First time I have stayed in a shared room in a loooong time, but it worked super well. There were 4 beds in the room and it was separated by curtains almost like a luxury capsule so felt semi-private and very comfortable/easy to change/plug in appliances. They provided earplugs but I slept very well and there were no issues at all. The facilities, including the restaurant were very cute and well designed. The matcha latte and baked goods were good for breakfast. The location was excellent and the town is soo cute. Great smaller temples as well as an amazing large temple with amazing modern art installation. Really loved this town and would go again, hotel was very good after a long bike ride. Nice onsen next door.

This is a lovely hotel right on the waterfront. It’s styled beautifully and our room had a zen like calm to it. The bed was a mattress on the floor, so may be an issue for those with mobility problems, and the staircase up to the room was steep, which again could be difficult. The staff were very helpful and friendly and provided lots of helpful information about where to store our bikes, places with great views, a hot bath and restaurants. There is a cafe/restaurant attached that also has a nice vibe. Food in the evening is cooked over a wood fire and was good. I’d stay again.

Stayed here twice now, and it is simply one of the best spots to break up the Shimanami Kaido experience. Setoda is a cool, relaxing little town, and SOIL compliments this perfectly. Only ever had 2 beds of 4 filled, but the "bunk" dorm feels like your own little comfy room. Great view, amazingly comfortable and best staff around! Also the discount to the nearby onsen is worth it! Amazing spot as well.

SOIL also runs a restaurant / cafe, separate cafe and a little souvenir shop (that also has food), so it is easy to forget to go explore what else is around in Setoda! Not a negative, just make sure to check out the rest of the town. The food at the restaurant is great though!

The room was very beautiful, clean, and comfortable. The food was great, and the shared bathroom facilities were always very clean and had what you needed. The location is unbelievable and very convenient since it's right by the ferry!

Other guests' comments that the smell of cooking oil wafts up to the rooms are correct, and the upper floor gets very hot. There were also a few mosquitos we had to kill in our room, so it wasn't the greatest night of sleep. It would be nice if you could crack the window a bit to let some fresh air in (with a screen to keep out bugs).

Great room, although bathroom is shared, still feels private and we were never inconvenienced by this. Cute and great little restaurant/ bar that offers Breakfast to Dinner offerings. Keep in mind for dinner it is not open on Wednesday nights. If I knew it was this good I would have stayed another night. :)

As the hotel is on one of the Shimanami-Kaido Islands, it is a cycling heavy area. It did not appear that there is anywhere to store your bikes. We ended up leaving them outside near a footpath next to a lot of other bicycles. As it rained overnight, if I had not hired a bike for the journey and bought my own, I would have been a lot more disappointed about this issue.

Location was fantastic stopping point while cycling the Shimanami Kaido. Staff were super helpful and friendly, I got given some good recommendations from one of the lovely cafe staff to check out while in town. While not expected, all the staff I met spoke English which was nice to make conversation with the locals since my Japanese is limited. I stayed in the shared dormitory which was comfortable and quiet. Staying here truly made my experience completing the Shimanami Kaido great, thank you!!

The location was perfect, perfect stop for the half way Shimanami- kaido route. It has several grocery shops at about 20' walk. The view was amazing too! The dormitory was really nice with 4 beds, which were incredibly spacious, it was amazing. The bathrooms were nice, not mixed, shared with some of the other rooms, but it was never an issue. Everything was extremely well kept and clean. The place has a nice minimal and nature inspired design to it. The staff was so kind and helpful. They helped me figure out some of my logistics. I was able to leave my bags there before check-in. Also, they have a space to leave your bike. The 'restaurant' has a great feel, great coffee, but I didn't try the food. Also, their roastery across the street is amazing, would highly recommend! Would 100% stay there again!

This was not an issue, however there is no common space to eat/drink and meet people.

Another night another room. We kept extending our stay on Setoda so experienced 3 different rooms. This place is gorgeous. We completely chilled and unwound, enjoying cycling and exploring the island and cycling the lost lanes of Ohmishima. Instead of Onomichi to Imambari we located ourselves on Setoda and did day cycle trips. We had the back roads to ourselves. Always wonderful to return to Soil at night. The staff are incredible. So kind, friendly and with flawless English. Don’t miss having dinner at Tan Tan next door, a culinary experience not to miss. My favourite meal ever experienced in Japan.

Given the island is filled with oranges and mandarins, a breakfast of local citrus fruits and yoghurt would be a great addition for gaijin! A plate of salad leaves and a tuna melt for breakfast is strange.

Room - the family size rooms were booked so we stayed in a dorm with 2 adults and 2 kids. The kids loved it! It was very comfortable and convenient. Location - setoda is a beautiful town and was just the right distance for our kids to ride from onomichi. You can also catch a boat ride back to onomichi if people have sore bums on day 2! Meals - The hotel has a restaurant downstairs which was excellent. We had a delicious breakfast, and wished we’d had dinner there too.

It was ok for us, but elderly or those with very young kids might find the stairs up to the room and bunks in the dorm a little dangerous.

Beautifully designed - roomy & comfortable rooms. Seemed to be a younger set staying there - probably environmentally aware people which seems to be SOILS main thrust, VERY comfortable bed - sprung mattress with foam topper - best sleep in Japan do far - also great pillows. This hotel is a little hidden gem - attached restaurant does a great tuna toastie for brekkie & nice coffee. Everyone so friendly & helpful & willing to make time to chat,

Steep stairs to room - but they will help oldies with their luggage!!
