Family owned ryokan, where all staff members were very nice. Room quite large for 2. Indoor and outdoor bath (rotenburo) were quite nice. Also possibility to reserve/privatize the bath (for example for a couple or a family). Dinner and breakfast were very good and well served. Complimentary coffee and ice cream in the lobby. 5 minutes walk to a convenience store.
This is not the best ryokan I have stayed in, but the overall service is well positioned with the price (JPY 30000 for the room with dinner and breakfast for 2 persons is reasonable). The ryokan is a little outdated, but to some extent it has its charm. Location is a little remote from Kusatsu center: it takes about 15 minutes walk to yubatake.

This hotel is a Ryokan (Japanese-style inn), I liked the futons and tatami mats. The style of the room was great, it fixed me and my friend's sleep schedule because of how light the room gets with the sun beaming through the sliding shades. There are a family onsen, private, and separated women's and men's onsens with inside and outdoor onsens (note: the onsen indoors is way hotter than the outdoor one). We stayed 3 nights, Thursday to Sunday. On the first night, there were no guests staying over, which made the vibe creepy at night (but this was because of how quiet it was). The rest of the nights were great though our neighbor was loud and the walls are thin. There was breakfast included which surprised me, and there was a free yukata rental. The staff was nice and understanding.

It was a homely guesthouse in a traditional style. The staff were so lovely and kind - they really made our stay great. The futon were comfortable and the view from the room was stunning. We didn’t know a simple breakfast was included so that was a nice surprise. Yummy bread and egg and salad. The outdoor onsen (private and shared) were very nice and we loved the yukata available in many sizes and colours. Also, it wasn’t clear in our booking but we did get our own toilet so shared bathroom just means for bathing. We liked staying 10 minute walk from the center of town so it was extra peaceful. We felt like we had an authentic experience and would love to stay again.
AC was a bit loud.

Our first time in a Japanese Ryokan, and the experience was lovely. This place is a little bit out of the way, away from the Centre of Kusatsu, but we were driving so it was accessible. A parking spot was made available for us for free. The check in time is only till 6pm. We missed this fact and were running 1.5 hours behind, but they graciously waited for us when we called to let them know. Also we forgot some items in the safe when we left but they kindly helped courier it to our next destination.

Friendly staff and responsive over e-mail. Quaint property and spotlessly clean. Dipping in the onsen in the winter morning before you head out for the day is genius move cause it will keep you warm for a good hour or so before you need a jacket; and such a luxury to rest your muscles in after exploring town on foot the whole day! The main town is about a 15 minute walk. Free breakfast is simple but filling.

You can make the bath private after 10pm, great for those who feel shy / to enjoy making more noise with friends inside Overall good value for money for those looking for the ryokan experience but are on a budget.
The quality of the beef sukiyaki in the dinner was so-so You have to set your own bedding - not really the norm for a ryokan where most (albeit at a higher price range also) often prepare it for you while you have dinner Small place so only one dinner and breakfast time slot Walk is a little far from kusatsu onsen town.

Wonderful onsen hotel. Provides an authentic experience. The onsen was very good. Hotel is small and provides a personal experience with an excellent onsen comfortable bed and it is very clean. Walking distance to the center of town. Wonderful experience.

Family run business, one can expect an authentic Japanese experience. The futon was so comfortable. Also, the on-site onsen was clean and readily available to use. The hotel is only a short walk away from the town center and the bus station
The property is a little bit dated.

Fantastic Ryokan with extremely nice and hot onsen inside and out. Magical in the snow. I couldnt have felt more relaxed after just 2 nights. Aparently Studio Ghiblhi staff came to the hotel for inspiration while making spirited away.
The room was a little bit cold

Our room was a big corner room so we had PLENTY of space and a view of the mountain range. The hot baths were clean and beautiful. There is a foot bath right at the entrance of the hotel that we LOVED!
