A comfortable boutique hotel - the ambiance is charming, the rooms are clean, the staff were courteous, and the location is fantastic, perfect for exploring the city.

There was renovation work happening near the gym and pool area during our visit. The noise from the work was clearly audible from our rooms, which impacted the otherwise relaxing vibe of the hotel. Additionally, when we arrived, the elevator was under maintenance. The receptionist assured us it would be fixed within about an hour, but unfortunately, it was still out of service the next morning. The gym itself is quite compact. It has two treadmills, both are on the smaller side—not ideal for taller guests or those looking for a more robust workout.

The property was located in a quiet area while still being close to the main strip of town either 5 minutes by taxi or 15 minutes walking. The hotel itself has a wonderful relaxing pool area and adequate small gym with basic free weight dumbbells and some cardio equipment. The spa is small but they can also treat you in your room; the massage was one of the best I’ve had. The breakfast choices were plentiful and delicious. The rooms are large, clean and the air conditioning is more than adequate. The Attaches restaurant has many wonderful food options with both an Italian and Indonesian Menu and many choices of wine to choose from.

I had no issues to report, it was wonderful.

The hotel and rooms are beautiful and the main draw here is the retro style. The food was excellent in both the Italian and Indonesian restaurants, and there was a wide choice at breakfast. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and changed my room from the front to the back of the hotel so it was more peaceful. The location was perfect for me, with lots to do nearby and not too long a walk to main attractions.

There were maintenance works taking place: whilst the pool was technically open, it was surrounded by scaffolding, floor being pulled up, and noisy works, so it wasn't really viable to use/relax by. Wifi didn't work in my room, which I would expect for the price.

Breakfast! It is open buffet. Wow, a lot of local dishes to choose from plus additionally the standard offer as in European hotel. The staff was very nice and willing to explain the local dishes and help you with them so that you have them served correctly. They change the local offering each day as we were told. The bed was comfortable (but a bit short if you are tall, length of 190cm), the room was big the bathroom was ok - do not need anything more for one night stay, have not checked the spa or the restaurant lunch or dinner offer.

Window overlooking a path (although curtains and draperies allow for privacy) .

Beautifully appointed, felt very luxurious, quiet and away from traffic. The room was large, clean and very comfortable. Housekeeping did an excellent job. The staff were polite. The speakeasy bar was wonderful (although we found it through google, the staff at check-in didn't elaborate on the Italian restaurant or speak easy which are accessible within the hotel). We used the pool, which was nice. It was a refreshing change from less fancy places we've stayed, but it depends on your levels of expectation as its a 5* but an indonesian 5* Cheap laundry service close by

The gym wasn't really a gym, most equipment didn't work.

An interesting hotel that successfully plays on its 1930s history. Originally a club for Dutch expats, then an office after independence and later a hotel under various names. A delightful mix of modern luxury and heritage design. The room chosen (an Executive King or Executive Balcony depending on who you book with) was chosen because it had a bath rather than just a shower, personal preference. The A/C was fierce and all the plumbing worked as it should. Breakfast was extensive and had some interesting touches. There was a personally served Gado – Gado or Nasi Tumpang section also freshly made waffles and pancakes. Don’t forget to check out the coffee shop wrong the back.

The only issue encountered was that initially the A/C kept turning itself off, this was quickly rectified. The rooms at the front can be a bit noisy.

I wanted to express my heartfelt thanks for the exceptional hospitality during my recent stay at your hotel: The breakfast, especially the soto and soup, was absolutely delicious. The staff kindly packed homemade jamu for us to take to our next destination, Mt Bromo. When I had a minor accident and hurt my knee, the staff promptly provided a tub of ice and plastic to help with the swelling. Overall, the hotel felt like a home away from home, thanks to the graciousness and friendliness of the staff. Thank you once again for making our stay memorable and comfortable. I look forward to visiting again in the future.

The hotel is beautiful, old school glamour, and tastefully decorated. The rooms were spacious and had everything you need. The beds were big and comfy, and the rooms were clean. The best bit was the staff. 3 of us were unfortunately ill and needed to go to hospital (not because of anything we had eaten there), the staff took us to the hospital, took care to send breakfast to the hospital everyday, sorted everything with the rooms, and looked after the 4th member of our group. I cant thank them enough for their kindness.

The heritage feel of the hotel and the area it is in (very friendly, quiet and walkable). The lovely and helpful staff. The beautiful interior design of the whole hotel and the very comfy rooms. You can feel that a lot of love and passion has been put into this hotel, with great eye for detail. Great food options (both Indonesian and also very tasteful Italian with amazingly good wine options). There are also some really nice coffee places around the hotel with great coffee and delicious pastry. Beautiful pool & gym (small but beautiful). Lush garden (also small but beautiful). The location is superb, right amidst the old Dutch colonial neighborhood as well as not too far from other places worth visiting. We absolutely fell in love with The Shalimar and will definitely be back soon ❤️🤍

The Spa could be a bit bigger and more elaborated. Nonetheless, I had a very nice massage.

- The location is the best in Malang. Nothing can match it! - Amazing architecture of course! - The food is amazing and the staff at the restaurant were so friendly and helpful - The library is open for 24-hour. It's beautiful and comfy. I spent times catching up with my emails and had some business calls there

- Too many promotional flyers, tent cards, and ex-banners. All of which made the hotel looks cluttered - The chandelier in the main restuarant is no longer there (it's gone!)
