If you’re looking for a retreat where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and experience nature in its purest form, then this eco-lodge is the perfect place. Located right by the sea, it not only offers breathtaking views but also an experience that goes far beyond the typical vacation. The lodge is lovingly run by Jim, an Irish original. Jim is an exceptional host, who immediately draws you in with a combination of warmth and wisdom. He has countless stories to share, often sitting in his rocking chair surrounded by his three dogs – Milli, Rocky, and Benji. These sweet dogs make the stay even more pleasant, offering constant companionship during outdoor activities. Jim loves to share his deep insights into life and the surroundings, whether it’s through a cozy conversation or a walk in nature. You can immediately tell that he is a true connoisseur of the area and lives with a profound love for nature. Those lucky enough may even get to hear exciting anecdotes about the history of the region or little pearls of wisdom from his own life, as if you were sitting with a wise grandfather. The lodge itself is simple but incredibly cozy, offering everything you need for a nature-filled stay. The focus is clearly on a respectful relationship with the environment – so it’s not uncommon for a few ants to cross your path or for you to find yourself surrounded by flora and fauna. But this is exactly what gives the lodge its charm – you truly become a part of nature, not just a spectator. The sunrise spot is particularly noteworthy – it’s a true highlight! The sunrise over the sea is simply magical, and the peace that surrounds you is indescribable. It feels as though you are the only person for miles, creating the perfect, almost meditative retreat.

Jim was so lovely and helpful our entire stay, ensuring we were as comfortable as possible. Helped us do some laundry, ensured we had everything we needed to cook lots of lovely meals during our stay. A few really nice places to eat and grab a coffee near by, reasonably priced however cooking facilities so good we only did this a couple times. What you get for the price is amazing, would recommend for a 2-3 night stay. We absolutely loved being able to use two bikes free of charge, thank you so much Jim

Everything with the property was absolutely perfect, only thing to note is public transport there can be a tad limited and unreliable. When it did work was cheap and super practical however! No problem at all if happy to take a taxi or renting a car/ moped/ buggy!

Beautiful location, if you love nature, calm and the sounds of the jungle and the sea, then this is certainly your place to be! The pool is amazing, really clean and big. The cabins have everything you need, well equipped kitchen, bathroom with hot water and good water pressure. You don’t need airco, the sea breeze does it for ya! From the chairs at the beach you can enjoy the nightfall and spot some batts. Amazing sunrises over the sea. The owner, Jim, is very knowledgeable about nature and the animals around and very accessible. He will help you with any needs, you just gotta ask. He has a direct approach which we really appreciated. We only wished we’d found this place earlier!

Of all the hotels we stayed in during our month exploring Costa Rica this one is the most memorable. While lounging in the pool after dark we were treated to an amazing light show by the distant lightening storm on the horizon out over the sea and the very active fireflies circling the trees above us. This is actually a great place for wildlife lovers because animals are attracted to the fruit trees on the property, many of which were planted by the owner, Jim. Jim (a fellow Irishman) is what makes this place unique. He kept us entertained with stories of his various experiences from his many years living in Costa Rica. He says he’ll write a book about them some day and I for one look forward to reading it!

Nice and quiet place to stay away from the crowd, real Pura Vida for the first time, don't forget your own supply if you are preparing food .You have fridge , little swimming pool, propane stove... 4 nice dogs, exceptional view on the beach( it's waterfront property). You can hear howler monkeys at night probably 20 meters away from your cabin. We had a car so with gps was very easy to get to( no need for 4x4 at all), newly ( same day we came) opened restaurant on the corner , 50 m away with good food, not expensive, corner store 5 min away, Italian pizza...

It's not that I didn't like it. Squeaky stairs/ floor 🤣 so everyone knows that you're going to the washroom at night, it works also other way around you can hear if someone is on the way to you🙂

As soon as we arrived at Howler Monkey Hotel Jim welcomed us and upgraded our room free of charge. We had a bedroom with 4 beds, a separate kitchen and bathroom all to ourselves. The water pressure and temperature in the shower was great. Jim was also very flexible with our checkout time. Throughout our stay Jim was super helpful - giving us recommendations for where to eat, nice activities, etc. He was also very happy to let us use his bikes, kayak, books, and washing machine, all free of charge! The space is rustic but very cute and clean - exactly what we were looking for. There is a nice pool and direct beach access (the beach is rocky, but still very nice vibes with Adirondack chairs to relax in). Contrary to a recent review by guests who stayed in the same room that we did, we did not see ANY bugs or roaches. Of course, in Cabuya you are in the great outdoors, so wear bug spray, but the bugs were not worse than anywhere else on our trip. Actually, the mosquitos were much less bothersome here than even the nearby Mazunte. We met Jim’s dogs, and they were very sweet and friendly! We had no problem with them at all. Jim even helped us retrieve a shirt that we accidentally left behind. The vibe of this hotel is definitely camp-y, but in the best way. Would 100% stay again!

We stayed in a spacious cabin with stunning views of nature and the sea, for a great price. Very clean and large room with private bathroom and kitchen. The accommodation has a large and clean pool, it has a fantastic rest area on the beach with hammocks and chairs to relax. Jim and the staff who work there are really friendly and helped us with everything we needed. There are also 3 very cute and friendly dogs. I can't recommend this place more!!!!!

The place is deeply relaxing., being only 50 M from the ocean. Though the water is quite shallow, only swimmable at high tide. The pool is very nice, with some shade all the time. There is a troop of howler monkeys that passes over in the trees a couple of times a day. . I enjoyed using the kayak to go to a small island nearby. The owner, Jim, was helpful about restaurants and other places to visit. The grounds are shady and pleasant, with friendly dogs to enjoy. It's close to a couple of waterfalls. The beds were also comfortable, with plenty of ventilation in the room. Kitchen facilities are basic, but serve for preparing most meals. It's a great value and I will come back whenever I can.

Shallow water and rocky beach, so you need shoes.

The place is great . Fantastic view of the ocean . The owner Jim is a very good person . He has a great sense of nature and know everything on his property. From the wildlife to the plants. He is a very intelligent man with a lot of knowledge and very good story to tell. He can show you the smallest bees in the world, Tiger heron, tell every name of the birds and much more. I recommand this place and i am returning every year , it is a must see!

It's a deeply peaceful place, with nice gardens around a wonderful pool. The lurched had everything we needed to prepare meals . The owner, Jim was helpful with directions and a blender to make fruit smoothies. It's quiet and the howler monkeys come through the yard twice a day the other travelers were also friendly and fun to converse with I enjoyed kayaking 3 times on a very mellow bay, and even visited the little Cabuya Cemetery.

The beach directly in front of hotel is quite rocky and shallow even at high tide, so one needs to walk or drive down the beach to swim easily.
