The granddaughter of the original owners was just so charming and kind. She is sometimes on reception. She went out of her way to help us set off on our snow walk and let us check out late because no one else was using our room after us. I wish I had asked her name! The breakfast is excellent. Croissants, scrambled eggs and sausages are thoughtfully provided for anyone who can't face fish in the morning. Dinnner was also lovely. We were blown away by all the snow in mid-April. We had hoped it would still be snowy, and were so happy it was. You can borrow snow rackets (shoes), poles and gloves -- they are available right by the front door. We explored up behind the hotel and it was just beautiful. It is such a peaceful place. It was a shock to arrive back in Tokyo that same evening! There is a coin laundry room to use. The outdoor baths are very original - on one side they are built right into a rock, forming a little cave. The second rotemburo was only lukewarm, which came as a surprise. My daughters were fine in it but I found it too cold on a snowy day in mid-April -- however on our second day there was blazing sunshine and it was fine. There is nothing quite like lying in an onsen with snowflakes falling on your head. Unforgettable.

We weren't too keen on the stuffed animals around the lobby.

Was amazed they could stay open in the winter at such elevation, but being in the national park, the road is well maintained and reasonably clear. The views were stunning. The location was great for back-country skiing. We had planned to go to Furano to ski but found a way to back-country because we didn't want to leave. The dinner was fantastic and staff so cheerful and nice. We had a large party so got upgraded to a suite with a bath in the room but didn't use it since we restored ourselves in the Onsen which was a little tired, but a great amenity. Also, while our room was Japanese spare, as expected, the beds and bedding were super comfortable, which I didn't expect.

Can find very little fault. Maybe having more trail guidance from the facility on what is open and what is safe would have been helpful. Also, note, there's no lunch and no store within an hours drive so hit a 7-11 or Lawsons on your way for food for the trail or plan to eat Ramen.

Excellent food, friendly, helpful staff. Amazing views. Beautiful rustic onsen built around giant boulders covered with moss.

It seems like they put new fixtures in the community bathroom since I was there two years ago, but they took out a bidet toilet and replaced it with a squatty-potty. They need more bidet toilets. The two onsens (male and female) are different from one another, vapor cave in the women's. They switch them only for the night time after 8 pm and then back at 8 am, so if you only bathe once per day you won't see both of these amazing onsens. I kinda wish they would swap them on alternating days.

What an amazing location. This was exactly what I wanted. A ryokan up in the mountains, freezing surroundings and warm waters. The location, the food, and the facilities were all amazing. I'll also add that even though the check-in time was 15:00, I was able to check in earlier when the bus arrived, which I've learned in Japan is not a given.

It's probably unfair to deduct points for the facility when it didn't really bother me, but if we are nitpicking, the facilities come across as a bit old and in need of maintenance.

We had an amazing stay in Ryounkaku! The rather remote location is perfect to start your hike bright and early in the morning and discover the wonders of Mount Tokachi! The rooms were classic Japanese style, with tatami and futon beds. It was large and we had a nice view of the mountain. The onsen is great! Water flowing directly from the mountain, super hot! The outdoor bath is great. Finally, dinner was stunning! We didn’t expect something so nice, but it was plenty of fresh fish, prepared in many different ways, simply delicious! The owners were very nice!

Breakfast was a good mix of Japanese and Western foods, and included both coffee and tea. The onsen with rust-colored waters are well worth using, especially the outdoor baths. This is the highest elevation ryokan and onsen in Hokkaido, so it's a unique experience. The dinner also exceeded our expectations.

The men's shared bathroom only has one sitting toilet. My partner had to wait awhile to use the mens toilet in the morning. Women don't have this issue, since there were much more men than women staying at the hotel, at least when we were there.

The staff were very friendly and the whole Ryokan felt very homely. The dinner and breakfast was amazing and felt like Japanese home-cooked meals! The sunset view was breath-taking from this location.

Shared toilets were slightly inconvenient.but very clean and well maintained. One of the onsens was designed more poorly than the other side (they switch men and women sides at diff times every day) and was slightly difficult to navigate with a toddler; needed to caution when going to the outdoor onsen.

Completely recommend this place. Ok, it could use a remodel yes, but for the location and the price you get an amazing delicious dinner, access to an indoor/outdoor Onsen with a beautiful view and kind staff. They even fixed us a hiking breakfast of plum rice balls, bottled tea and a dessert instead of the breakfast buffet. We were able hit the trail early (right from the hotel) and summit Tocachidake. We hope to come back in the winter for skiing.

My husband wanted a sit-down toilet upstairs.

You need a car to get there so it was a great drive in January up the mountain with a lot of snow. The view from the top is amazing. The outer onsen area is not large and the baths are outdated. But you do have clear view of the mountain when outside in the hot bath. We had a nice Japanese dinner and breakfast.

I had the expectation of a larger outer bath, however at this period it was not busy at all.

Mountain views, the dinner was amazing. Lots of little courses so fresh and prepared with care. Staff were friendly. Very traditional Ryokan experience. The walk neat the trail head is Ansei crater was a great 1.5 hour walk with sulfur vents and volcanic rock.

I didnt use the onsen cause I have tattoos (out of respect, I didn't ask) but there was no where to shower unless you were by the onsen. Which is traditional Ryokan but just something to be aware of.
