappointed by the front of house staff. Our welcome was almost non-existent apart from the basics, and when we tried to ask for assistance one morning to buy a pass for the national parks, the girl was particularly abrupt, and told us she couldn't help us as she was there to help people check-out....NB there was not a check-out anywhere in sight. It tainted what could have been a very good experience. In comparison to the other places we have stayed since (3 others). Fix this front of house care and I think Mawamba is a great choice.

Good hotel in terms of location and territory. Large garden with birds and iguanas. On one side is the river, on the other there is a beach with access to the sea. You can walk to the city and the national park. Delicious restaurant (better than in the city) and good breakfasts. The rooms are simple but clean. I definitely recommend this hotel.

However, it should be noted that the staff is lowly motivated to communicate with guests and give advice on excursions. I would recommend choose alternative guides who provide detailed information about the area and features before taking a tour from the hotel. Communication with guests in hotels is very mediocre. The place is suitable for a maximum stay of two nights.
