The Villa Esponda was a surprise. The building is full of old world charm with comforts are modern. The interior was clean, well lit with natural light and felt very warm and welcoming. There were signs of some renovation work occurring. It is an old building and there are things you expect when staying in such accommodation, and if this is your expectation you will be pleasantly surprised. The building's interior was clean and well cared for. The patterned floor had a nice shine and the wooden staircase and bannisters were shiny. The beautiful older door into our room was well kept and painted and fitted with door locks that appear new and secure. The staff was very welcoming, showed us the room and how to operate the heating system.. We arrived late and checked out the next morning so there was not time for more interaction with the staff so the rating is based on the welcome. The room we stayed in had the most comfortable queen bed with textured white sheets that made you feel luxurious throughout the night. It was a cold and rainy day when we arrived soaking wet. The heating system was responsive and got us toasty fast. The bathroom was modern with good water pressure and reliable hot water supply. They have a towel warmer in your bathroom! If you haven't experienced this utility, you won't understand. We just didn't expect it in this hotel category and at the price. The long window in our room was outfitted with long curtains that framed a most beautiful scene of green mountains, grey skies and the characteristic red rooftops and white buildings. Overall, we felt that we had a short stay in a smallish old mansion located in a flat area, within less than a few blocks walk of some of the town's best amenities, and its historical attractions. Basque culture permeates the town and you are close to good food and friendly people. Check out the areas near all the bridge crossings less than 5 minutes walk away.
I wish we could have stayed longer. The room provided a comfortable respite after a long day of exploring. I would have liked a later check-out time than 10 am.

Location is good, central, but also quiet. Bathroom was spacious and the room was cosy. The communication ahead of our arrival was good.
The only issue we had is that we were in a ground floor room where the only ‘window’ that opened was the glass entry door (ok there was a ventilation window in the bathroom too). There was privacy curtain, and the door opened to a courtyard, not street, so privacy was not an issue. However, in the middle of a heatwave it was hard to stay in the room or to sleep with no air, so we had to leave the door cracked open, also at night. We did not find a doorstop to block entry and rigged something to at least alert us. Nothing happened, but a simple triangular door block would be a good addition to this particular room.

A nice house in a very good location. The room was clean and more than adequate for an overnight stop, although a little dated. Saint-Jean-Pied-le-Port is a really pretty little town and is certainly worth a visit.
There is a small number of parking places immediately outside the building although these are not for the exclusive use of the house and all of them were full when we arrived, so we had to drive around to find alternative parking, which proved to be fairly difficult. This was in November, so I can't imagine what parking would be like in summer!

A perfectly located old home for a one or two night stay that is right across the street from an entrance to the old walled town and just a few steps from restaurants and cafes. Our studio had been nicely renovated and had a lovely view over the hills. The beds were comfortable and the little kitchenette was fine for our needs.
There were 48 fairly steep steps from reception to our studio door on the second floor and it may not suit someone with foot, knee.hip or leg issues. Finding a free public parking spot in this very busy town was nearly impossible. The low beam in the freshly renovated bathroom could be a problem during the night ;)

The accommodation is located in the centre of St Jean. The bedroom window faces the mountain as requested and so is very quiet with no street noise. The host was easy to communicate with and very helpful with checkin time. We are planning a trip on the Camino Trail next year and the Pilgrims office staff were extremely helpful and provided a lot of information for trip planning. The host was informative as well advising re weather pattern and number of pilgrims. We will definitely be back to stay at La Villa Esponda SJD

Wonderful view from room. Bed was comfortable. We enjoyed the air/heat as it was quite cold and it warmed the room nicely. Room was large. The host was lovely responded quickly to questions via WhatsApp (after checkin she was not on site)
It would have been nice to have breakfast on site but options very near

The hotel is an old converted house and very informal. The staff was really nice and helpful and showed me how to enter and exit the hotel when no staff was around and how to leave the room for an early departure. The place is a little noisy when people are walking around because of creaky wooden floors very typical of a place of this vintage. Easy to find and good location in this small town. Luggage pick up worked great. The bathroom was a little small and lacked proper ventilation so had a bit of an unpleasant odor.

We arrived late in the evening, and our host was incredibly helpful. They showed us to our spacious room and even recommended nearby food establishments. Our room was large, with comfortable beds and a convenient small kitchenette for enjoying our tea. The location was ideal for beginning our Camino journey. We highly recommend this accommodation as a restful stop before embarking on your Camino adventure. Plus, there's a lovely breakfast bar just across the road to fuel your journey!

Beautiful place to stay for the start of my Camino. Welcoming owner, room was big with many facilities and an incredible mountain view. Bed was very comfy. Shower was warm and the air conditioner was cold and perfect.
It had tea and coffee facilities but no milk, maybe some of those little milks included would’ve been nice. No bottled water available but tap water did fine.

We were delayed by traffic, and Liz remained to greet us, which was lovely. Our simple room had a little kitchenette, which was very useful. The view was stunning! The room was quiet and comfortable. We had a walk around the lovely town before collecting a pizza to take back to our room. We ate gazing across the valley & mountains. We arrived late & wished we could have stayed longer. Liz helped us with information about the village, restaurants, etc ,
