Quiet and had 4 private onsens available for use. Rooms were big and comfortable, with good amenities. Very friendly staff as well.

The dining area was open air and there were a lot of insects including bees. Same for the outdoor private onsens. It was no issue for me for the smaller insects but the buzzing bees was kind of unnerving. I also did find that overall, the food was above average at best compared to other ryokans I have stayed in the past. But that said, taste is a personal preference. Another small matter was when the ryokan contacted prior to my stay to ask for any dietry restrictions, I had told them the item I do not eat. They replied that they do not serve that. But guess what, during dinner. One of the items was that particular ingredient.

I liked the location away from the city noise and the ryokan itself with all the traditional decorations inside and outside the rooms. We didn't manage to visit all private onsens (there are four of them, two inside the building and two — outside, in the bamboo grove), but the ones that were located outside were almost serene. One can enjoy onsen without interruptions. Also, we had a friend who has tattoos. And this was the only option she could choose from. So, private onsens are a great addition to the ryokan itself. Oh! And the river view from our traditional Japanese room was quite nice.

The only downside was the distance. So, come by car if you want to get there smoothly.

It was such an unforgettable experience stay for our first visit to Japan and first time experiencing traditional ryokan with natural onsen in such beautiful setting. Everything had exceeded our expectations! We travelled from Tokyo by Shinkansen to Minowa, then took a local train to Shuzenji before taking a local bus to the ryokan. From bus stop it was only a 5 minutes walk down the hill before we found the ryokan nested right along the stream. The place was in a beautiful setting, proper Japanese countryside. Staff were welcoming and they spoke very good English. We had a traditional style room with futon and tatami with a balcony right next to the stream. Everything in the room was functional, clean and spacious. The free yukata was awesome! We were wearing them throughout our stay, super comfy. The 10 course meal by the river was exceptional, every dish tasted fresh and delicious. It's definitely worth reserving a table and dine at the ryokan for the full experience. There were 4 private hot spring baths, of which we tried all of them. They were amazing! 1 was indoor, 2 outdoor and 1 simi-indoor. They also had communal baths separated by gender but since we went there as a couple we didn't try them, only private ones. You scan the QR code to check if they are vacant and you simply just go in if they are free. The place was so peaceful and tranquil we wish we could stay longer.

Everything! I spent a lot of time looking for an affordable Ryokan with private onsen as my partner has tattoos and this place was perfect. The private onsen are amazing and you can easily check which ones are free. The location is beautiful next to the river and we enjoyed an early evening stroll there before dinner. The room was beautiful and had everything we needed and more. The staff are very attentive and friendly as you would expect in a Ryokan, I did feel a little uncomfortable as I am not used to that level of service but it does make you feel very well looked after.

This isn't a negative but the breakfast wasn't really to our taste, not first thing at least, but saying that, I did really enjoy trying the traditional Japanese food and it was possibly the best miso soup that I have had. The location for the breakfast is also beautiful next to the river. This is also not a negative but the location is quite rural so there wasn't too much to do within walking distance and we didn't drive there although there are buses. There are only 2 restaurants nearby and the closest shop is about a 20min walk. Saying that it is a beautiful area nestled in the mountains and a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and this meant we took a break from running around seeing the sights and really relaxed.

The baths, which include the gender segregated big bath and four private baths, three of which are outdoors, are a highlight, especially the outdoor ones in the bamboo grove. No reservations are required for the private baths, but they have a website you can check to see if the bath is in use. Wifi is accessible across the premises, so accessing this is easily done. If you opt for on premises dining (and you should!), you will dine on the terrace, overlooking the river. Food, like most ryokans, focus on local seasonal ingredients. With the area famous for wasabi cultivation, expect this ingredient to make an appearance and open your eyes to what it can do! Rooms were spacious and comfortable.

Getting here is probably not going to be easy, as this is out in the countryside. You will eventually need to take a bus (or taxi or drive) to get to Tatsuta. Staff were very good, but you may struggle if you don't speak any Japanese. If you don't like insects, you might find yourself freaking out, especially when by the riverside. Rooms use the hot spring water for the hot water tap; this may mean the hot water in your room may take some time to arrive. All minor things here, and no real complaints on the experience.

The room has sliding door like windows that allowed the spring air and sounds from the river to fill the room. The table and chairs facing the river were perfect for reading, and the recliner could not have been more comfortable. The open-air tub is constantly filled with hot water, so it is always ready.

For breakfast I was sat at a kotatsu. The chair you sit in had a cushion that I could not figure out the right way to sit on. This had me eating the meal, which was downright amazing by the way, at an awkward position. No fault beyond my own, and I wish I had asked as I'm sure they would have happily explained the correct way.

I've been to Tatsuta twice now, and I hope to come back again the next year and make this an annual trip. It's atmosphere is the perfect place for reconnecting back to nature, loved ones, or yourself. The Dinner changes per season and the chef choses the best local cuisine for you. (I've been in the summer and now winter, and the meals were perfection, and I mean that in every sense of the word.) Staff will welcome you for dinner and explain what you are eating in either Japanese or English (though I found that you get a more in-depth explanation in Japanese). For winter they give you haori (羽織) to wear since dinner and breakfast is outside on the river-side terrace. It's absolutely a wonderful place to stay and I simply can't praise it enough. I recommend this to anyone looking for a Ryokan to stay at. The private onsens and unique charm to Tatsuta make it a must-see spot for anyone's list.

We loved absolutely everything about our stay at Taysuta Ryokan. It was a truly wonderful experience l that will stay in our hearts forever The food was the best I've ever had and totally unexpected . Loved the ritual of it and so many incredible tastes and courses that were delicious and beautifully and thoughtfully presented. The location tranquil and eating by the river just added to the whole experience. The staff were suburb attentive but respecful and extremely helpful Having the variety of Onsens was great, too We wish we could have stayed longer If you are looking for a tranquil, magical and traditional Japanese experience, then this is for you. we can not recommend this place highly enough

Both breakfast and evening meals are very generous if we had stayed longer we wouldn't have both meals each day

The food was incredible, highly recommend getting the dinner as well as the riverside meal is quite the experience. Staff were super friendly and helpful. I felt extremely relaxed from this experience. All of the onsens had a different vibe which was fun to explore.

The experience was extremely relaxing up until the last moments of our stay. The woman who was checking us out seemed overwhelmed and was taking it out on the guests. The energy felt very Frantic and stressful. Other than that, we had An amazing time and would do this again.

Beautiful hotel with amazing service. Tucked on a mountainside by the river, you won’t want to leave your room for a second. Definitely include breakfast or dinner, you won’t regret the amazing food or service by the riverside. For those who have tattoos, you’ll be able to reserve the private onsen and have an authentic experience in one of their 4 private onsens. Just be aware you will not be allowed into the public onsen if you have tattoos. Either way, I’ll definitely be staying again sometime!

We should have stayed longer!
